10 thoughts on “Wat Rajamontean

  1. Wat Rajamontean is one of ChiangMais beautiful temples: just by looking at it from the outside it is amazing. Photo worthy and it is near every temple inside and outside the square.

  2. A beautiful temple like all the Wat’s I visited. Beautiful inside and out. Plenty of smaller Wat’s around the main temple to see. A smaller Wat but nice to see. Large seated Buddha. Bit out the way but worthwhile seeing

  3. One of the more colourful temple with Giant buddha. There is lots of sculptures in and around the temple. Looks like it was renown renovated or painted or well cares for. no pics

  4. Recognizable by the large buddha our front, Wat Ratchamonthian is located in the north side of the city. Both the exterior and interior of the temple and assembly hall are beautiful. The surrounding grounds are well kept. The temple is one of the smaller temples in the city so we didn’t find it too busy

  5. Meaning Dragon Temple, it is more easily recognised by the giant Buddha out front and on a seeming platform balcony. The building itself is gorgeous and worth a walk around just to admire the intricate design

  6. Wat Ratchamonthian, a north-facing temple, unusual for Thailand, was constructed in the 15th century under the reign of King Tilokarat, Lanna’s most famous monarch. The ornate two-story temple, recently restored, is distinctive for its reddish-brown walls and the huge seated Buddha, in the Earth Witness posture, facing north, on the porch next to the upper floor entrance. All the large, seated Buddha images inside this temple, both upper floor and lower, are crowned, wearing rich robes and lots of ornaments, a style called the Chakravartin—Universal Ruler. This represents the Buddha reigning over the whole world at a time when the Buddhist Dharma has triumphed everywhere. When you enter the compound, notice the row of nine large stone balls beside the viharn. Called luknimit in Thai, these stones are ordinarily buried in the ground to mark the boundary of the temple when it is first built or undergoes restoration. If they are out in public it indicates a reconstruction or renovation is being planned though that may be a long way off yet. Meanwhile devotees come to make merit by adorning the stones with wafers of gold leaf.

  7. Wat Ratcha Monthian, , north side of the moat in front Wat Lok Molee it has a very large, white Buddha statue in the sitting position overlooking the main road. The viharn is also highly decorated and has steps up to it directly from the roadThe roof has three tiers To the left a large white Buddha in the Subduing Mara posture. Near, it’s is the upper viharn (the viharn building has two floors ) with columns in dark red and decorated with gold capitals , and the floor is made of pale marble. The effect is stately but no offerings, flowers etc. on the main alter the principal Buddha statue and a few smaller each side. The main Buddha is very different The style is more Burmese-. It is white, and wears a crown and so quite unlike the usual gold Buddha statues see in most of the temples of Chiang Mai. The posture, however, is, that of Subduing Mara. Worth seeing

  8. You will find Wat Rajamontean, the dragon temple, lose to Wat Lok Mo and Wat Kuan Kama. Once you pass the big, colorful dragon at the entrance, a huge sitting Buddha is waiting for you. This was built in 2010 and unfortunately has not much history. However, Wat Rajamontean is a very colorful temple.

  9. Located across from Wat Molee on Shri Poom Road, is an elegant Temple complex, beautifully decorated and as usual, has unique qualities. This Temple was built in the 15th century, during the reign of one of the Lanna Kingdom;s most famous monarch, King Tilokanat. The most distinctive attraction is the north facing Beautiful Gigantic Buddha statue in the posture of the earth Witness. The Viham is a 2 story temple with many crowned Buddha statues, wearing ornate robes and intricate ornaments of power and stature, in the style of Chakravaratin, the Universal Ruler. Spacious and beautiful, it is a very sacred space, active with monks. There is a rare display of 9 large “luknimit” stone balls, which are usually buried in the ground to mark the boundaries of the temples. One of the must visit temples, although every one of temples I have visited are worthy of exploration.

  10. Small (compared to other temples), unique and beautiful. So different that the other temples we saw, Wat Rajamontean is free and will only take a few short minutes to explore. There is a single temple you can enter if you take off your shoes and a large fond Buddha to take pictures with. Although a newer temple, it’s worth a visit.
