  1. TRIP REPORT – MV EXPLORER FROM SEA DRAGON DIVE CENTERAfter my dive buddy and I decided to do another liveaboard trip, I was tasked with doing the research on destinations and trip length. Given that it was somewhat of a last-minute commitment, there were some limitations in availability in regions that neither of us had previously done. Thailand eventually topped the list. Our location on the west coast of Canada meant that a Thailand trip would involve long flights so more bang for the buck would be achieved by a ten-to-fourteen-day liveaboard itinerary. Although there were about three liveaboards that offered longer itineraries, only Sea Dragon’s MV Explorer had available space on their 13-day trip. This trip is actually a combination of their 5, 3 and 5 day trips but, in spite of that, there wasn’t a lot of duplication in dives site and those that were such as Richelieu Rock were very deserving of multiple visits. The one downside of the combined trips was that the final day of each segment only offer 2 dives before heading to a northern fishing village to offload departing guests and await the arrival of new ones. That did, however, give you the opportunity to off-gas and to take advantage of inexpensive beer. The Explorer is a 25 Meter (82 feet) wooden hulled ship that has been re-configured as a dive boat. The Sea Dragon Dive Centre offers this and the steel hulled Andaman as liveaboards and both reflect very good value relative to other liveaboard operators. They are, however, not as luxurious. According to staff, the Andaman caters to a younger crowd who don’t mind the mostly dorm style accommodations and 20 divers instead of the 16 max on the Explorer. The Explorer is slightly more expensive. The ship’s layout is quite functional as a dive platform. The dive deck is not really any tighter than other liveaboards I have been on, and crowding is minimized by only allowing one or two groups to gear up at a time. They divide guests into groups of four plus a guide. Sadly, all dives are from a RIB dingy since a high-ranking government official had a close call with a big boat upon surfacing a few years ago. He issued an edict that there would be no jumping off the big boats any longer. The boat staff are great in assisting divers on and off of the dingy. Each dive station has a milk crate for gear. There are several freshwater rinse hoses as well as a camera and computer rinse tank. The camera table is quite small and, since it is also used by the cooks, your set-up will be gently moved out of the way when they need it.The booking price does include a full set of dive gear. From a glance, the dive gear appeared to be relatively current, name brand items that are well maintained by the staff. Do be aware that the BCD’s are not weight integrated. The bonus for guests using the boat’s gear is that, at the end of their trips, they leave it to the crew to clean, dry and put away. If you bring your own gear (as we and a few divers did) you get a 10% discount off the price of the trip…but make sure you tell that to the diver centre staff when you are making the final payment. They do provide, at no charge, weight belts or weights for integrated BCD’s, dive computers (Zoop), torches for night dives and not particularly good SMB’s. Tanks are standard 12 Litre/Aluminum 80’s with DIN or Yoke available. Larger 15 Litre tanks are available. Guests gear up and head to the dingy when called and the boat crew will have already grabbed your fins to be put on when you are seated.Everyone is different in terms of their need for thermal protection and that will vary depending on the time of year. For me and for this trip in May, a 2-mil shorty was fine but be prepared for massive temperatures due to upswelling currents. There were times when we felt like we had gone from a hot tub to an ice bath and the computer recorded temperatures as high as 87 down to 73 degrees Fahrenheit. The dive deck also has three washrooms with toilet, sink and shower for a quick change between dives. The dive guide cabin is located on this deck as is the kitchen. Past the kitchen are 6 ensuite guest cabins that accommodate two guests either in twin or double configurations. They are very well air conditioned but, contrary to website claims, doesn’t really have ample storage space. That is a very good reason to pack far less clothing as this is, after all, a dive boat and not a fashion show. There are 220 Volt round pin power outlets for each bunk, good individual reading lights and a decent pillow and blanket. The pads on the bunks did make me appreciate the hotel mattress and the Thai massage after the trip. It is not an overly spacious cabin but not outrageously small either. All of these cabins have a good size sea