  1. We were in Ubon ten days before this festival last year, we rented bikes and visited many of the temples and witnessed the construction of these elaborate candle parade floats. 5. This festival is truly amazing. It would have to be on a par with the Harbin China Ice Festival.Apparently it all started about 100 years and has grown where each local temple creates a wax sculpture on a float to honour Buddhist Lent with Hindu and Buddhist legend themes. Buddhist mural art brought to life. I counted about 30 different floats primarily in yellowish to gold colouring but some with splashes of other colors and the intricate detail is amazing. Apparently the craftsmen devote almost a year of effort to this.Because its at Buddhist Lent from the lunar calendar the date varies each year so you need to google the date for each year The city is buzzing and accommodation is booked out long before. Really worth the effort to get here. Outstanding festival.

  6. Each year in July, there will be the Buddhist Lent day which all monks should stay at the temples and cannot sleep somewhere else. In ancient age, this day has established because of the monsoon season so people cannot ask the monks to stay out of the temples. During these 3 months, Buddhist will make merit and give the candles and necessary stuffs for monsoon season for the monks. The big candle is the most necessary thing in that age which they did not have electricity.Nowadays no one use a candle during the night but the tradition is still going on.

  8. I must see if you are there for the festival. Giant floats are used in a parade. Temples try to outdo each other for the best float made from wax. The monument in the main park square is magnificent.
