Wow!! What an absolutely fabulous day spent with Dang, an amazing, knowledgeable tour guide. We spent a couple of hours in a long tail boat watching the pink dolphins feeding in the bay. We were lucky enough to see a mothers and baby and felt privileged to be able to quietly observe their behaviour. However, it was spoilt when a large speed boat arrived packed with tourists from Koh Samui. This frightened the dolphins off. We watched as they persued them for a while and then left. Shortly after the departure of the speed boat 2 mother dolphins with babies returned to feed alongside us. It was so special.Dang, our guide, has spent 10 years in the area studying the dolphins and was able to identify them and give us information regarding their ages etc. His knowledge and passion for ecology made this such an informative, interesting day.Dang then waved over a small passing fishing boat and asked what they had caught. When we saw the amazing large prawns in their catch, he bought them and we had them for lunch with rice, cooked in the local fisherman’s village. Its the freshest fish we have ever eaten. We also visited a wonderful cave, one of the best we have seen and had our toes nibbled by some fish in a natural river. This was a day we will never forget, mostly thanks to Dang and the wonderful pink dolphins.
While touring Southern Thailand with my grand children and their parents, we decided to stop at Khanom to see the dophins. The weather was poor, the sea was tough and we were told that, due to these conditions, trips to see the dolphins could not go ahead. After reading reviews about this company I went to their shop to see what they could do. I was told that there was no problem, they would drive us a short way up the coast where things were calmer and we would get to see the dolphins. I booked for the next morning and, as promised, after a half hour drive, we were taken to a viewpoint up the coast by the excellent Dang, where we watched some dolphins arrive in the beautifuuk, calm bay beneath us. A short drive down to the beach and we were soon in a boat watching the dolphins around us as the chased the fish into the shallow water to eat. A great experience, many thanks to Dang for this and his commentary.
We had an incredible day out with our guide Doi. He was very knowledgeable and we saw so many pink dolphins, more than we had expected. We got to sit and watch them for two hours, it was amazing to watch them playing and feeding and just living naturally. Doi was passionate about the dolphins and very environmentally conscious. We moored the boat and just sat quietly watching the dolphins, which is the best way to enjoy these beautiful creatures without disturbing them. We also went to a viewpoint and a natural fish spa, which is a river where you put your feet in and the fish choose to clean them, not like the artificial spas. It felt like Khanom Tour have really invested time and effort into making the tour enjoyable, but with the least impact on the environment and I applaud them for this. Thank you Fei for organising this and Doi for a great day!
Had read about the pink dolphin tour on the south east Asia backpacking site and describing Khanom as a hidden gem of Thailand. That review inspired me and was a must to visit on my month trip to Thailand. My host at Ban Thanynan where I stayed, knew Mr Daeng and kindly booked me on a full day tour for the next day.I was the second pick of joining a family of 3. We then drove to pick up the last group of a family of 4. Daeng explained that he wished to change the order of the tour slightly if we agreed to it. Normally they drive straight to a boat and head out to sea to area where the pink dolphins often are that time of day. However this morning he wanted to take us to the highest point so that we could look out ourselves and hopefully spot them. Then we drive down to the boat and head out. We were all happy to do this. The viewpoint was amazing such beautiful views of the area.We spotted them and headed down to a long tail boa. Life jackets on we went out to sea. Daeng told us how the pink dolphins came to live here after he worked with the fisherman over some years to change their fishing habits. We were lucky to see several pink dolphins some fin the distance and a couple came close to the boat. We were also fortunate to see a family of humpback dolphins. We stopped at a fisherman’s home who showed us some of the catches of the day that would be in Daeng restaurant that evening.I would love to spend a week going out with Daeng admiring these wonderful species. We then got back I need the jeep to our next stop where we met a charming 80 year old who had been on the seas for 50 years. He had hand carved over 3000 pieces of fish from rock. Daeng explained how he did this and welcomed anyone back for a lesson on how to do this. We walked around his work and listened to various stories and key facts on some of the fish he had carved. His work is not for sale but he wishes on his death that the government keep his work as a museum for all to continue to see. How wonderful is that.We then went to a plantation where we had a wonderful tasty lunch from home grown produce. After lunch we walked around the plantation with Daeng explaining what things were and again learnt a lot.We then drove to a natural outdoor foot spa in the forest. These fish are not like those in fish tanks. They are approx 10-15cm in length. I was warned that they love fresh feet that haven’t experienced it before and they were not wrong. They swarmed around us. Get over the initial sensations and it is amazing. Feet felt amazing and they do not bite. Our final attraction was the cave. There is a climb up to it. Sadly due to an ankle injury I was still suffering with I had to sit this out but joined the staff guides who had finished for the day and had a welcome coffee. The y were in the cave for almost an hour and said I would have found it difficult as there are some up and down parts but they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We all sat and enjoyed a cold drink and chatted about the day before being dropped off at our stays. That evening I joined one family from our tour at Daengs fish restaurant which he picked us up and dropped us home after. Daeng is an exceptional tour guide and a true conservationist, His passion for nature, all animals and his live of this radiates from him. This is a must do trip if you venture to Khanom, amazing value and truly memorable tour.
We attended a half day tour to spot the dolphins. We liked this tour because it wasn’t about chasing them but staying put and letting the dolphins swim by. The quide was friendly and told us a lot of interesting facts.
It was a great day and a unique experience. We were so happy to see dolphines. Our guide was really nice and knew a lot about this animals. In addition to that he recpected them and it was really animal friendly. After we ate in a Restaurant and it was delicious and the people there are all so nice and happy. We are also vegetarians but this was no problem for them;)Also the rest of our tour the fishspa in the little river and the fresh water lake was fantastic. I think we never laughed that often with our guide. He was soooo nice and we had soo much fun. It was the the best day in our vacation. I can highly recommend this tour!!!!:)
Unfortunately, we didn’t see any dolphins, but still had a great day. Enjoyed the boattrip, the great lunch, the fish-spa, the cave, but above all our very friendly guide.
This was a highlight of our 4 week trip to Thailand. Nong was our guide and took great care of us, as well as making the day good fun and very memorable. We were the first boat to spot the pink dolphins and Nong gave us some time to enjoy the mother and baby alone before alerting the other boats. I was glad we kept a respectful distance.Lunch was delicious snd plentiful. The fish water spa was great. We couldn’t bear to keep our feet in at first, but once we got used to it we loved it and our feet were really soft afterwards. Lots of mossies around so use plenty of spray. We then swam in a lagoon and Nong made us laugh pretending to be eaten by a crocodile.A really lovely day – don’t miss it if you’re in the area.
