Water Runner And Bobby’s Elephant Home is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
We had great time with Bobby and his elephants. He taught us a few words and commands, even the elephant song.We gave them food (alot of food) to eat, they kissed us when we said “Chop Chop”, we had a great time with them! We went to the river and bath with them.I will not forget this! Worth every minute. No riding the elephants / the Mahoots doesn’t even have a whip – for those who are concerned by animal abuse (like us)
They say an elephant never forgets. Well this day will live long in my memory. I am certain that as the name suggests this is a happy camp for these marvellous retired animals. Washing feeding and riding Thoma my host for the day in the river wild was the highlight of the day and the Water runner is equally recommended although the rapids would be best experienced in the wetter season for the more intrepid thrill seeker. You reach a secluded tribe village by quad bike as Abba your friendly guide for the day is keen to impart his knowledge of the local area before a generous tasty lunch is offered care of some friendly locals.A fantastic day out.
We booked a half-day tour through our hotel based on a brochure that was there. After a car ride that lasted an hour and 45 minutes (going way out of our way to pick up other customers), we were not given the tour we paid for. Elephant rides were advertised on the brochure but we were told they don’t do rides there. When we asked for a partial refund (she said the tour was 1200 baht but we had paid 1600), she offered to let us ride the elephants secretly. We didn’t want to do that but still weren’t given any money back. She was also quite agressive and unapologetic. We found some of the staff to be unprofessional: pinching customers on the calf from behind, smoking during the tour, pushing children into picutres, throwing river water onto us, and pretending to have lost our phones. The majority of the experience was just standing around. There were at least 20 people to 3 elephants. We were not told when the tour was over, the “trainers” just walked away. Our experience at Bobby’s/ Kanjana Elephant Sanctuary left us disappointed and we would recommend finding somewhere else.
I can only speak to the ATV tour as this is the one I attempted to do. My friends and I were not allocated the number of ATVs we had booked and paid for and as a result they insisted that we double up on a one seater ATV which had on stickers clearly stating not to carry any passengers. While they are a few newer ATVs they were also quite a number of older ATVs which did not start and kept cutting out while persons were on the tour. After voicing our displeasure with the way which things were being done the owner simply walked away and stop speaking to us basically leaving you with no choice but to do the tour or leave as she already had the money.
We booked the ATV tour for a party of 14 and arrived to find 6 viable ATVs. Initially we were told we’d have to pay extra to share but we refused. Then after the training we were told to share and we refused. They said it was because some people “failed the training and it was a safety issue” which then changed to “there will be additional ATVs available when we reach the park”. Those who toughed it out when we realized a refund was not an option said there were no additional ATVs anywhere else, they just wanted us to start the tour. At one point they rolled out other ATVs that had to be hard wired to start.I still find it funny (not really) how “failed training” was a safety issue but the ATVs themselves have caution stickers about passengers because it affects the balance yet they encourage it. Money grabbers and rude! The owner pretends not to speak English when issues arise.
My friend and I visited Chiang Mai for a few days, and being of a somewhat larger frame we knew several of the adrenaline activities would be off limits. After a recommendation from the hotel a day of ATV, waterfall jumping and White water rafting fitted the bill quite nicely. The cost for the full day out (including a buffet lunch) was around 2000baht. We got picked up at our hotel at 8am, and drove up into the mountains north of Chiang Mai, which takes around 60mins or so. The ATVs were prepped ready to go, and after a very simple safety demonstration/training session (and by this we mean follow hand signals, and can you drive in a circle around a tree) we were good to go. Drove for about 20-30 mins before stopping off at a beautiful spot near the river to take in the views. After that it was a bit more off road. Your not going at breakneck speeds, but then again, I don’t want a broken leg on hols, so it was cool for me. After the ATVs we went to a waterfall in the forest where you could treat it like a personal water slide. The climb up is a little precarious, so take your time and make sure footing is secure, because if you were to hurt yourself, you are in the middle of nowhere, and I’m certain doesn’t have air ambulance! After the waterfall was the rafting. You hand all of your worldly goods to your guide (initially worried about that), but a little bit of trust and off we go down the river. The views whilst rafting are amazing, with overhanging bamboo, Elephants, and tropical birds swooping. After dodging the rocks and get back to base camp for your a late lunch. You have worked up an appetite by then. You also have option to buy a pic of you rafting, and for me it was 150baht well spent to capture the moment. The final word I will say is our main guide was a really intelligent and informative gentleman, and throughout the day we discussed the ecology, the history, the architecture and loads of other things. My mate and I had am unforgettable day.
I was not there but on the brochure I can see they are riding elephants! NO! NO! and once again big NO! This is not ecoturism, they are ecovillains
We had a wonderful half day here. The elephants have been rescued from loggers by Bobby and walked from Burma to Thailand. They have 4 adult females and 1 2 yo baby girl. Bobby teaches you about the elephants, how to talk to them in Thai, and you get to feed them, get kissed and hugged by the baby, and then take them all for a walk to the river for a bath. Someone tried to climb on the back of one of them in the water, and the elephant playfully tipped them into the river! There was no riding. Lunch is good too. Well worth it. Not busy either.
We had a car and driver for the day and wanted to go rafting (without an elephant tour). When we called waterrunner tours a few days before they said they had a short route of 5 km for 1200b (one hour net for rafting) and a long route of 10 km for 1600b (2 hour net for rafting) When we arrived the lady said that due to the rain of the day before, the river was a bit high and that they were oferring a 4 km rafting trip for 1200b and it would take about 10 min ride to get there plus another 40 min rafting. We paid and the driver took us with a guide. After 5-6 min he stopped to let us out. Nice guide but the net rafting time was only 30 minutes. Only 3-4 mediocre rapids. Seems we were ripped off. Not worth the money.
We took a half day private tour and can not recommend it enough. Shelly our guide was super and very knowledgeable about not only the elephants but the area and culture of Thailand. We went to a remote and beautiful setting and spent some time with the elephants fed and bathed them. Was an amazing day. A must do!!!! I think the private is the way to go we had the elephants and the whole area to ourselves. Was spectacular!
