I had never tried meditation before and was going for the experience. I was very pleasantly surprised just how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mali is an excellent host who went out of her way to make sure we were all well cared for and the teaching monk was very knowledgeable, friendly, caring and patient as well as a good teacher. The food was excellent, simple and plentiful. Accommodation also was simple but clean and comfortable. There are a number of meditation sites all around the property, which were all very peaceful, although many are an uphill hike away.
This was the most memorable thing I did in Thailand! The scenery is lush. Mali and her team are remarkably kind and accomodating. The teaching monk is funny and patient. I originally went for 3 days but came back to spend the new years there which was the most unique one I’ve had yet. We released lanterns and made wishes for 2019. It was so sweet. I left feeling calm and inspired. Thank you Pa Pae.
If you’re looking for a fantastic meditation retreat outside of Chiang Mai in the beautiful countryside, you’ve found it! The teaching Monk is such a beautiful person and Mali who runs it is as well! Very fulfilling and satisfying. Just go and try- you won’t be disappointed!
It feels wrong to write a tripadvisor review for something so meaningful, but if it gives others the confidence to go then it’s worth it. What the team have created in Pa Pae is just wonderful. The creativity of the execution of their physical setup, how they put together the itinerary, to their beautiful trio of dogs – what a place. I had wanted to do something like this for a long time, and I’m so glad I chose this one. The teaching monks are so kind and warm, so happy to share stories. The retreat was more educational than I’d expected, which was awesome for me. They teach the ‘middle way’ which felt much more relaxed that I’d have expected (ie. it’s comfort first so sit on a chair if it’s comfier for you). Thank you Mali, the chef, both of the wonderful teaching monks and the pups for the tail wags and happy faces whenever you approach them. Ps. Travel tip. Pa Pae is about half way between Chiang Mai and Pai. It also happens to be directly on the bus route (I always booked through 12go Asia for the bus company Prem Pracha). Getting there is easy – ask Mali for the place to stop written in Thai over email and show it at the ticket counter. Because I left at an unusual time.. Getting out again was more complicated but seems to work flawlessly… book your ticket out online. Then Mali will call them and tell them to stop for you in Pa Pae. If you leave at the normal time, Mali sends a driver to buy the tickets and tells them to stop for you.
I had a great time on the retreat and was very impressed in all aspects. The facilities, staff, teaching monk’s wisdom, and of course food were all top-notch. I appreciated the relaxed nature and gentle introduction to Buddhism/meditation
The three day retreat has been such a valuable experience. If you are interested in your personal development and have played with the idea of trying out or deepening your meditation practice you will be very pleased at Pa Pae. The package which is offered in exchange for a voluntary donation includes accommodation, food, meditation, easy to understand Buddhist teachings and a couple of easy free time activities. Everybody’s experience is unique and so is the contribution to our lives, but as a person who has tried out meditation before, is into yoga and currently investing in my personal growth, I have no regrets. It is the opposite, I feel like I have gained an initial overview of the meditation practice and of the wisdom required to meditate effectively and successfully. I am very grateful to Mali and the Monk for their gifts to my life.
So I will be honest, I didn’t want to go to Pa Pae, at all.My fiance and my brother prodded me to go with them and after much discussion I reluctantly agreed. A decision that I am now very happy with. To provide some context, I’m not religious and not very spiritual so I was a little bit skeptical of what to expect at the retreat. However, it didn’t take very long for me to be fully immersed in the learning experience and enjoying my time at Pa Pae. I found that the environment and natural setting were conducive to learning and created a very ambient setting. The monks at the retreat were great. They were willing to answer questions, discuss mediation techniques, and elaborate on their own experiences. I was nervous that it would be TOO monastic, but the monks were able to relate very well to everyone and provide the type of context that is fundamental for learning and integration without preaching. In fact, the monks were very accommodating and there was at no point in the retreat that I felt anything but genuine friendship with them. I will close with this, I’m not going to say I achieved some mystical spiritual awakening but I will say that I learned a lot about myself, Buddhism, and how to live more mindfully in my personal and professional life. I will continue to try and meditate because even as a skeptic, I can’t deny the very tangible benefit it had on me. I highly recommend this retreat and hope you can take as much away from it as I did.
Wow, I was nervous going to this retreat but I am extremely glad I went and even more grateful that I choose this specific experience. The teaching monk has so much knowledge to share, that really helps shift your perspective on success, possessions, problems and so much more. The retreat centre is beautiful, and they have a great approach to meditation. Their approach isn’t near as strict as many other programs I’ve looked into, but still has enough structure for benefit. The experience that they have put together has gone above and beyond. They also had some spiritual books/Buddhist to read while on silent time… in a hammock. Loved this.
A very beautiful secluded place to get out of the hustle and bustle of the days and return to yourself. It is suitable both for beginners who have never meditated and want to learn it, and for experienced practitioners who will be able to prolong their practice.A large area of the center and many places for meditation are available, and there is also an opportunity to walk nearby into the forest and admire the beautiful sunsets from the hill. The food is very tasty and nutritious, so despite the two meals a day and only until noon, you can safely stick to this schedule. The accommodation conditions are good enough to get enough sleep and feel rested, although modest. The practices are conducted by Buddhist monks who have devoted a lot of time to inner work and meditation and are happy to share their accumulated experience. The schedule of classes is not very stressful and can even be expanded through your own practice.
I post this as I feel it is my duty to share with seekers of truth what I find lacking. This is my personal opinion of the ordination and experience over 6 months at Papae. As a monk who knows the true teachings of the Buddha in the suttas and taught meditations under the power tree by moon hall for months at Papae, I leave this,I won’t recommend this place to anyone except to visit the land and connect with the tree in meditation.I had students tell me in person and writing that they went deeper in the tree sessions than the others meditations they had there from the other monks, abbott included.I personally witnessed with other people the two faces of this place. The do as I say not as I do attitude of the Abbott and the other “monks” along with verbal and physical acts of aggression, lies, taking what does not belong to them are just some of the things that were happening there. The entire Dhammakaya system is riddled with Hinduism and false beliefs and practices. PaPae further ads insult to injury with its “superman” concept and inept “organic freedom” misrepresentations with people in robes who aren’t worthy of the programmed obedience given by the misguided lay community.I have 20 years of experience in the Goenka tradition vipassana and found mahasi meditation to be of similar quality. Both use anapanasati and mahasatipatana techniques directly from the suttas. This is samatha and vipassana, the two aspects of insight meditation. There is absolutely no 7 bases of the mind nor mantra and visualization in the Theravada sutta meditations.Ask CHAT GPT what the Theravada sutta meditations are!!!If you want to know more about the real Buddhism that I know and teach, the photo attached explains the essentials. Please, feel free to email me [email protected] for more details.I feel that everyone at PaPae has the great potential to change and grow in dhamma so they can be real with themselves and then be truthful to others. They must let goOf clinging to silabbata paramasa and start actually meditating together morning and night minimum.Chanting, dana for merit, water blessings, food blessings are not able to liberate people to enlightenment. We must move away from the old harmful ways of societal norms and pressure from religion, police, and army rule into a peaceful, cooperative resource based society with no class distinctions. One movie I highly recommend to help you see the truth of this capitalistic, economic slavery is (ZEITGEIST – ADDENDUM) on YouTube. It will help you see the necessity of self transformation to transcend the current monopoly and move into a resource based civilization of oneness, equality, freedom, and ultimate liberation from samsara.I send the Brahmaviharas to all in the most truthful way available to me.???