view window that could be used for an evacuation should the principal exit be blocked. The combo toilet, sink and shower washroom is small but adequate. The provided towel is not overly plush, and you may wish to bring your own for topside or the beach. When booking you should be aware that these are the only cabins with ensuite washrooms. The two double cabins on the middle deck do not have ensuites and do need to utilize the washrooms on the dive deck….one deck down. The middle deck is the key area between dives. It has a considerable amount of seating for meals and socializing along with coolers/freezers for drinks and ice cream treats. Certain items such as beer, wine, coffee capsules and ice cream cost extra and are on an honor system for guests to record consumption. Prices are more than reasonable. All meals, buffet style, are served here and you will not go hungry. The middle deck has some charging availability and a very large supply of clips for drying clothing on the rails along each side of the front deck right to the bow. The two double cabins are on this deck. This deck is where all the pre-dive briefings take place and the daily dive schedule (subject to change due to weather/current) is posted. Each guest has an insulated drink container (with identifying letters) to borrow although many bring their own.I will say that my dive buddy and I, in addition to liking the great boat staff and dive guides, had a great connection to John Carter…. our trip supervisor and our dive guide for the two five-day segments. The upper deck would be considered a sundeck and has full length pads, hammocks and bean bag chairs and is partially covered as well as open for sunseekers. It does get hot up top.THE GOOD• Very good value…not the Hilton but above a Motel 6• Exceptionally delicious and plentiful food…both Thai and Western with consideration to vegetarians upon request. You would be hard pressed to find better on any boat. The routine was usually: briefing, dive, eat and surface interval. Repeat three and four times daily.• An incredibly hard working and delightful boat crew and dive guides. I have only done about 10 liveaboards and have had equal but never better crews and guides. We especially enjoyed John and Nat who were our guides.• We also had the pleasure of having two dive master’s in training who accompanied us on all dives and did guide some of them.• Small dive groups and a strategy to be woken up early so as to have a quick briefing and to get in the water earlier than the other big boats. Once we have done that, then the food and surface intervals for us and the other boats generally kept us well apart.• Extra charges for Nitrox were reasonable as were the treat and beverages that required payment.• Dive groups organized based on experience.• A nice assortment of guests from various ends of the earth.• Dive guides who cater to guest requests when it comes to finding marine life.• Dive boat supervisors who offered exceptional communication throughout the trips.• Some world class dive sites…especially Richelieu Rock that was full of massive schools of fish and lots of pelagic predators.• Sea Dragon Dive Center itself as they were reliable in advance communications and took care of things like arranging reasonably priced taxis to and from the dive center or recommending hotels. • The recommended tip level is more than reasonable and more than deserved.• A skilled and experienced Captain.THE NOT SO GOOD• Somewhat smallish sleeping quarters.• Cabin mattresses that were not overly kind to your back.• Smallish camera table compared to other boats• No Nitrox analyzers available to guests. Instead, a staff member would sample one tank and declare the percentage for everyone diving Nitrox. The boat should invest in a couple of analyzers for the guests to do their own testing to sign off. This is how nitrox divers were taught during their course.• The SMBs for the guests are pretty basic and do not include a reel. You may wish to bring your own.• Although they provide torches for night dives and the guide carries one back-up, any further fails would end the dive. Bring your own as a back-up.• Not exceptional visibility. Probably 50 feet tops. That may have been a product of the time of year.• The limit of two dives on the transition days.• Not seeing mantas or whale sharks. Certainly not the fault of the boat or the crew and likely the time of the year. We did make up for it by finding a large Bull Shark on one dive.OVERALLI would, without exception, recommend this boat and crew to friends looking to dive the Similans and the Andaman Sea. I doubt that you would improve on the food on any other boat and that the higher priced ones would only see a little more luxury and larger cabins.

