Wat Nong Ta Khan (also known as Wat Ta Khan and Wat Tri Chonlatharam) is a sprawling temple complex near the village of Ta Khan, about 8 km from Rayong.In itself it is of not great architectural interest, with temples, stupas and shrines in various eclectic styles scattered around a large complex.But Wat Nong Ta Khan is highly popular with Buddhists in Rayong and it attracts a large following, especially on Buddhist holy days.The current abbot is the Ven. Wibulpharakit, who is highly respected for his education-oriented work, establishing the Wat Ta Khan School and developing the temple as a learning center for local youth. He is building a library and plans to develop a museum of local pottery and simple household items and utensils, which are rapidly being replaced by modern plastic gimrackery.We visited Wat Nong Ta Khan on Wisakha Bucha (20 May), which is the anniversary of the day the Lord Buddha was born, received enlightment and died.It was interesting to see the cultural interface between a Buddhist temple and its congregation. Everywhere around the temple grounds traders were selling fish, eels, crabs, frogs and even water snails for people to buy and to make merit by releasing in the Ang River, which runs through the temple grounds. Or you could buy caged wild birds to release into the trees and forest around the temple.It was all very commercial, and I could not help but wonder that if people made merit by buying these creatures to release them back into the wild, would not the vendors have demerits for having captured and caged them in the first place?
