Petchaburi sees few tourists which is sad as it is a nice old town and this temple is a highlight. A great place to wander and relax. The main “bot” has some very old murals, lovely but in need of restoration. Other points of interest are the tiny wooden library over the pond (yes, it looks like an outside toilet)! Also the 6 fingered Buddha image at the back of the bot (inside)And, by the way, if a door is closed in the main temple area just knock gently and try to open it (except for the monks’ dormitories of course). The monks are very friendly and helpful.
On first impressions it does not look very interesting – more a complex for monks but you need to walk around and enter the main temple where there are a lot of Buddha icons, statues etc, faded wall paintings and a monk who was chatting to some local students. One handed me a short guide to the temple written in English. Outside is a pond with wooden dragon figures. It was very interesting although not on a grand scale. Definitely worth a visit but do not expect anything resembling the Grand Palace of Bangkok.
The greatness and splendor . In terms of art history, archeology, historic monuments and murals inside the temple and hall of Ayutthaya.
We visited Phetchaburi immediately after some quite serious flooding and it was difficult to gain access to certain parts of this temple as carpets were being laid out to dry. However, the parts that we could see were lovely and there was an unusual wooden structure above the pond, the likes of which we did not see elsewhere in Phetchaburi. We did a self guided walking tour of Phetchaburi and this is one of the many temples that we visited – it’s only a few minutes walk from the more famous Wat Kamphaeng Laeng for example – and opposite Wat Borum.
This is an atmospheric old temple with a lot to see. When we were there, a stray and friendly dog oddly guided us by leading and following us to the different buildings and waited patiently while we looked at each part. We loved this temple.
Old wooden temple buildings, 300-year old murals, a big pond with a small, wooden library building for the holy books, feeding the fish, all-in-all an interesting temple complex to visit. A bilingual brochure is available for free.
Love the old red pavilion it looked unique and very beautiful The original murals in the church so beautiful.
This is another of Phetburi’s alluring historic wats, with a variety of treasures on offer. There is a rustic, timber manuscript library set above a pond. There are a number of small, decorated chedis to ogle. There is an attractive vihaan with faded murals and gold stencilling on its pillars. Finally, there is a large, wooden structure in a vernacular style which has been beautifully restored.
No glittery glass tiles decorating the roofline here, just plain and elegant wood. A unique temple complex, less ostentatious than the current trends. Beautiful, though mostly degraded, murals in the main vihara. When I was there scaffolding was up on 2 walls – perhaps a sign that they will be conserving the murals???
Best example of Thai architectural style with outstanding artifacts inside the buildings. The buddha images are also welknown and venerated by the buddhists.
