Sattahip Naval Base is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
I arrived to see my friends remains receive a pre arranged sea burial. Before the event I asked if any ID was needed – passport . No was the answer. When we arrived we were held at the gate by an over officious naval person because 3 over 65 farangs were not allowed in however the Thais with the group were. Driving licences were produced and after various calls to the base commanders office apparently the wife of the base commander showed up looking somewhat berated. We were then allowed in!! Thank you Mrs Base commanders wife. We had a magnificent lunch at the base restaurant overlooking the bay and then after a short shore ceremony had the fortune to go out into the bay on a lighter. My friends ashes were spread into the water after a most beautiful and memorable ceremony.
First you will have to stop at the Gate and get a pass, there are 2 Golf Courses, Fleet and the beautiful new course ACDC, with an Island Green! Beautiful beaches, the monster Navy Store which has more than Tesco LotusAnd also less expensive! Good cheap places to eat! Has what ever you need and more, and at the right price!.
I wanted to tour the Thai flagship aircraft carrier but was pulled out of line by a guard “Thai people only, sorry”. Fair enough. You may not like it, but you have to accept some national pride. The carrier is not exactly the latest build. I can’t help comparing the experience with San Francisco”s annual Fleet Week where I toured the super duper high tech Zumwalt. But the beach at Suttahip is lovely.
