I did the Local Lifestyle Chiang Mai Workshop with Kevin today and it was just as amazing as all the previous reviewers said! Even though I made a last minute booking, he made every effort to tailor it to my needs and interests. Not only did I come away with some great shots, but also a renewed sense of inspiration and motivation to learn more about the post-production and editing phase, something Kevin gave me a great intro to. I also gained insight into local culture through an expat’s eyes and a list of restaurant recommendations that I will definitely be trying! A great way to spend my first day in Chiang Mai!
My Wife and I, had a wonderful day with Kevin and Pansa in Chiang Mai, in the first week of June. The photography experience was a real valuable eye opener for us. Both Kevin and Pansa are great communicators of their visions and concepts of their photographic skills. From the initial discussions over a coffee, to the market experience and the temples, and a great chat over a delightful lunch, the complete day was an enjoyable day. This workshop was a great way to start our month in and around Chiang Mai, and the tips and new ideas from that day, inspired us both, to enjoy our photography on a new level.
I have done a few photo workshops and this one surpassed them all. From the point of booking it has been such a positive experience and I can honestly say I came away having actually learnt something about how to better use my camera rather than just be taken to photogenic spots and let loose. Both Kevin and Pansa are personable and knowledgeable about photography and of course Chiang Mai. They readily shared their knowledge and skills. We had a great lunch along the way too. It was just me on this trip and I had such a good day. They run a photowprkshp for their homestay that I would love to do one day. This is not a cheap day out but totally worth the cost.
My husband and I have recently stayed with Kevin and Pansa for 2 nights in their beautiful homestay accomodation whilst I undertook a two day customised photography workshop. For anybody who really wants to propel their understanding of photography to the next level, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The course was fully customised to my level of understanding and to my desired genre/s of photography. There is no other way to describe Kevin other than he is an absolute expert at what he does. His passion for photography is infectious and he loves sharing his art form with those that show some passion, no matter their level of understanding. He clearly loves people and loves what he does.Pansa is also a very gifted photographer in her own right; some of her people shots are astounding and her insight in composition and creativity was amazing. The flexibility and the one on one nature of the workshop is what I valued the most. If you are willing (and have the energy) Kevin will work with you from 7 in the morning until very late in the evening on each day; they are both extremely generous with their time. You also have the option to stay on their property and photograph or if you’d prefer to explore other areas of Chiang Mai with them for inspiration they will take you there. The structure of the course is really up to you. Kevin and Pansa really opened their homes and hearts and love sharing their passion. They have both inspired me to be a better photographer and have given me the skills to do so. Really there is nothing more you can ask for other than that. Great people, amazing accomodation and food and best course I’ve ever done. I can’t thank them enough!
I had an absolutely wonderful day with Kevin in Chiang Mai. It was a one-on-one lesson as Kevin showed me around various areas of Chiang Mai, off the beaten tourist path, and let me pick areas I wanted to go to as well! I have a Nikon Coolpix B500 and Kevin got me from novice on automatic only to using manual mode properly in just over an hour! My photographs visibly improved with all of the tips and tricks he shared with me, showing me how he viewed a busy market scene and could break down shots of one view in different ways. Seeing the silver temple and the young monks working was a highlight of the day! Kevin was incredibly kind and patient throughout the day and we had a nice lunch at an isolated café and spoke about photography! Kevin even drove a way out of the way to show me how to photograph betta fish (an animal I research at University) and fish in tanks, with artificial lighting and glass issues etc. I’m just very sorry it has taken me so long to give my review – life catches up with you! Oh and Kevin critiques photographs on his YouTube channel and gave me some wonderful feedback on some photos I had taken later on in Chiang Mai, which I really appreciated! I had a really wonderful day with Kevin and the next time I am in Chiang Mai I would love to another workshop with him in the future!
Kevin taught me to tell stories with my photographsI recently returned from a 5 day photo workshop/retreat with the amazing Kevin LJ. I had taken a few courses in the past but honestly none of it really stuck with me. This time was different. Kevin is an amazingly patient teacher and his passion for photography (and teaching) shines through and is contagious. I believe that the success I feel this time is because by staying in their lovely guesthouse I was immersed in photography all day and into the evening. It was intense (at my request) as I had a lot to learn but being able to sit out on their lovely balcony overlooking rice fields, fruit trees and a Chedi in the evening was rejuvenating. I took several pictures of the landscape trying to capture the beauty but the photos did not do it justice. It wasn’t until I took a video and captured not only what I saw but also the symphony of frogs, crickets, occasional birds, and running water from a small stream into the rice patty that I was able to capture the magic of Suan Sook Homestay. In addition to all that – I have to say that I was spoiled with fantastic Thai food created by the very sweet Pansa – Kevin’s wife. The only thing that I regret was letting the price delay my decision to take the course. Yes the cost is high but I can honestly say that you get what you pay for – absolutely top quality instruction and overall experience.
If you are an enthusiast or someone wanting to refine their photography craft, this course is a wonderful opportunity to do so.Kevin is full of knowledge, and he is wonderfully humble in how he communicates information and tips to you. You will learn how to approach locals, learn to interact with them, and of course learn the best ways to photograph them.My trip goals were to start the process of learning how to incorporate street photography and blend it with travel photography. After a short conversation on photography goals and photo talk, he knew where to lead me into our photos.This workshop is a must do while in Chaing Mai.
