Wat Phra That Sop Waen is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Amphoe Chiang Kham, Thailand
This temple is in a village call “Ban That Sop Waen” (2 km from Chiang Kham town centre), it’s beautiful & peaceful temple, and also there’s Thai Lue museum outside the temple (Thai Lue is one of the thai family tribes from Southern China, they had their own culture & language). Most of people in “Ban That Sop Waen” village are Thai Lue.Next to the temple, there’s a school “Anubarn Chiang Kham”, there’s the most beautiful Rain Tree in Thailand.
The first impression (apart from the ancient and enormous rain tree) is the height of the ceiling in the ordination hall. The Buddhas too are very fine and the rather naif and garish series of paintings of the life of the Buddha over the side windows are worth a glance. One other item – a pair of brilliant iridescent green fishes.
Highlights of the temple included an 800 year old Lanna style white pagoda with golden top that contains Buddha relics (hair and mandible). Moreover, our local guide led us into the memorial hall that contains 13 beautiful paintings created by local artists that depict history of Tai Lue people in Chiang Kham, their culture, daily life, and festivals. Many thanks to our local guide for gave us a wonderful explanation about messages in every paintings, some interesting details, and historical facts such as the great evacuation of Tai Lue people from Xishuangbanna (southern China) about 200 years ago and their journey until ended up at Chiang Kham.