  2. Best liveabord. I did my OW and OWD. Pi Tao, Ori & Pang were my instructors and were awesome. Did the first trip on MV Andaman 15th October. Flawless from beginning to now. Many amazing dives. A complete newbie and slow learner like me was put at complete ease and dealt with patiently. Food: Top notchDive sites are really good and the instructors take time to explain what to expect.

  3. We booked the four day four night MV Andaman live aboard. We received a warm and friendly welcome at the dive center and were quickly fitted with our diving gear for the next few days. Sea Dragon have a great library of books, so choose one for the trip, whilst stowing our backpacks (you really just need a day pack for this trip, with a few changes of T-shirts and pants). The boat was very clean and well maintained, the crew and guides were friendly, professional and welcoming. We got two dives at Richelieu Rock, which was absolutely amazing!Four days of amazing diving, lots of delicious food and some great late nights playing cards and shooting the breeze. The boat is run very professionally with safety always the top priority.Highly recommended for anybody, but for us it’s a really great adventure to share with our teenage children.Looking forward to coming back soon!

  4. We travelled as a family of 4 with 2 daughters 13and 8 years old in October at the very beginning of the season. We contacted Seadragon something like 6 months in advance and the booking process, communication and organisation of our package went smoothly.I especially liked the clear instruction on the itinerary of both course and trip, so I could arrange the rest of our holiday accordingly. Our teenager was sent the elearning material for the open water course and the offer to ask any question she might have during the process, which she used at some point. The dive center staff was able to help almost instantly. Thanks again for that! We went to the dive shop the day after our arrival at Khao Lak to complete the paper work, fit the gear, organise the last bits and pieces. The welcome at Seadragon was amazing. There was always some nice perfect English speaking person around to help with any query we had. They even had a wetsuit for our 8 year old to take onboard. Also she could spontaneously book a Bubblemaker program for the following day. The Bubble Maker with Jess turned out to be the absolute highlight of the entire trip for her. Jess is clearly a children‘s magnet and our daughter especially enjoyed to learn some real scuba skills besides the fun games in the pool. Our 13 year old had the best time finishing the Open Water Course. Her instructor Ori was able to build an instant trusting relationship with her so that she enjoyed every minute of it and we as parents felt safe to leave her in such good hands. We were also lucky enough to have Ori as our family dive guide for the following liveaboard. Our time on the 4D4N MV Andaman was wonderful. The dive sites were amazing – and we are somewhat spoiled-, the diving perfectly organised and the snorkelling times smoothly fitted into the whole process. The boat is perfectly equipped with anything we could have wished for: hammocks, bean bags, coffee, drinks, fresh fruit, dive boat buiscuits…The boat staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and at our side before we even realised that we could use some help. We almost believed there were 100 of them. The vegetarian food was fantastic and attracted some jealous looks of the meat eaters. Try the peanut sauce. So good! I missed the chance to find out the recipe. We felt absolutely safe on the entire trip which is also thanks to our supervisor Lucinda, who we could ask any question and get a clear answer, even the most random questions about the proper english names for winter clothing. Conclusion: Chose Seadragon if you want an amazing trip for your family – even with non-divers!

  5. I found this company very helpful as I had never been to Thailand before when I emailed them they were very helpful and quick to respond to any questions I had Booking was easy I went on MV explorer with the guides jonge(sorry if I spelt wrong) Philip, Jess and Marc all very helpful and friendly even though Philip did get us a bit lost haha but never mind we all make mistakes no harm done and it was only 1 dive didn’t ruin the experience Food was excellent how the cooks managed to cook the excellent food in the space they had and cook so much it was so appreciated read some bad reviews before writing this and do not agree don’t know what boat they were on but certainly not the boat I was on Crew couldn’t do enough for you brilliant deserve more praise Boat was clean my only complaint was the beds were a bit hard for me Will definitely recommend this company and will definitely be going back and using them again no hesitation The whole experience from start to finish was excellent from booking to doing the trip they even organised a taxi for me picking me up from airport to the dive centre and took me to the hotel after the livaboard Keep up the excellent work guys your great

