Just got back from our latest liveaboard cruise and have to say this one was superb in every way. Every member of Steve’s team went out of their way to make our stay the best it could be. The Blue Dolphin is a great boat with every facility you need. The dive support team are always there and very willing to help, so everything, from getting into and out of the water through to the wonderful after-dive hot towel, is willing done, smoothly executed, and efficient. The dive team are all very professional, safe and skilled; our guide for the cruise was Bianna, an excellent diver who was knowledgeable, friendly and constantly happy. Always there to help, nothing was too much to ask. The food was consistently delicious, hot, plentiful and varied. We never felt hungry. I would absolutely recommend Big Blue Diving Khao Lak if you are looking for a diving great experience in Thailand – I have already re-booked back-to-back trips for March 2025.
If you are even remotely considering the Blue Dolphin for a Thai liveaboard experience, please take my advice and book it right now without hesitation. We just completed a 4-night tour out of Khao Lak and it was extraordinary. The recently refurbished boat is spacious and very comfortable. The staff are topnotch in their expertise, professionalism, and friendliness. The 4 dives/day schedule is just right. The food is delicious and plentiful. And maybe it was just our luck on this particular sailing, but the Blue Dolphin attracts a great group of customers — exactly what you want for a 4-night shared experience. Lots of kindness and positivity outshining language differences and not a single prima donna or grump. Here’s the kicker … my husband dives, but I do not. I brought 2 books on board and was fully prepared to spend my time reading and gazing off to the gorgeous horizon. The staff went out of their way to offer up snorkeling opportunities and ensure I felt as included in the overall key moments as the divers. Blue Dolphin is just a very, very special opportunity to see mind-blowing aquatic beauty and experience an adventure that fills your heart and recharges your soul.
OUR GROUP OF 4 ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVERS ENJOYED THE LIVEABOARD DIVING TRIP TO SIMILAN ISLANDS & RICHELIEU ROCK IN NORTH ANDAMAN SEA (THAILAND) WITH MV BLUE DOLPHIN FROM 20TH TO 24TH MARCH 2024. CRUISE DIRECTOR RIC PARKER SMOOTHLY SUPERVISED THE BOAT AND DIVE OPERATIONS WHICH WERE QUITE WELL ORGANIZED WHILE DIVE INSTRUCTORS JAI KENNEDY & BRIHANNA WERE EXCELLENT WITH THEIR EXPERT PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE. THE FOOD ON BOARD WAS SUPERB WITH A FAIR VARIETY OF MEAT AND FISH OPTIONS FOR MEALS AND DELICIOUS SNACKS. AS I AM A VEGAN, THE CHEF TOOK SPECIAL CARE TO PREPARE VEGAN MEALS FOR ME EVERY DAY. WE OPTED FOR A MASTER LOWER DECK CABIN WITH ENSUITE TOILET WHICH WAS RATHER SMALL BUT COMFORTABLY AND NEATLY LAID OUT TO GIVE US A GOOD NIGHT’S REST. THE SMALL SIZE OF THE CABIN DIDN’T REALLY BOTHER US TOO MUCH AS OUR WAKING HOURS WERE SPENT IN DIVING OR LOUNGING/RELAXING ON THE DECKS, WHICH FORTUNATELY WAS NOT CROWDED AT ALL SINCE THE LIVEABOARD HAS A MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF ONLY 16 PASSENGERS (DIVERS) – WHICH WAS A REALLY GOOD THING FOR US. ONE OF OUR MAIN REASONS FOR SELECTING THIS TRIP – BASED ON SEVERAL REVIEWS AND COMMENTS ON THE INTERNET – WAS TO SPOT MANTA RAY AND WHALE SHARK. BUT THIS WAS NOT TO BE. I GUESS THIS IS A MATTER OF CONSIDERABLE LUCK. HOWEVER, WHAT DISAPPOINTED US WAS THAT, EXCEPT FOR KOH TACHAI (WHERE WE HAD GOOD VISIBILITY AND SAW A WIDE VARIETY OF FISHES) AND A LUCKY SIGHTING OF A LARGE GROUP OF GREATER BARRACUDAS AT KOH BON PINNACLE, THE MARINE LIFE SIGHTINGS DURING OUR DIVES WERE FAR BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS. WE HAD HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT RICHELIEU ROCK AS BEING THE BEST DIVE SITE IN THAILAND. BUT LUCK DIDN’T FAVOUR US. THE CURRENTS THAT DAY (BEING JUST BEFORE FULL MOON) WAS SO STRONG AND VISIBILITY BEING NOT GOOD, WE JUST COULDN’T SEE WHAT RICHELIEU ROCK PERHAPS HAD TO OFFER. NEVERTHELESS, THE 9-10 DIVES OVER THE 4 DAYS, WITH EXPERT GUIDANCE FROM OUR INSTRUCTORS, HELPED US TO IMPROVE OUR DIVING SKILLS WHILE THE WARM AND EFFICIENT HOSPITALITY OF THE ENTIRE BIG BLUE DIVING CREW OF MV BLUE DOLPHIN MADE OUR DIVE TRIP CERTAINLY WORTHWHILE.
