  1. Chiang Kham is one of those increasingly rare places in Thailand. Still just a little bit off the beaten track. I moved here almost two years ago and am so glad I did. Wat Nantaram is a fine example of the old Teak Temples which at one time would have been very common, but now the cost of upkeep has seen many of them disappear. The grounds of the temple are beautifully maintained and the main building houses a wide variety of artefacts. It is generally possible to organize a blessing from one of the monks. As of February 2015 there is a bit of work going on around the temple complex, but it doesn’t detract from your experience in visiting. So, if you do manage to get off that beaten track, do yourself a real favour and visit Chiang Kham and Wat Nantaram. Bring your camera!

  2. The temple is not big, and you can glance through the whole temple within 10 mins, but if you like to see the details, then it can take you 1 hour.

  3. When we look outside this attraction, we might thing it is not temple. Very amazing to come here. I took very long time around this temple. Absolutely amazing.

  4. Wat Nantaram is a beautiful Shan- style temple in the central Chiang Kham district of Phayao Province . The construction of this temple is still unknown. The architecture of this temple exhibits the classic Tai Tai – Shan – (from Myanmar) stlye roof. This temple is entirely constructed by using teak tree. Don’t miss this unexplored and unseen wonder of Chiang Kham , Phayao , Thailand.

  5. My husband and I visited the temple with our Thai friends. We went around the area while dressing like Lau people. The Lau outfits were renting from Darin shop near the temple. All of us enjoyed taking several pictures and felt we were the real Lau population. At same the token, the guide lady in the temple toured us around free of charge. One of our friend rented a Guest house near Darin shop in order to join us. Had too much fun and would love everyone visits the town and people.

  6. The architecture of this teak temple is unique in the Burmese style. Temple so well maintained and has a museum of curiosities and historical photographs of the local people and ceremonies.

  7. After the Burmese rule came to an end in the late 18th century, wealthy Burmese remained in the country involved in the teak trade (with a little help from the British). A number of temples in this style were built, the most notable, the largest, is Wat Sri Chum in Lampang. The Buddha images in the main hall here are classic Burmese, including an exquisite white jade example. In the subsidiary hall the Buddha images are Lanna in Chiang Saen style, evidence that there was a temple here well before the Burmese came or at least that these images were removed from Chiang Saen after the city was sacked in the 16th Century. This is an amazing piece of Thai history and there is a small museum at the rear as a bonus.

  8. If you only visit one temple in Chiang Kham this should be it. If the architecture is different to the usual Thai style it is because it is a Shan design and entirely built of dark weathered teak.So many nooks and crannies to explore and many of the Buddhas are Shan rather than Thai.

  9. Unique teak shan-style local temple with local museum attached. well worth a visit when you are visiting or passing through Chiang Kham

  10. This is an impressive centenarian Burmese-Tai Yai style teak temple with elegant cascade roofs. The principle Buddha statue in the temple was carved from a single teak tree lacquered in black and gold in Mandalay style, sitting on a wooden throne decorated with mosaic. According to our local guide, the wooden pattern around the throne contains 8 hidden cupids (which I couldn’t find only a single ; don’t lucky in love, isn’t it?). There is also a small museum that collects many old artifacts such as banknotes, tools, votive tablets, ancient manuscripts.Stunning place. Many nice spots to take photos. This is certainly one of must visit places in Chiang Kham.
