Jungle cooking schoolWe got picked up by the owners fathers, a short drive in the back of a pick up to the farm. We were first shown around the small holding and smelt all the amazing herbs etc and was then taught how to get the flesh of a coconut out of the shell. We then all help to make a red curry, making the paste from scratch. The cat Big Boy was lovely and our chef (Blue Sky) was lovely and seemed to know a few words in a lot of languages. They cooked rice in leaves and with a bamboo shoot and all the dishes were served in a bamboo shoot split in half. Overall a great way to spend an evening. Thank you
Really interactive cooking class with our very insightful guide, You! Food was great and definitely worth the value!!
Good cooking lesson. You can do it al yourself and after making, lunch is served. All the vegetables are in huis own garden.
The whole experience was worth every single moment and money! U showed us his garden full of veg and seasonings prior to making a delicious curry, rice being cooked in bamboo, bamboo shoots, greens and a tofu dish. I was skeptical at first as a vegan, but we was well accommodated!
Really interesting and informative experience. The people are very nice and charming. Food was also excellent. Thank you.
Amazing experience! Yoo is a very passionate, friendly guy, who guides you around his farm selecting all the herbs and vegetables for the dishes. We all helped making coconut milk the traditional way, cutting up vegetables and herbs before making a curry paste and bamboo cooked rice. Truly amazing family and experience I will never forget!
Great cooking class at the farm! Really enjoyed it and definitely worth every penny. Leaning how to cook traditional Thai food with fresh organic produce! Would definitely recommend!
We had a very fun cooking class where we learned much about the Thai cuisine. The host and his helpers were very enthousiastic!
Reading through all these glowing reviews makes me wonder if they were having an off night tonight because our experience was very disappointing. We booked the experience through our hotel and were picked up at 1600 and taken to a farm about 5 minutes away. The farm was beautiful and the young man showing us around and letting us touch and smell the various ingredients was very enthusiastic about his craft. We were shown to the beverage fridge and encouraged to help ourselves to drinks. We then helped prepare the ingredients for red curry, a pumpkin dish and a “salad” made of morning glory. There were 14 of us there for the class and there was enough food for us all to get a bite of each of the dishes. Plus some plain white rice. There was a young boy about 7 years old who kept asking his mom where the rest of the food was, saying he was hungry and wanted more. Sorry, no extras except the morning glory dish, which was tasteless and wasn’t going to fill anyone’s belly. Many of us in the group made plans to go eat dinner afterward, as this ended up being more like an appetizer. Then as we were leaving we were told we’d need to pay for all our drinks, even the water. This would have been fine if we’d known ahead of time, but never was it mentioned that we’d have to pay for these, so several people hadn’t brought money with them. To end the night we were driven back to our hotels… sort of. We were dropped off across the street and down the road and left to cross the busy road because apparently it was too much trouble to drop us at our hotel even though this was part of the experience we paid for. The driver was hawking loogies out the window throughout our drive, which made me glad I didn’t get to eat very much as it turned my stomach.
So while this was a fun activity to do in Khao Sok, I do want to warn future participants. Yoo picked me and a group up from our hostels for the cooking class. The expectation was that he would drop us off as well. We all had a great time at his farm. When it was time to head back at the end of the night, Yoo was clearly inebriated/drunk when he hopped in his pickup to drive us back. This made us worried and we didn’t want to chance on “luck”, so one participant in the class volunteered to drive us all back in Yoo’s truck. It doesn’t matter how many times he has done this, but I am writing this review so that you may consider arranging your rides ahead of time.In addition, know that it is not a cooking school, so you will not have your own cooking equipment and make your own dishes. They are shared dishes, and Yoo will have one person participate in a certain task. My photo is of the shared dishes amongst 6 people (don’t expect to be full). As someone who is familiar with Thai food, I will say that the recipes are very basic and felt like it lacked flavor to accommodate tourists.
While it seems all the reviews here are about their cooking classes there is a group using this name to do trips to floating bungalows so I feel like I need to share this review here too.DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS EXCURSION. You will not be on a family run trip with up to 20 other people. They combine your one, very uncomfortable boat with 20 people on it with 4-5 other boats, so you’re in a group of over 100 people. Getting to the pier with the boat is a chaos of multitudes of mini vans coming in at the same time. They chuck you under a tree to wait and then suddenly ask for cash to enter the park. Once on the boat you have to jump over benches to find a spot and then they tell you to put on a janky life vest that isn’t going to save anyone. Then you sit on a wooden plank for 2 hours to where the bungalows are. On the way the stop temporarily is a cove for you to take pictures, which you can’t do without climbing over 20 other people, then at a cave. To get to the cave do they pull up to the pier that is in front of it? God no, that would make sense. Instead they hit the boat onto some rocks that you then have to clamber over while every other tourist on a trip just walks onto the pier. Then it’s back to the boat for another hour. Once you get to the “floating” bungalows you’re in for more surprises. They start to randomly assign the sheds to people and you have to fight to stay with your group. Then you get to a shed with beds on the floor, which they do describe accurately in the trip description so I’ll give them credit for that. Unfortunately many of my fellow guests found cockroaches IN the bedding before going to bed. Swimming is restricted to a small roped off area in front of the bungalows that are indeed floating, one a bunch of tied up oil barrels with a plastic jigsaw pier of sorts in front of them. They are, however, tied up to a shed that had the coastline right next to it. The “nighttime safari” is a 1/2 hour walk through the jungle where there was one monkey. The morning “safari” brought us one bison. I will say the meals at the bungalows as re good other than the fact that your eating with over a hundred other people. If you want to sit and relax for a swim while others are out trekking, you’re in for another surprise. They’re building more of these magnificent bungalows so you get to hear the sound of drills, electric saws and banging hammers. Want to go to the bathroom? Go over a 3 plank “bridge” and broken concrete steps to stalls where you can poop and thanks a shower all at once. Just make sure the monkeys don’t break in, that seems to be the place you can see them on the trip. Oh and grab some toilet paper FROM THE DINING HALL and be prepared to be immediately questioned on why you need toilet paper at all. The trip back is better than the trip out mostly because you know the trip will be over soon. Of course they had one more surprise in store for me. I’d paid for transport to one town and then decided to change my travel plans. I messaged them first to ask if they could provide transport to a different town or refund me. They said they’d be happy to refund me be side they didn’t go to Krabi. Except that they forgot to cancel the trip and suddenly decided they would not provid a refund despite my having it in writing. Thankfully the national park is truly and astoundingly beautiful, but just go see it with a different tour provider. This one is a sham
