I have been pondering for long whether to write this review or not, simply because I felt a sense of loyalty toward a gym at which I trained for several weeks; and it is at this very place where I have made good friendships with other students like me, people who are amongst the nicest I have met in the Muay Thai community. But one has to stay objective and separate good memories from concrete facts.Sitsongpeenong is not what I expected it to be. I consider myself an intermediate level, that is somebody who does not need to be taught the very basics, but who still has plenty to learn. Instructions and constant corrections by the trainers are crucial for improvement and it it is for this very reason that I faced the expense of coming to Thailand and train here. During the first half of my stay, the gym was very quiet: almost no Thai fighter was present, having the most of them returned home for the national holidays; – this fact should have given the remaining students (the paying farangs) the opportunity to receive the undivided attention of the teachers. Instead, some of the instructors seemed to consider this period as much a holiday as the fighters who had left the camp; others, who had a different work ethic, were obviously overworked. Moonlit, the amazing head-coach of this gym, and Janjao, the younger coach, were burdened with holding pads for the students, supervising training, supervising clinching, instructing everybody and, upon the fighters’ return, hold pads and prepare them for upcoming fights. An impossible task. Meanwhile, the other trainers, and one in particular was also a lazy pad-holder, were sitting around doing nothing or playing on their phones. Naturally, the training took place following the usual pattern of any Thai gym (pad-work, bag-work, clinching, conditioning) but it did so with a lack of interest by some of the staff. With the exception of the pad-rounds, me and others were left on our own during most of the remaining time. There was often a sense of abandonment and lack of motivation among our Krus that I would have never expected at a gym with this reputation. Not only that: it is often said that Muay Thai gyms in Thailand have a long way to go in terms of women-friendliness; well not this gym, since one of the trainers seemed to enjoy training the few girls residing at the camp; he enjoyed it so much that he would dedicate all his attention to them, neglecting all the other male students. Two times a day, six times a week, some girls got their private classes without having paid for them, just because the teacher had such a good time playing around with them! Meanwhile we, the boys, were left on our own. I understand that being a Muay Thai trainer is a hard job and one needs distractions, but I cannot tolerate seeing people getting their private class twice a day every single day, while others, despite paying the same amount of money, being completely ignored. That is not what you would expect from the top-fighters gym Sitsongpeenong claims to be.Maybe it is my fault and I should have gone to a less prestigious gym; maybe I didn’t receive the attention I wanted because I wasn’t good enough: but it is on their website that they advertise this camp as “all levels welcome”.After staying at Sitsongpeenong I trained at three other gyms, two of which are Khunsuek and Yokkao respectively. Those are two gyms that the Muay Thai community would dismiss as tourist-oriented and low-quality. Well, it turns out the opposite: I have learnt more during three days of training at these gyms than during three weeks at Sitsongpeenong. Another aspect of concern is hygiene: the training area is really dirty. Often one of the trainers had his little dog come with him to class and considered it funny when his four-legged friend peed (or worse) around the bags where we worked out bare-footed.Not everything was bad: again, Moonlit, Janjao and the visiting trainer Dum were amazing; but they did what they could and were burdened with too many tasks. A few words about the rest of the facility: rooms were cleaned daily, food was excellent and the staff working downstairs (cleaning ladies, secretary, the woman cooking etc.) were all amazing people performing their duties with kindness and enthusiasm. The other students at the gym was great and we formed a cohesive group. My overall experience was great on a humane level, but it was disappointing in terms of training. I will end this long review with a little piece of advice: if you plan on training at Sitsongpeenong make sure to ask to be trained by either Moonlit, Janjao or Dum; ensure to be willing to fight, for you will definitely receive more attention if that is your plan; and finally: don’t book too long a stay: see if you like it first, if it appeals to you, and only then make your conscious decision.
I am in Dubai airport, waiting to go home, and reflecting on my two weeks experience at Sitsongpeenong Muay Thai gym in Bangkok. In terms of accommodation, it was perfect, with proper much needs air conditioning. Room was kept clean, and everywhere was spotless. We get two amazing meals a day. The training is hard, be prepared to have a long skipping session initially and then to go all out for 4 mins, with 30 secs break, four rounds on pads and four rounds on the bag. The pad work was superb; it was technical, working on timing, distancing, how well I am guarding, how relaxed I am. They encouraged this beautiful flow in you. On which day by day, you see yourself improving. After pad and bag work, there are callisthenics, punching with dumbbells, alternating kicks on the bag, and high repetition knees. It is not for the light-hearted, be well prepared in fitness, flexibility and enduring training in the heat. In the end, you will have improved immensely, and I am very excited to get back to my gym in the UK. The people are lovely. I was so respected, they treated me nicely, with great care and understanding when I was struggling at times. And, to see Sittichai Sitsongpeenong training is worth the journey. He is humble, friendly, looks fantastic in training and a real Muay Thai champion.
