Ping River is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking , Thailand
Why ?Because it is what we did and we had the chance to see several interesting events.Like a Wedding, or a gathering of boy scouts or Loi Kratong floating candles launching…And we didn’t see any tourists at all.So it was, if dare I say, authentic ?You know, we tourists (!) are always looking for the authenticity of what we see, dreading the crowds or the hustle of sellers forcing into our hands unneeded souvenirs.Well, all this didn’t happen near the river, which in itself was remarkable as we were in Chiang Mai for 5 days, last November, for Yi Peng and Loy Krathong (Lantern Festival), which are the top touristic events of the year. However, if you are in Chiang Mai for 1 or 2 days only, then there many more amazing things to see and experience (like visiting the Temples for instance). So if you have enough time, this river is a nice enough place to see, with may be a short cruise on it.As always (or almost) I have attached plenty of pictures…to give you a glimpse of what we enjoyed to see there.
Went on Mae Ping River cruise dinner. 2.5 hours. An old boat typically Thailand but good value for money paid. Loverly on board service. Had a beautiful South Frican wine. Food was lovely and more than plentiful. Went down river in daylight and came back at dark.
Had a great trip up the river with a stop off at the farmers lodge for fruit and drink, great way to spend the day and lots to see, well worth it
Dirty water river, no wild life, nothing typical that worths mentioning… even the stop at the farmer lodge is quite boring, got offered unripe pineapple and watermelon… paid 550 bath…stay away from this.
Even though the water was very low the 50 Min. Bamboo raft ride down the river was very nice and tranquil. Our two raftmen did a great job keeping us from bottoming out in the low river.Beautiful scenery and quiet made this very wonderful.
We (four of us) booked this tour at the last minute with the help of our hotel staff. Picked up at our hotel and dropped off in time to explore War Chai Mongkhon and have a good cappuccino on the boathouse pier. We were fortunate to have the boat and a wonderful captain, Tien to ourselves. Khun Tien gave a wonderful tour pointing out different landmarks and the historical significance of each. He gave us a great tour of the riverside farmhouse and introduced us to the many fresh grown herbs used in regional cooking. As we enjoyed fresh herbed drinks and ice cream, it began to rain. And it rained HARD! There was no where better to be during a downpour! Although part of the farmhouse has suffered from the COVID pandemic’s devastating effects on tourism, the spirit there is very much alive! We are grateful to KhunTien for sharing his wealth of knowledge and passion for the history and cultures which continue to shape the Chiang Mai area, northern Thailand and beyond. This boat ride down the Mae Ping was a truly wonderful experience and I highly recommend it!
Fantastic trip, with my daughter, amazingly we had boat to ourselves! Great views, farmhouse trip was very informative and guide was really knowledgeable. Welcome ice cream and drink very nice! Would highly recommend!
We had half a few hours to spare, hence, decided to take a boat ride along the Mae Ping river seeing as it was just a two minute walk from our hotel, The Ping Nakara, and it didn’t disappoint. The boat ride was delightful, learning about the local area was very interesting and we had a lovely time.
Have been on a couple of river trips which we have enjoyed. The river is fast flowing but calm. However, whenever you see the Mae Ping River it always looks dirty.
The peaceful Ping River suddenly overflowed it banks on September 8 due to the super typhoon that hit Chiang Mai. The entire lower level of Chiang Mai Was flooded to a level of 1 1/2 meters
