Hello, my name is Jaruwan, but my friends call me Jaru. I am a professional chef who has lived in Chiang Rai my entire life. At Akha Kitchen, we specialize in a half-day Thai cooking class that highlights both Thai and Akha cuisine. Our entire team comes from the Akha Hill-Tribe in Northern Thailand, and our heritage enriches our approach to cooking. We’re excited to share our unique culinary techniques with you so that you can prepare authentic Thai and Akha dishes in your own kitchen.
We cater to different dietary preferences, providing vegetarian and vegan alternatives without compromising on flavor. Our staff is fluent in English, Thai, and Akha, ensuring clear communication and an enjoyable experience for everyone. The class typically includes a tour of the local market, where you’ll explore vibrant produce and regional ingredients, followed by a hands-on cooking experience preparing five delectable courses.
You can also enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the class. We’ve designed our program to create a joyful atmosphere filled with laughter and cultural exchange. Expect this engaging session to last around 4-5 hours, providing you with both culinary skills and cherished memories. Join us at Akha Kitchen — it’s the Akha thing to do!

Virtual Cooking Class w/ Chef Jaru…Amaxing! Booked for this class months in advance and couldn’t wait so jumped on the opportunity to join a friends earlier class. Chef Jaru is knowledgeable and makes the class a joy! Gave practical suggestions for substitutions for harder to find ingredients. The Panang Curry was delicious and loved the Sapi Tong. Can’t wait to join again for my next class
Friends and I signed up to do. Zoom cooking class and we made Pad Thai & Sapi Tong dip. What a wonderful time to spend an evening. Chef Jaru is so personable and knowledgeable. Learning the culture and surroundings in her village helped put up there! I loved the visual aids she shared while cooking. She is patient b/c I had to redo my noodles due to overcooking and she waited and chatted. I hope to shop and cook with her someday in person! Booking again to make Pineapple chicken!
Amzing host and just a great experience in general!!Cooked pad thai, tom kha gai and more than you can eat in one sitting xDThank you for the awesome evening!
This is the best money you will spend in Chiangmai! Jasmin was a great host and she kept us entertained all evening.Come hungry because you will leave stuffed!

We had the best time at ackha kitchen! The facilities were beautiful, organised and clean. Jaru was such a good teacher and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. I loved learning about local food and daily life but I especially enjoyed cooking and eating all the incredible food it was a day we will never forget ❤️
Great experience with Jaru.We could choose between different kind of dishes to cook. After this she guided us through a local market and explained a lot about the products and possibilities to cook with. She made us taste different local small bites at the market. During cooking class everything was explained as it should be and even more. She gave a lot of tips and explained very well (her english is really good).5 different dishes that you taste each time after you prepared it. I would highly recommend this cooking class!!
Professional, fun and yummy! Jaru was an absolute joy. We were lucky enough to have her to ourselves so asked way too many questions and leaned a great deal about Chiang Rai and it’s beautiful people. Great value for money. Delicious food, plenty of it and nice setting. Would highly recommend. We wish Jaru all the best with her growing business
Super friendly, open & knowledgeable host sharing her tips for shopping at the local market, preparing a dish from her very own hill tribe culture, the Akha people, and learning to prepare our favorite Thai dishes in a beautiful kitchen setting- an incredible & insightful memory! We couldn’t have made a better choice for spending a day in Chiang Rai— well worth it! We’ll be back for more, and meanwhile sure to sign up for her online classes! Her English was very fluent and very easy to understand, too— absolutely perfect! Great for mixed groups as we cooked both vegetarian and meat dishes. Learned so much, and will take it home!
