This tour is a must,We went with CelTours they are amazing. It takes you back to nature with beautiful warm hearted Elephants. The whole experience is just amazing. We would recommend a visit to support these wonderful animals.
We’d yet to see Elephants on our short stay in Khao Lak and so on our day trip to Khao Sok our driver took us here which was very much in a more remote location and that benefitted us as we were the only ones visiting in the late afternoon. Thus it felt that we had a very intimate experience with their 41 year old female elephant who was adorable. Only downside…prices to feed with a basket of fruit each have risen dramatically since our last pre COVID visit to Phuket!
Unfortunately we were brought here on a multiple-activity tour, which promoted the experience as “ethical” and “eco”. Sadly this is not the case at this elephant “sanctuary”, which is no more than a circus where these poor elephants spend all day being forced to get in and out of the water up and down a small river bank with van-loads of tourists to be “washed” and scrubbed multiple times per day. They are then made to perform tricks like spraying water and posing for the camera, then it’s back out of the water to be fed piles of fruit and then posed yet again before the next van arrives and the miserable cycle continues. Day-in-day-out.People seem to justify this to themselves, because there is no riding involved here – but does anyone really believe that elephants need to be scrubbed 20 times per day by tourists, or that they really enjoy being posed for the camera..? One of the elephants seemed seriously depressed and refused to stand up in the water, as the mahoot kept telling everyone that she was “just stupid”.As we tried to have a peek around the back to see for ourselves what sort of conditions they were being made to live in, the tour guide started shouting and running over saying we were not allowed to go back there! Says everything about the place really. The entire experience made us feel extremely uncomfortable and we left the place utterly depressed, disappointed in ourselves for not doing proper research into where we were going. Sadly, it seems there are many factories like this one that have conned people into believing they are any different from all the other elephant torture centres all over Asia. Please do not support places like this, where they rent the elephants for high season purely to generate income. It is just another circus-act under the guise of being ethical. There is a far better place just down the road- Khao Sok Elephant Sanctuary – where they actually do rescue abused and ex-performer elephants. These elephants are allowed to roam as they please among the grounds and are not forced to do anything. We had a lovely short walk through the forest, as we learned about these gentle giants that seemed far happier and healthier with people that actually respect them. No “bathing” “trekking” or “posing for the camera”, they are simply allowed to relax and vistors have to do things on their time, like it or not! Ok, they are still not in the wild as they should be, but it’s places like Khao Sok Elephant Sanctuary that need support so that these amazing and beautiful animals can have a chance at a happy life. They should not be exploited just for this social-media-virtue-signalling photo-opportunity of this nonsensical “bathing”.
We intended to visit the ethical Elephant Sanctuary in Khao Sok, where rescued elephants are cared for in a safe environment, but were inadvertently taken to a different facility. At this location, we witnessed elephants confined to a small area, compelled to perform tricks and engage with visitors in a manner that felt exploitative. The elephants appeared distressed and unhappy, prompting us to leave immediately. We find this treatment to be ethically troubling and strongly discourage a visit to this operator. Instead, we recommend choosing a nearby sanctuary that offers a genuinely humane experience and allows elephants to live freely and joyfully.