  6. Our first Liveaboard experience ever and it was absolutely first class. We didn’t have an en-suite bathroom but this didn’t present a problem other than mild middle of the night inconvenience. We did an 8 night Liveaboard on the MV Explorer – there were 16 divers in total. We booked with PADI travel service (all was fine with this but I will book with Sea Dragon directly next time as their communication and organisation is excellent.)I can only reiterate previous positive comments from other reviews that the food was delicious and plentiful, (special diets aren’t a problem as long as the chefs know), the dive sites were beautiful and varied but most of all, the whole team on board from captain to crew and guides, were brilliant. As we were doing 8 nights, there was a changeover of guiding team after 5 nights and a new team took over with only 1 of the previous team remaining. Both teams were knowledgeable and professional and safety was the utmost consideration. Dive briefings without exception, were thorough with detailed map drawings and expected encounters with marine life given in detail. There are lots of reference books on board too and the guides complete a sheet after each dive to help with log book completion. I must highlight the hard work, expertise and lovely personality of Jung as our guide and teamLeader during the first 5 days. With the support of Pang, Am, Jess and Hugo, there was a real feeling of a team working together to give the best possible experience to all on board. It was great that four of the team were Thai speakers and Jung was excellent at using his many years of experience in supporting newer members of the team whilst giving them the opportunity to develop their own skills and knowledge. I would 100% recommend a Liveaboard with Sea Dragon and we will definitely ( like many others on board) will be back! Thank you.

  7. A great diving experienceWe booked a refresher course at the Sea dragons because we had our last dive a year ago. We finished the refresher course within 20 minutes, and we did the “usual” things what we need to know as a diver in open waters, so that we also could continue with our tour to the Similan Island. TransportationThe transportation from our hotel to the dive centre and from the dive centre to the pier was arranged by Sea Dragon. The boat was superb, it didn’t made an impression of a wrack. EquipmentSea dragon is using high quality equipment and also the famous diver brand “Mares” was represented among with other various brands.Dive instructorsThe dive instructors are really communicative and polite. They give you the time with descending and do not rush you. They are also open to have a chit chat with you and are full of energy. Many other diving schools may learn something from the Sea Dragon team. Also the dive teams aren’t so big which I really like. The quality is higher as the quantity.Food:We had some lovely cookies, coffee and tea on the ship, which was really enough for us. There also wasn’t any limit to have e.g. 1 cookie. The only negative point is that the cookies are so delicious that they are addicting! 🙂 Similan IslandThe tour to the Similan islands was good. The dive experience was the best. We saw colourful fishes and corals. It was worth every penny.

  8. I went on a diving trip with Sea Dragon in Khao Lak on November 10, 2024, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The whole trip was really well-organized, and the team was super professional, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable day.I dived with Mr. Arm, a Thai instructor who was fantastic. His English is great, and he’s super friendly with a real service mindset. He made the whole experience feel safe and fun, and he paid close attention to everyone in the group, making sure we were all comfortable and taken care of.We were on the MV Nangnuan, a spacious and comfortable boat with a really friendly crew. One of my favorite things was the sun deck, which had beanbags for lounging during the surface intervals—it was such a nice touch and made the whole day even more relaxing. The diving itself was both fun and safe, with Sea Dragon maintaining high safety standards throughout. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just starting out, they know how to make it a great experience.I can’t recommend Sea Dragon enough! Big thanks to Mr. Arm and the whole team for making this such a memorable dive trip.

  9. My wife and I booked Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses with Sea Dragon a couple of months in advance of our trip. From that point onwards everything was very clear, efficient and enjoyable! The instructors were consistently top-notch, keeping us informed and striking just the right balance between professionalism and good humour. The kit was all good quality and condition and we always had what we needed. Lunch, water and snacks were all taken care of so we could fully relax into the experience! The centre were also flexible when we wanted to tweak our plans or book on to additional dives at short notice which was very helpful.Overall a really great time and we’re grateful to the whole team. Special shout-out to Pang, Jack, Pi Tao and Hugo for getting us through the quals so brilliantly!

