We were informed by a taxi driver on 17 November 2013 that there was an annual event, Loy Krathong (Festival of Light), held at Asiatique. Since he said it is a big event and worth the trip, so we went! We were regretted this decision. This place is accessible by subway then change to the complimentary ferry service provided by Asiatique but it was super crowded and long queue that evening which we decided to pay THB20 per person per trip to a private ferry provider rather than waiting for the free service. The restaurants and shopping here were quite expensive, nothing really special. As it was filled with people, it took us quite a long time to find a place to have dinner. We finally dined at Coffeol, 2 pastas, 1 sandwich, 2 cakes and 2 drinks cost us THB895. The ferris wheel cost THB250 per person which perhaps gave us some time and space away from the crowd. When it was time for us to go back, the ferry terminal was super packed with people and without a proper queue or system, we were not only sandwiched and also being pushed by the crowd instead of us walking on our own. This may be a nice place to visit but l don’t think we will come back again.
Huge crowd due to Loy Krathong, waited over 3-4 BTS (and a packed yellow boat) to get there. Loved the gentle way of placing things in the river. Also enjoyed the shopping at the warehouses.
The atmosphere in a beautiful corner decorated with various materials , especially the docks. Ferris wheel and a large main room is where everyone wants to take a photo.
The atmosphere is spirited. It is quite a big place with many variety of activities such as food, shopping…fun. The rows of food stalls in the middle seem attractive but the taste is horrid esp the thai cuisines. The restaurants at the pier appeared better but we will try them in our next visit. Free boat ride from pier off Taksin BTS
We headed here our last night in Bangkok and truthfully it seemed to take us FOREVER from our hotel in a taxi during rush hour but realistically it cost us about 200 Thai Baht ($5.75 US) you can’t get into a cab in most US cities for that little. In general this place is more upscale than most night markets, it has a great waterfront, arcade and while it’s overall a little pricier you can still bargain and get good deals. We all tried the Fish Massage and it was a BLAST… if you’re too ticklish its still worth standing and watching.
Asiatique provides a variety of interest to satisfy all, shopping market plus so many choices of inexpensive eating choices, with lots to amuse young kids too.
Loy Krathong – Floating a Basket:a familiar tunebreaking through the morning newsOh yes, it’s loy krathonghumming along the tuneah, I should rememberto put a thanksgiving basket onto the river for the goddess of wateras the candles flowmay the light in your heart continues to glow
This event is just something you have to witness. Yes, it’s crowded, but worth it. The lampoons, the parades, the flowerpieces, etc. you don’t see that every day 😉
