I attended a 5-day yoga retreat led by Gernot in Chiang Dao. Gernot is a superb yoga teacher. He sent us a short simple questionnaire before the retreat and tailored the yoga to our specific needs. Gernot is not the teacher to go to if you want better photos for your yoga Instagram feed or to achieve some impossible pose. He leads yoga that won’t injure you, that will help you improve alignment and posture, and will generally improve your wellbeing. His teaching is based an an incredible knowledge of physiology which he communicates really engagingly. He has spoilt me for other yoga teachers, who so often ask you to strive for poses that are not good for you. I will be using his extensive notes now (sent to us after the retreat) to help structure my personal practice.
I’ve looked forward to taking classes from Gernot over the past two years whenever I’m in Chiang Mai. His knowledge of anatomy and biological reasons behind certain yoga positions and practices is very appealing to anyone who has a science background. There is a spiritual side to be sure, but I have never know any other yoga teacher with this unique perspective. Gernot is very knowledgeable on yoga and anatomy. I took a private class with him, followed his classes in different yoga studios in CM, and now doing his online classes. I signed up for private sessions with Gernot because I have some hip and low back issues that my personal yoga practice often aggravate. It’s not a stretch to say I learned more from three thorough sessions with him than I did in my yoga teacher training. And by “more”, I mean all those subtle little biomechanical adjustments that make a massive difference. Gernot has an incredible knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and it’s so well integrated into his yoga knowledge. Step by step, we went through all of my “troubling” asanas and transitions that produce pain and tension, and even those sneaky ones that feel fine but aren’t doing my body any favours. There are certain things (bad movement habits) I simply couldn’t have known without his insight and expertise. And I can apply them to my practice with instant results. My practice (and body) are forever improved thanks to his knowledge and guidance. I highly recommend Gernot’s classes (I go to those too) as well as his one-on-one teaching.