  10. Diving is an industry now and no where more so than in the beautiful waters around the Surin National Park but our 7 day liveaboard on the MV Andaman was “old school” – relaxed, comfortable, exciting and so much fun!My many thanks to Lucinda, Stephan and their team: including our guides Ton and Lidia; the fantastic cook who should have her own TV show cranking out 100 plus meals a day in a small, moving kitchen, every single one of the helpful boat /dive crew and the Captain and his resourceful engineering team.My buddy and I have been diving, on and off (due to family, mostly “off”) for over 30 years but our trip with Sea Dragon reminded me of the swashbuckling “good old days”. We had a great time sharing our dives, tall tales and lies and love of the ocean with like minded people of all ages and from all over the world. Sea Dragon exceeded my expectations 1000%. Can’t wait to do another one. Poppa misses you all!Gene

  11. Absolutely amazing Dive holiday. Great organisation, great place, really friendly team. Just felt like I was diving with a group of friends. The Diving was great the team at Me Dive who they work with were just as good and the boat crew at Kalmang were unbelievable and so much help and good fun.

  12. Amazing first dive experience for our kids (11 and 14yr old) thanks to the instructors at Sea Dragon. Marc was very clear with his instructions and also very patient with our 14yr old who was unable to properly equalise in the pool and hence extremely nervous when we got to the sea. Marc was so good to calm fears and set expectations that it happens to some, and we will just have to see how it goes. Turns out it was just nerves and both kids had an amazing time and first dive experience. Our 11 yr old just jumped in and had the best time. On their first dive they saw a turtle, cuttlefish, lionfish and many lovely fish. It was a pretty perfect first dive experience. Next year the kids want to go back to do their Open Water certification with Marc! My husband and I (both divers) snorkeled while the kids had their first dive and I must say that it was a lovely snorkeling spot as well. So relaxing given that there were only 10 of us on the boat, so I’d recommend going snorkeling with Sea Dragon as well.

  13. Ton and Marc guided me through the PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water certificates. The first day was spent training in the pool ensuring I learnt the basic and most important skills to dive safely, followed by trips to the Similan Islands with at least two members of staff (Divemaster and Instructor) with you at all times. Both Ton and Marc exhibit the most professional of attitudes to ensure that the highest standards of safety comes first, alongside making the dive fun and enjoyable. If Marc teaches you make sure to learn about all fish species in the Similan Islands.

  14. I did a 7 day liveaboard trip on the MV Andaman. I had a great time! Everything was run very smoothly by Lucinda, the boat supervisor. The boat crew were amazing as well. The level of service is consistently very high, especially considering the price. Special shout-out to Pi-Aoi who prepared delicious food all by herself every single day. The diving was great too. There is a strong focus on safety with thorough dive briefings for each site. There was a nice build up in the itinerary, saving the best for last, Richilieu Rock. We even got to do it six times, two more dives than originally planned. Special thank you to all the dive staff but especially to Pi Ton who was our dive guide throughout all 7 days. After the liveaboard I also did my EFR and Rescue course with Sea Dragon. Big thanks to Aidan, my instructor who was patient and who made it a fun experience. Thanks to Enya, Hugo and Crystal as well for being my “victims”. In short, would definitely recommend for both a liveaboard and courses.

  15. Nice Boat, very nice Crew, good Diveguides! The best Diveguide is for sure Tukta! We realy had a Great time.We will come back

  16. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you have dietary requirements or are traveling as a couple. Dietary requirements were completely ignored, and at one point, we had to beg just to get an egg to add to plain noodles since everything else contained meat. The cook didn’t understand what “pescetarian” meant and assumed it included chicken. We raised concerns both on the boat and later with the manager, but they were dismissive and unprofessional. The accommodations were disappointing as well—two thin, single polyester blankets for a double bed? After 16 months of traveling, we’ve never encountered such poor quality. The dive experience was rushed, with a “gear up quickly and go” mentality that felt chaotic and unlike any other dive resorts or liveaboards we’ve been to. Adding to the frustration, the boat crew made loud noise outside our window at midnight, disrupting our sleep. The dive sites were also underwhelming, with poor conditions and uninspiring locations. Others on the trip agreed with us. While challenging conditions are sometimes unavoidable, we’d rather revisit a good site than waste time looking at lifeless rocks. If you have dietary requirements or are traveling as a couple, avoid this place at all costs.
