Ban Buthom Basketry Village is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Perhaps it was the season, but there was very little activity apparent in this village. A huge shop with a small selection of (rather expensive) baskets, and a few people in the nearby village. There was plenty of evidence of the materials for weaving, so perhaps the time of day or time of year was not ideal for visiting. In the end, we had a nice walk in the countryside, bought a basket, and headed back to Surin. It was nice, because we were in the area, but I wouln’t recommend a journey to the area JUST for the basket weaving!
Ban Buthom is a village 14 to 15 kilometers east of Surin on the highway to Sisaket. In this day of automated assembly and instant plastic moulding of so many household appliances and utensils, it is reassuring to know that somewhere people still craft things with their hands, using age-old skills handed down from generation to generation.Having said that, it is actually difficult at Ban Buthom to actually see any basket weavers at work. Perhaps that is because it is a part time occupation when they are not busy with their rice fields. There is ample evidence of their handicraft in the numerous shops that line the highway, displaying a wide range of basketry, from chairs, to baskets, trays and other household appliances.Unfortunately I think the prices being asked are playing on the village’s reputation as a tourist destination, and I think you can pick up most of these items at more competitive prices in almost any marketplace in Thailand.
This is the fifth time I have stopped at Ban Buthom, which promotes itself as a basket weaving village. That will be the last time I waste my time.I have never seen any basket weaving activity and the only things to see are two shops on the highway that sell over the top priced baskets. You are better off going to the market in Surin or watch out for other shops along the road that sell baskets. They are far cheaper.
Ban Buthom Basketry Village is about 25 km from Surin on the highway to Sisaket. Unless you are travelling to Sisaket or somewhere else in this general direction, Ban Buthom Basketry Village is not worth the time or trouble of a visit. The so-called “Village” comprises two roadside shops selling overpriced basketry – you can find cheaper at almost any local market in Thailand. You would think that an enterprize trying to attract tourists would at least make a token effort to demonstrate how the baskets are woven, but there is nothing to show you how they are made.Give it a miss!
