We are still a bit amazed by this experience. These must be one of the warmest and friendliest people I’ve ever met.We booked our cooking class via our hotel, we choose this cooking class because it seems to be one which takes place in a green and natural environment. Some classes also happen in the city, and that didn’t feel like the right fit for us.At 8:30 we were picked up from our hotel by Son in a very comfortable mini van. He drove us to a very nice market just outside of the busy city. We got a tour from Son, he showed us around to see what everything on the market was, which ingredients are what and how people prepare. Some very helpful insights when visiting a local market and you have no clue what all these beautiful products are that you’re looking at. We got some time to stroll the market while Son did some groceries for the class. After a short drive, not more than 30 min from the old centre, we drove into a lush green garden. The driveway was too small for this minivan, it was overwhelmed by nature. This turned out to be the garden farm of Son and his wife Tien. The one acre piece of land is filled with all different kinds of green, from citrus fruits to fresh pepper trees and the best range of basil I’ve ever smelled. We started with a tour of the grounds and Son shows you all the different vegetables, herbs, fruits and spices that he grows. You could really see that this man loves these products and he loves telling you about it.Okay, let’s get to the cooking. I mean the place is amazing! It is a very professional set up, big counters with double sinks, everyone gets their own apron, towel, cutting board an knife. Everything you might need is there. And then you start prepping all the ingredients, and you get to see these lovely products from the market again and the crazy good basil from the garden. We booked a half day course which means we cook 4 dishes. The steps are all very easy to follow and Son is there to help you out wherever you need. You cook with locally sourced products some even from their own backyard. The class is fun and educational. You use a variety of tools and equipment to prepare the ingredients. Basically you’re doing the mise en place. When everything is prepped you start cooking, which is really fast! Working with professional equipment makes you feel confident about the dish you’re cooking. And all of this under the guiding eyes of Son.Hmmm, eating this Thai food which is some of the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten, and then I realised I made it myself! How awesome! To round it up, the cooking class is a 10/10. For the chefs under us, the knifes are sharp and the equipment is there. But what really makes this experience unforgettable are Son and Tien. The place they created, the kindness the show and the incredible welcome feeling you have when walking around and cooking in their home is one of a kind.Tien and Son, thank you so much for this experience. 🙏
We had an amazing time at the Thai Garden Farm! Son and his wife Tien are beautiful, warm and welcoming people. We started with a little market tour at the outskirt of Chiangmai. After that we drove to the farm, which is around 20 minutes outside the city. Son took us on a little tour through his farm and we harvested fresh herbs and vegetables for our picked meals. The cooking took place in a big kitchen-dining area with an open floor plan, which offered a perfect authentic setting. The food we made was delicious! Especially the sticky rice with mango was the best I have ever eaten! We are very thankful for everything we learned that day – not just about cooking but about Thai life. We will never forget this day and this beautiful family. Thanks so much to Son and Tien. We definitely want to come back!
This was one of the highlights of our trip! A total MUST DO! We had the wonderful experience of meeting up with local farmer Sonthichai “Son” and his wife Sangtien “Tien”. Son picked us up from our vacation house, then gave us a tour through a local market explaining about the different kinds of rice, vegetables, a and herbs. Next into his farm which is also their home. Together they taught us to cook 4 traditional Thai dishes. Their farm had almost everything needed to cook our meal. All the fresh herbs and spices to make curry paste, the limes, eggs, fruits, sweeteners, chilis, and etc were all home grown. We had terrific conversations and felt like we were welcomed as family. My daughter went with us and had a terrific time as well. This experience was intimate and personalized. We definitely recommend everyone spend the time on a local farm experiencing first hand what this farmer grows, taste a variety of herbs and spices right out in the farm, make food, and fill your heart with joy! #travelingtothailandtogether🇹🇭
We had an amazing experience. The end of July we booked a halfday cooking class with two. Like described we were picked up in our hotel. Together with the chef we went to a local market. Afterwards we visited his garden and got a lot of information about different plants. In meanwhile Sangtien already cleaned the vegetables which we should use for our dishes. We prepared each 4 diffent courses. All the dishes were adapted to our wishes (we are not eating meat). We really enjoyed our evening and had a lot of lovely dishes to eat. We tried also a very nice homemade snack from Sangrien. We couldn’t finish the dessert, so we could bring it to our hotel. After eating we stayed longer to talk with them. Sangrien and Sonthichai are two really nice people. If we come back we will book this course immediately again.
Son picked us up at our hotel, took us to a market and explained Thai vegetables and their uses to us. He picked up a few vegetables we needed. Then we went to his amazing farm and met Sangtien. We had a tour of the amazing garden with explanations of the use of plants that we just see as ordinary everyday weeds. Then into the good stuff, food preparation and cooking the most amazing, yummiest food. The herbs and greens came from the organic garden. We ate what we cooked and got deliriously full, with some to take home for dinner. We had the greatest time at the school, learnt heaps about Thai cooking and culture, and can’t recommend this experience enough. If you go to Chiang Mai and enjoy Asian food, definately go and see Son and Sangtien and learn how to do it for yourself.
This class was excellent. Personal attention and guidance during cooking. Market visit to explain ingredient use and show variety and use of ingredients. Great facility with all utensils provided. Food was delicious with extra to take to hotel after. Timing of class and cooking of 6 different dishes within time frame. Well worth the time and price. Recommended highly for any Chiang Mai visit. Even got advice on other dishes.
We learnt a lot about fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, roots and how to cook it. Almost everything came from his own organic-garden. Thanks to his good english, many of our questions got answers. Thanks for this good day! Monique and Andy
We are a family of 5. With three teen and young adult children. We Had an amazing evening with Son and his charming wife Tien. Son started with a tour of the marketplace. He taught us how to pick our ingredients. Then he took us thru their personal organic garden. We smelt and learnt about each herb, leaf and raw material. We then made a 4 course meal. Noodles, thai curry, soup and dessert. He guided us thru our personal choice of dishes. The food was yum. The experience was unbelievable. Son and Tien were attentive, patient and supportive of our amateur attempts. Totally worth everything. A must try esp if food is an important aspect of your life and holidays.
What an experience lovely people who take you round the markets explain all the different ingredients, and take you through step by step. Super friendly, yummy food, helps you along the way 10 out of out 10 experience, at a very very good price. I hope to return someday 😀
One of our favorite experiences on a three week trip to Thailand. The half day morning class is the perfect amount of time. We loved the instructor and the entire organization was very well run , all by Women. Yay.
