This is a great way to get to know Thai food and to get the confidence to try lots of different things in the food markets. We were in a group of 6 and went to two different markets. We shared all sorts of dishes and learnt a lot about how the markets operate and how different food is prepared. My only criticism is that at the first market we were given a lot of food to share, both savoury and dessert. We then went across town and had more savoury and sweet food. Everyone was just too full to really enjoy the second market and it felt like having two separate full meals with lots of sweet stuff at the end. So better planning/pacing of the tour by the guide would have helped. Don’t eat too much earlier in the day in order to fully enjoy it!
If you haven’t tried “khao soi” then you haven’t reached Chiang Mai ^_^ This is the famous food of this province. It is creamy, slightly spicy and very delicious. I have a vegan friend who could even order the vegan version by not adding any meat. The rich creamy coconut milk in this noodle dish is good enough to satisfy any taste buds. There are many foods to try but khao soi is definitely my favorite.
We booked both the morning and evening food tours with Sun. He was EXCELLENT!!! We tried so many foods that we wouldn’t have even known how to get without his terrific guidance. He was educational and just a fun person to spend time around. If you’re going to Chiang Mai, this is an excellent way to see what’s available!
omg i ate so much i nearly popped.we met our host, AEI, in the morning and as a shy person i always get a little nervous meeting new people but she was lovely. lots of laughs and smiles right off the bat so it felt like we had simply met up with an old friend. this was a fantastic day with lots to see and do and LOTS to eat. i recommend that if you are staying in the city for a few nights do this tour on your first day as there are bound to be things you want to try again before you leave. Aei, has so much knowledge on the foods and areas she takes you to that it really is an educational day out. we paid a bit extra to do the 1 on 1 pvt tour and to be honest with you i wouldn’t have it any other way because we walked away feeling we made a friend. an absolute asset to the company would highly recommend
Last week I took the “Taste of the North & Old Town Chiang Mai Walk” led by Phan(?). Despite seeing very positive reviews below, my experience was lackluster. We got some really good food, but the guide was not able to provide the kind of depth that I had hoped and have experienced on other similar tours. The tour consisted of the following elements:* We quickly walked through a small marketplace where the guide gave moderately detailed explanations of different spices, fruits/veggies, and meats. * We took a taxi (red two-bench truck) to the edge of the old town and got Khao Soi at a great little restaurant. * We went to a nearby temple to digest.* We took a taxi to the three kings monument where the guide talked about the history of Chiang Mai. * Walked to another restaurant. On the way, we grabbed a small dessert for later and got coconut granita. * At that restaurant, we tried many different dishes from the region. Everything was good, but the place definitely seemed more tourist-centric than “best of” Chiang Mai. The majority of the food for the day was from this restaurant. * We walked to one of the biggest temples in the old city and attended a “monk chat.” I felt pushed into attending “monk chat” to kill extra time we had at the end. * We ended with tea at a nearby hotel with cool architecture and outdoor seating. It was nice to be able to ask the tour guide about life in Chiang Mai and cultural norms. I thought that this was more interesting than a lot of the food-centric discussions. The Khao Soi restaurant was also a highlight of the day.I was disappointed that we only spent a short time in the market, as I was really looking forward to this part of the tour. Additionally, the majority of the food from the day came from one restaurant. Trying to eat so much at one time was difficult, it would have been nice if this was spread out more. I don’t think we attended 6 tasting locations as advertised on the website. I also asked a lot of food questions that I don’t think were too advanced that the guide wasn’t able to give great answers to.When comparing to other activities we did in Thailand, I would say that it was not worth the $50/person, but your mileage will vary depending on the tour guide.
We were our own group of 8 people and we had a great day with Farm. We had a short time in Chiang Mai–and when this happens, I like to book a tour so that we get max exposure to things we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. And this tour did not disappoint. We started with Khao Soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai–which we had already eaten at the day before since it pops up on all the top Khao Soi lists out there including Andy Ricker of Pok Pok fame. But we were all so happy to be back! Then it was time for a good overview of some of the best Wats in Chiang Mai–there’s so many that having a guide help navigate the highlights was important to our group. We did a market, had coconut ice, learned about the town and then it was time to eat again! Mae Pa Sri didn’t disappoint–even though we were still a little full from the Khao Soi and other treats. We’d def put this place on our do again list. We did some more temple touring and finished with an amazing ginger tea in a nice spot! Thanks Farm and Chiang Mai food tours! Highly recommend!
This tour was SO much fun. Our guide (Farm) was so genuine and welcoming. To start this was the first food tour I’ve ever been on where they wrote out the names and preparations of the dishes for me to take home, which was both helpful as a reference and a cool souvenir. I loved the balance between stopping and walking, we got to see a ton of stuff in the city but it felt like there were nice breaks to regain energy as well, and seeing temples in between the food stops was a great way to experience local culture and rebuild an appetite. The khao soi stop was really special, but I also loved that as things caught our eye our guide encouraged us to try them even if they weren’t on the “script”. I think my only suggestion would be to have a bit more depth on how the food itself is prepared vs. just what it is.
Incredible tour. Guide was the perfect intermediary between us and the local food vendors. We tried probably 10+ different kinds of food, most of which we never would have tried on our own.Highly recommend.
We had a great great time at the cooking class. We were picked up on time from our hotel and driven to the market to collect produce and learn more about Thai products. We tried a few items, and were allowed to ask to try whatever we liked! Our guide walked us through lots of different types of food, teaching us the uses and the history. Once back at the cooking school, we set about making some of the most amazing dishes we’ve had in Thailand. Everything was super clean and tidy, and were walked through our chosen dishes really well. We got much more hands on than a lot of cooking classes. Our host was simply amazing, nothing was too much trouble and she taught us many new things! The morning tour is a must for foodies!