We went on a 4 day / 4 night trip in March 2024. Transfers, rooms, food, dive schedule, equipment, safety, guiding, dinghy ops…all excellent. Can’t fault anything. Good value for money too. We were guided by Alex Rhodes who also did the booking admin and made an awesome video for us, he was brilliant, as was the whole crew, and thank you to them all for a great trip. Alex was a bit crushed emotionally when there were none of his favourite gay pigeons at Donald Duck bay but he got over the disappointment quickly and didn’t let it spoil the trip. I won’t get into the diving but I’d last dived there nearly 20 yrs ago and it was good to see that it is still up there. An early morning dive at Christmas or North point in the Similans and one of the dives at Richelieu rock when the visibility was awesome were probably the highlights.
If you are considering booking a Thailand liveaboard, I’d highly recommend Big Blue of Khao Lak!The diving was better than expected! Absolutely loved Elephant Head Rock and especially Richelieu Rock! Amazing variety and quantities of life.Although this is a slightly smaller liveaboard the service was exemplary. Rooms were a bit small but immaculately clean.Steve Boots is the ultimate organizer and communicator. Transport to and from the boat was flawless and comfortable.Safety is a top priority on this vessel.Dive guide Alex is an excellent Divemaster and extremely helpful. Special mention to Jai as well. He was most informative and helpful.I was apprehensive about booking a 5Day liveaboard trip but my fears were quickly put to rest. We were able to accomplish 14 relaxing dives in only 3.5 days but didn’t feel rushed.Brian
I’ve been on a LOT of boats, and rarely have I found one this well run. We did their four day trip to the Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock. The boat is well maintained and comfortable, the food was phenomenal, and the staff is well-trained and professional. They’ve thought of and stocked everything you could imagine needing and more. Steve and his staff are really impressive with how flexible they can be to time sites when other boats are leaving and still maintain such a tightly run operation. And we very much loved their small ratios. We had the pleasure of diving with Steve and had so much fun. I’d highly recommend this operator!
Accommodation:The MV Blue Dolphin has been fully renovated since 2022 and sails in top condition through the Andaman Sea. The boat is clean, well-maintained, and attended to daily by the crew. For a liveaboard, our cabin was spacious, very well equipped, and had an en-suite bathroom. I didn’t miss a thing on any deck.Food:Wow. The dishes prepared by the kitchen team on this boat are fantastic. Four meals a day, all made with fresh ingredients, offering plenty of variety and simply delicious. If anyone still feels hungry between or after meals, there is a small snack bar. The selection of drinks is also complete, with plenty of drinking water, juices, cold drinks, and hot beverages available.Equipment:I was very satisfied with the wetsuit and fins I rented. I brought all other equipment with me. The rented equipment was in like-new, well-maintained condition. A big plus for the liveaboard trip: NITROX is available at no extra charge for certified divers on every dive.Communication:…is one of their many strengths. The team was extremely reliable in the preparation, during, and even after the trip. Safety is a top priority for everyone and plays a major role in the onboard communication. Respect for that.Diving Experience:The diving days are thoughtfully and variedly planned. Each dive begins with an informative briefing. I was in Pitt’s group, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her. Pitt, you are an exceptionally professional, skilled dive instructor with a true passion for the underwater world. Safety, communication, and diving finesse are central to your approach, while also keeping the experience fun for everyone. Thank you for the amazing dives.The highlight of our route for me was Richelieu Rock. Diving here is almost unbeatable in terms of underwater life density and simply fascinating.After each dive, a warm or cold face towel and a drink are offered—a wonderful service!Community Focus, Sustainability, and Environmental Protection:The crew comes from various countries and cultures, exemplifying respectful international collaboration. Onboard, there is a strong focus on minimizing waste, separating trash, using only ocean-friendly hygiene products, and working in closed-loop systems. The crew has plans to further optimize these systems. Underwater, there is also awareness of collecting waste, and the team regularly participates in sustainability-focused community programs. My wife and I had such a nice experience on the Big Blue Liveaboard. Safety and diving experience were excellent. The food was amazing. The entire team made our dive trip a highlight of our stay in Thailand.
I have just come back from a fabulous 4 day live aboard with Big Blue Diving. Alex and the rest of his team were, as you would expect, great divers, instructors and guides. They were also fabulous company and a lot of fun. The boat was well kitted out and my cabin was very comfortable (6’ 4” and had my own double cabin). The food was much better than I expected, how the chef managed to produce such fabulous food with good variety in a small kitchen is a testament to her skills. Final shout out to Pitt who was a fantastic guide and a lovely person. Thanks guys.
It’s our first live aboard and it’s so well organized that really exceeded my expectation. All the crew members were so cheerful and helpful, the food was better than some hotel buffet, each day we were fed 4 times with food plus unlimited supply of snacks, freshly brewed coffee, juice and so on. We get hot towels and dry towels after each dive. There are fish ID books and our DM will show us details on fish we saw. Worry free about equipments cos they always have spare. Well prepared and neatly organized. Overall they are very professional to make sure it’s chill and relaxed for all guests. Will come back again!
