  1. This gallery has both an excellent permanent collection as well as special shows highlighting some of Burma’s best artists. On Faham Rd., THE street to see some of the best Asian crafts. The owner is very well connected to Burmese artists inside and outside Burma. Was especially important to many of us through the dictatorship. Now art and politics are flourishing even more

  2. If you would love to see a great collection by budding Burmese artists then you should visit this lovely gallery. Mar Mar brings these paintings to the fore, supporting and explaining how we can now access these wonderful pieces from a country, that until recently, was reluctant to share these pictures. I have purchased several pieces over the years and love every single one.Mar Mar is very gracious and gentle, please help her to support this wonderful venture.

  3. As I have a strong interest in Burma and in art, and this gallery is recommended in the Lonely Planet guide and my other small Northern Thailand guidebook, I have made at least three different visits to this excellent place to see the various different exhibitions. I also recently attended one evening opening function for a new exhibition here. It’s easy to find and in a convenient location, along the Mae Ping river in an area with many other art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. This area has many beautiful traditional Thai wooden buildings, and is a venue for live music and concerts at night. Located nearby are the Good View Restaurant, the Riverside Restaurant, Rarinjinda Spa, The Gallery restaurant, and the Meeting Room, as well as the Sikh temple (never seems to be open!) and Wat Ketkaram. The one problem here is the DANGEROUS TRAFFIC…vehicles SPEED down this narrow road at like 100 km an hour!. (The policemen posted along the roadside at night and outside various hotels help deal with this, though.) Though this gallery is smaller than many of the other places in this area, it’s easy to spot, because of the English board. It’s open normally daytime hours between 10 am and 5 pm, including Sundays. As with the Meeting Room, the owners do a lot with a small space. There are two rooms, (one is labelled differently as ‘Ida Gallery”), with some permanent objects (such as the painted owls for good luck), and a rotating exhibition, always by an artist from Myanmar/Burma or a group of artists. The exhibitions normally comprise paintings with landscapes and people, although some are abstract. Many of them show temples, village scenes, riverside scenes, and other landscapes from Yangon, Bagan, the Irawaddy RIver, and other areas of Myanmar. Many of them are brightly colored. There are also booklets with prints of paintings by the current artist. This gallery is run by the MON group of people…one of the minority groups in Burma that have their own state. There are some Mon refugees in Chiang Mai, and I met some of them at the “Myanmar in Transition” conference this July. They were the very first people to bring Buddhism to Thailand, and had great kingdoms in ancient times. Their temples are in a distinctive style…I found out from the archaeologists at the conference that there are no Mon-style temples in Chiang Mai, but there are some in Lamphun. I saw some beautiful Mon dancers at the Flower Festival here in Chiang Mai in February 2014. The Mon people are highly artistic. The owners here can speak good English and are usually friendly, but vary according to their moods. The opening I attended about two weeks ago was at 6 pm on a Friday and had a slow trickle of people in and out. The Burmese artist from Yangon was present to answer questions, and he spoke English well! Many Mon and other Burmese people were also there, and I was able to meet some Burmese students who are attending Chiang Mai University medical college. There was free wine, and a selection of carrots and celery with hummus and other dips and Thai chips, as well as fruit punch. The event was supposed to last till 9 pm according to the email event list posting, but finished half an hour early. There are many useful magazines here for tourists, such as GUIDELINES and COMPASS. I was able to take one GUIDELINES magazine home and get a very useful map of Chiang Mai and surrounding areas. But the owners wouldn’t let me read the magazines during the opening!

  4. The beautiful wooden building is filled with wonderful art work and traditional art form of Burma. Must visit

  5. Nicely preserved the art form of Burma. The gallery is a wooden building which is itself very beautiful. The Burmese traditional craft is very beautiful.

  6. I visited this wonderful Burmese art gallery late December 2014. But it is never too late to give credit to its owner Mar Mar and her kind assistant ( a painter too). I bought 2 beautiful paintings by a Burmese artist and my son acquired one from another painter. We paid 2 visits to the gallery and the owner couldn’t be more knowledgeable and proud of her wonderful Burmese collection. The exhibits were ranging from 20th century impressionists to modern and contemporary Burmese artists. I had already been very impressed by Myanmar artists on a trip the previous year. The gallery itself, over two floors is charming and inspiring. It is situated on a road that runs along the Ping river, between two bridges and therefore walking distance from Chiang Mai centre. Upon returning home to my country, there was another painting that I had seen at the gallery, turning round and round in my head. I emailed Mar Mar and she had it shipped. Her website deserves to be visited and so does the gallery if you go to Chiang Mai.
