  1. PangKhon Sakura Mountain, Chiang Rai, ThailandThe internet says nothing or very little about Pangkon so I’ll try to share what I know about this place.Pangkon Village is still part of Mueang Chiangrai (subject for confirmation) and home to the Akha and Yaow hill tribes. Pangkon could be known best for its coffee. It can rival, or is even better than, the more famous Doi Wawee and Doi Chaang coffees (both the latter are also names of mountains). Unknown to many, it also grows Sakura trees which only blooms in winter. Unlike Baan Khun Chang in Chiangmai where I went last week which only has pink Sakuras, Pangkon has both pink and white flowers. The road up to Pangkon is concrete until you reach the mountainous part where potholes start to be common. A fourth of the 45 km. stretch will be traveled on dirt road which can be really slippery when raining and some parts aren’t paved at all. I posted some photos of the dirt road on the way up. We traveled by a three-wheel 125cc motorcycle and it’s endured it all.The best time to go is usually on the 10th or the second of week January. I think we came late, but we still saw some blossoming Sakuras amidst the mostly withering ones. I took pictures of the deciduous Sakura trees to show how beautiful it could’ve been if they were in full bloom.I wish I can see a fully bloomed Sakura forest next season, if not in Pangkhon then hopefully in Korea or Japan.
