  1. I’m an architecture and history buff.I recently went to this former palace of a Thai prince, Damrong Rajanupab, who’s celebrated here as a major historian, archeologist, and library-builder.The front gate off the main road was open, and there are signs in Thai announcing this place as a museum. Also, there’s the standard, lame, brown-and-white official historical sign in Thai and English.I walked up to the mansion, which was designed by a German, Karl Siegfried Dohring, and completed in 1911, and then walked around it and took some photos while looking for an entrance.IT’S A MUSEUM.In the back, two women were preparing some food. They glared at me and told me to go away. “No pictures!” and “Go!”So, I walked to an adjacent, affiliated library, and got similar treatment until one woman who seemed to be a manager came over and said she’d give me a tour if I came back in an hour.I did that, but she never appeared. As I was waiting for her in the library assembled by the prince, I sat down on the floor to get a good look at old books about Japan that were in a glass case. An agitated cleaning lady strangely rushed up to me and said “No! No!” I hadn’t touched a thing.THIS IS A LIBRARY BUILT BY ONE OF THAILAND’s MOST REVERED HISTORIANS.She tried to make me sit down at a table and just wait.I told her and a supervisor who showed up that this is a LIBRARY and I was looking at BOOKS.It was a bit like a Kafka tale. Really bad juju.Imagine going to a school and being told that no studying is allowed, or to a KFC that has no chicken.Anyway, I waited almost 40 minutes for the woman who’d promised to take me into the library, but it was clear that she was not coming and that the others were hoping I’d just surrender and exit stage-right.Finally, yet another supervisor arrived and told me that no foreigners are allowed. What? I told her that this is a MUSEUM and that no museum in the West or Japan or anywhere else I’ve been has a “no-foreigners” policy. She mumbled something about the place being private. In a word or two or four: stupefying and totally alienating.
