10 thoughts on “Wat Pong Sunan

  1. There is a coffee shop near by and nothing much about Buddha statue and Temple. I just accidentally visit Wat Pong Sunan.

  2. Thailand is a land of temples. There are dozens in even a small Thai city, so you should be selective or you will quickly get ‘chronic wat fatigue’. While this wat is nicely maintained, most of it only dates from 1929, with the possible exception of the chedi behind. At that point this wat was a complete ruin and most of it was reconstructed from scratch. Overall, I would recommend that you save your temple-viewing for older and more artistically important wats. On the other hand, it won’t hurt to have a quick peep.

  3. Wow, where to start. We are just halfway through a 4 week tour of Thailand and this is head and shoulders the best temple we have seen. Immediately on entering the temple compound we were confronted with an absolutely huge golden reclining buddha, absolutely magnificent. Opposite this are two main buildings. The first is a traditional looking temple with gloriously intricate external decoration and a stunning interior with large golden Buddha. The second is the most fantastically ornamental white building with a sculpted exterior of spires, statues and mouldings – like something from another world. Behind these is a compound housing a giant tortoise carrying a standing Buddha and, to cap it all off, the entire compound was bedecked in Chinese lanterns hanging from wires. The visual effect of the hole place is just startling. I’ve said it before in other reviews from Phrae but if this was in Bangkok the tourists would be here by the bus load. As it was we saw only 7 other people.

  4. Small and very bright temple complex with a huge turtle as the main attraction. It was really hot so we spent most time cooling off inside the wonderful painted main hall.BTW there are two enticing coffee shops next to the car park.

  5. A lot of temples in northern Thailand have similar designs and features – not this one! It has a reclining Buddha, interesting design and a giant turtle. Definitely worthwhile stopping by if you’re visiting Phrae.

  6. We were the only guests around the table and were not quite sure of what to do or not do. But two elderly women who sat there helped us. No english – but very kind of them. Lit a candle and wrote our name on the big cloth (the only roman handwriting on it). The golden turtle statue is HUGE! Nice experence.

  7. This temple might be the most famous in downtown of Phrae city. You can see the ordinary Buddha, reclining Buddha, also good luck tortoise. White temple is also included.

  8. This temple is located next to Vongburi House. The last ruler of Phrae moved to Vongburi House after relinquishing power and later (1929) started funding refurbishment and rebuilding of the old derelict temple next door. The Vongburi family thus had an influence on the structures build and their architecture. This makes this temple unique and quite beautiful.

  9. Wat Pomg Sunan has two very striking features: a white confection of a check topped with a plethora of lacy gold spires, and behind it, a HUMONGOUS gold tortoise carrying a small image of the Buddha. Not to be missed.

  10. The temple is located on Kham Lue road where the walking street “Kad Kong Kao” is held in every Saturday night. First, we didn’t intend to visit the temple. However, the temple kindly allowed tourists in the night market to use their toilets for free (many thanks for your kindness), so we visited the temple (and, of course, made a donation). This ancient temple was renovated in 1929 under the support from the owners of Vongburi house. The temple is really gorgeous even in the night. Highlights of the temple include 108 spire white pagoda, giant golden tortoise statue, huge reclining Buddha, arch entrance with 19 spire golden pagoda, etc.The question was why did we forget to include such a beautiful temple in our itinerary in the first place.
