We spent 3 days with our excellent guide Noon on Koh Yao Noi Island. A fantastic way to visit this island, meet some locals and really start to get a sense of life on the island, as well as spending some time visiting some beautiful islands in one of the most picturesque bays I’ve ever travelled to. I highly recommend getting off the usual tourist path a bit and exploring Koh Yao Noi. We felt very well looked after, especially travelling with two young children.
It’s been a great experience to spend two days with a local family in Ban Talae Nok and meet their culture. It’s a fantastic way of knowing Thai culture, food and people and collaborating with a social project. We highly recommend it!
I spent 2 days and 1 night with Andaman Discoveries program in community Ban Talae Nok & it exceeded my expectations. I was reviewing for my site Earth-Changers.com & don’t doubt they have their values & priorities in the right place, very focused on community positive impact & social benefits.Plus it was a wonderful customer experience. I was interested in their post-Tsunami community support & found a community very positive, proactive & empowered. The homestays were prettier, spotlessly clean & much more relaxed than I expected. It was a joy to spend time with the Ladies cooperative & try my hand at various crafts. They were all lovely, as was Andaman Discoveries fluent Thai tour manager, a vital interface & bridge to cross cultural learning & sharing.
The team at GOOD Travel booked this Andaman Discoveries homestay for the group I was traveling with. This was my first experience with GOOD Travel as well as with Andaman Discoveries. But it won’t be my last.I had read all of the information they provided and had Googled some on my own. I also spoke with friends who were familiar with GOOD Travel and Andaman Discoveries. So I was confident in my understanding of what was to occur. But I didn’t “get it” till we drove into the village of Ban Tale Nok and were greeted by one of the village leaders. That’s when the experience began taking on meaning that I had not anticipated. And thus began my transformation in Thailand.Lindsey, our Andaman Discoveries guide, had a warm neighborly relationship with the villagers she introduced us to. She knew the names of their children and her exchanges with the villagers reminded me of the conversations my mother used to have with neighbors and passers-by when I was a boy growing up in a small town in Georgia. They spoke of things that mattered to them. The village leader, an easy-going fisherman with a slow smile, told us about his community and answered our questions as he showed us around the village… the beach where the tsunami hit, the lasting impact of erosion, the health station, the mosque. He and Lindsey then introduced us to our “host moms,” who insisted that we sit for the lunch of fresh seafood and vegetables that they had prepared for us using the culinary traditions of that region. The meal, like the tidy straightforward home we sat in, was an unadorned act of kindness and generosity that was as warm and inviting as any I have ever had. And what’s not to love about authentic Thai dishes prepared by someone with the title, “mom?”There were four of us… all men, ravenous travelers eager to be guests. Our hosts seemed to enjoy watching us receive their hospitality, so they kept on being hospitable… even when my rather sizable American ass broke a stool apparently designed only for Thai behinds. We made soap as we learned about the village economy in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. And we probably looked kind of silly crafting panels out of long skinny leaves, but Lindsey and the villagers made it lots of fun. At nightfall, our hosts served dinner on the beach, giving us the opportunity to socialize with various members of the community. The highlight of the evening for me, though, was running around on the beach with the children, taking turns inventing games we all could play.I had my first bucket shower that night, and went to bed feeling refreshed. Open. Falling asleep in a tiny fishing village on the Andaman Sea was, in a sense, revelatory. It gave me the opportunity for self-exploration; to observe myself in the world differently and to gain a new perspective on my impact as a consumer. I felt like I think Anthony Bourdain, the late chef, author and travel documentarian, must have felt countless times on his forays into parts unknown. It also gave me a new perspective on roosters: they crow whenever they feel like it, and not just when the sun comes up. And sometimes they help you go to sleep when you’re in a tiny fishing village on the Andaman Sea.Andaman Discoveries says that its programs are collaborative and “use local resources to have a positive human, environmental and financial impact.” As far as I’m concerned, Mission Accomplished.
Having the opportunity to share life time with Mokens at Koh Surin was a great experience and precious moments. Thank you Andaman Discoveries and in particular Tui for your involvement and shared experience.
This was my 4th Andaman tour on my 4th visit to Thailand. I have done homestays at 2 of the villages and Moken day trip 3 or 4 times now. I love these experiences. This is the difference between being a tourist and actually sharing experiences and time with the people and the place in which you are traveling. The planned activities are fun, things that I probably would never do otherwise. The hosts and guides are really welcoming in sharing their worlds and interacting with us. I always learn something and come away with a new perspective. The Andaman staff are committed to serving both the visitors and the communities and families they are partnering with, which is the main reason why I choose Andaman Discoveries. I highly recommend!
Andaman Discoveries organised a very special trip for our students! It was very well organised, our guides were simply amazing and I felt like we really got to know Thailand. Our guides, Tui and Pibi, really did their best to make our students try new things (culture and food wise). We stayed in great places and undertook some really nice activities.Thank you very much Andaman Discoveries! I would highly recommend using their services
Whilst I have ever visited Thailand many times as a tourist, the homestay experience in Ban Thale Nok village was totally different from my experiences in Thailand so far, it was really fascinating!I could understand deeply about how local villagers make a living, how they overcome from tsunami disaster in 2003, and I could receive their hospitality.I could enjoy soap making, traditional snack making, fishing, and so on.Andaman Discoveries is a well-organized tour operator, who attach much value on community based and responsible tourism.I think using their services means to contribute on villagers’ life.
I did the 4 day “Beach Village & Moken Experience” Tour. These tours are a great way to experience and get to know the local communities while also supporting them financially. It seemed to me that the organization really cares about helping the local people and gives them a very fair amount of money (this is often not the case with other organizations offering similar experiences). The whole trip was very well organized by Tui. She also came along as my translator along with an intern named Earn. It was great to have both of them along the whole time because they helped me engage with the locals by acting as translators. It was really interesting learning about the Moken way of life and visiting their village. However, I wish I knew how crowded this area would be. There are boat loads of people coming to visit them every day. However, if you want to visit them, Andaman discoveries definitely seems the most authentic way to do so because we actually can engage with them. If you spend the night, you must camp in tents at the national park headquarters. There were probably 100 tents all very close together and you all eat at the same dining area (like an outdoor cafeteria). This part of the trip was a bit less enjoyable for me because I like to get off the beaten path more. There is an area nearby where you can rent little cabins.. this would be a bit more expensive, but perhaps a nicer experience. Staying with the Muslim family in the village was the highlight of the trip for me. I got to visit several different homes in the village and do several different activities. This felt much more authentic and unique. If you are looking for a tour with a homestay, I highly recommend this company.
Our trip with Andaman Discoveries to visit the Moken people and explore the Surin Islands was fantastic! The cultural exchange with the Moken community was respectful and eye-opening, while the eco-friendly approach made us feel good about our travel choices. The Surin Islands were stunning, and the snorkeling was incredible. Everything was well-organized, and Tui, our guide was knowledgeable and passionate. We highly recommend Andaman Discoveries for an enriching and responsible travel experience.
