  1. Excellent opportunity to learn about the hill tribes, many displays, artifacts, videos. Surprisingly, the hill tribes are not permitted citizenship in Thailand. They deserve attention.

  2. Interesting museum which breaks down the history of Hilltribes in Thailand and their differences in culture, beliefs and life including dress, houses, relationships etc. Only there for an hour max but lovely to see that local authorities recognise their heritage and working with them to preserve the history whilst increasing quality of life such as access to healthcare and education.

  3. Good displays, with plenty of bilingual explanations on the hill tribes and on opium, accompanied by good background information on history

  4. Nice place with different tribe’s stuff and informative video and texts. It’s worth visiting if you are in Chiang-Rai.

  5. The exhibits are rather ho-hum and not really curated well. Apparently from the updates, the exhibits and the video shown has not been updated in decades. The best thing about the museum is the clean toilets and the toy pig on the counter for calling the person on duty.

  6. A very outdated museum. Lots of the information was dated 2001 or over 10 years old! Not sure if the video or the information is still relevant!? It’s interesting to learn about opium and the opium poppy but I’m not sure any of the information about the tribes is correct for 2023. I would not recommend it unless you need to avoid the heat of the day or rain.

  7. The Hill Tribes Museum is located on the 3rd floor of the PDA building – Population and Community Development. After paying 100 Thb for 2, we first watched an excellent 20 minute slide presentation that detailed the geographic area, population size, agriculture practices and costumes of each hill tribe. There are almost 1 million people and six main tribes currently located in the north of Thailand.

  8. This is a nicely kept and nicely curated museum about the hill tribes that live mainly in Northern Thailand. Sections of the museum are dedicated to the different hill tribes and a large section near the entrance with information about poppy cultivation and the production of opium in and around the Golden Triangle. The sections about the main hill tribes have artefacts from the tribe, models of their domestic situation and information about both their lives and customs. All the information was pretty easy to digest. There’s also a 20 minute video documentary about the people, but looks like it was created about 20 years ago. The most important thing is that I came away having learned something and that’s the point of a museum.

  9. We stumbled upon the museum by chance and found it small but interesting. We also booked two tours with PDA tours housed in the museum,. We went for a one day trekking trip and a private all day trip to the golden triangle. Both fantastic tours organized by this community-based organization. Highly recommended.

  10. There is a good video presentation of the issue of the Opium trade as well as many artifacts of the hill tribes in Northern region of Thailand. The museum attempts to explain the different background of the major hill tribes.

  11. This museum gives a good overview of the different hill tribes in the Chiang Rai area and how they live. I enjoyed the video and learning more about the history of the opium trade and issues. Very friendly helpful staff too.I booked a day tour through PDA Tours at the museum and had a brilliant day visiting the hill tribes, Doi Tung and the Golden Triangle. They also organise trekking and overnight trips. Highly recommend to see the area and support the local community.

  12. A very interesting small museum giving a good overview of all the hilltribes. The 20 minute video was well worth watching.
