Tuk-Tuk Drivers is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
I’ve been coming to Thailand for years and each time I visit the Tuk -Tuk drivers become more unfriendly and greedy. The “Land of Smiles” doesn’t apply to these drivers.They want to charge the maximum price for a trip so they can do the minimum number of trips in a day. Unfortunately this is annoying the tourists.I’d recommend planning to stay in a location where you need a Tuk – Tuk or taxi as little as possible or maybe plan to travel with another couple and split the cost. Really, they are so unfriendly and overcharge so much they don’t deserve business.
We took several Tuk Tuk’s during our vacation, just make sure you negotiate your price first. You can negotiate with the driver or take the next one in line. If you’re traveling during the day at busy hours, I’d suggest taking a mask with you…the gaz smells can be intoxicating! That goes for anywhere in Thailand.
My Wife and I went over to Patong from Karon beach the other day.We thought as we have never used one we would try a Tuk-Tuk .We found our driver not willing to talk at all maybe because he could speak English ???It was $400 BAHT ( $18-19 AUS ) to Patong shopping mall but coming back in a 4 door car taxi it was only $300 BAHT ( $ 13-14 AUS)Don’t get me wrong some of them are really cool looking others are just boring to see and hear.
Every single tuktuk driver I met so far was a criminal who would demand more as the agreed upon price at arrival.Pay the correct amount because you will not get back any change! This happened to me in 2016 and in 2019
Please avoid tuk Tuks expecially if you are a woman. I was scammed by one this week. I’m including his card below, but I encourage you to avoid them all. Use grab instead.
we had some very friendly ones. but once in a while they tried a rip off by double the “regular” price. usualy we got the regular fix price neverthleless but then therefore an older tuk tuk.
It is really cheap to travel by tuk tuk as I realized that the grab is very expensive.Tuk tuk is very safe provided you strike a correct deal and explain them where you want to go. once I had an experience that the driver took me to wrong location as he was poor in english and mis interpretted my destination. therefore lesson learnt was to confirm if he understood and also keep google map handy while travelling in tuk tuk.
In my experience tuk tuks are dangerous, noisy, smelly, and I was scammed nearly every time. Patong is an awful place, and tuk tuks contribute to that.
The best way to avoid getting ripped off by the taxi mafia is to stay away from them and not use them at all unless really necessary.A much better way to get a taxi is to use the bolt app. It is the fares you could expect and not the inflated fares used by the mafia, and the fares are visible in the app before you make a booking.
a Tuk Tuk driver took us for a tour of the temples within the walled city, his wife jumped in half way through the tour and offered us a tour of the National Park the next day which we accepted , only noticed she wasn’t a registered guide when she picked us up the next morning. she was totally useless and couldn’t answer a single question. Don’t accept tours from these Tuk Tuk drivers partners etc go with a registered operator
