Gems Market is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Si Chan Road and Soi Kra Chang Wat Mai Subdistrict, 22000, Thailand
Chantaburi Province, about 270 km south east of Bangkok, has been since the 15th century a major center for the mining and trading of gemstones, particularly rubies and sapphires, and semi-precious stones.Due to unlicensed and uncontrolled mining, Chantaburi no longer mines so many gems itself, but relies on imports from neighbouring Cambodia and Myanmar. But that has not impacted its significance in the gem trade, with people from all over Thailand, Asia and other tourists heading to Chantaburi to see if they can pick a money-maker or something to win the heart of their beloved. The center of all this is a narrow street in Old Chantaburi Town, with centuries old teak-wood houses still standing between modern air-conditioned jewelers’ shops. It is variously called Thanom (which means street) Srichan, Sichan, Si Chan, or even “Gems Street” as a large sign at the entrance to the street proclaims. It is interesting that even though there are now many air-conditioned high-security jewelry shops, many traders still come along with a small trestle table and a couple chairs, and set out their stones for the inspection of potential buyers.Even if you are not looking to buy gemstones, a walk along Thanom Srichan (Gen Street) is a walk down hundreds of years of history of this old town.
Chanthaburi is a gem centre with Chinese coming to buy and Pakistani, African and a collection of other nationalities come to sell.
It’s a nice street, nothing in particular, but when jewelry shops are opened it’s packed with all sorts of people, seller, buyers from all over the world. Be careful if you want to buy something, there are cheaters. It’s better to visit on Sat and Sun starting after 10 am and till 3 pm when all activity goes on. If visited during week days it’s just an ordinary road with few shops opened and very few people. By the way it’s very close to the old town just across the bridge over the river.
This used to be THE place to get your gems in Chanthaburi. Unfortunately, globalisation has taken away a lot of business from Chanthaburi, hence what you see can be obtained in Bangkok or some convenient part of the world. Prices are competitive, even though quality may differ from seller to seller. However, as a tourist spot, still a good place to walkabout and learn to reject the fierce selling tactics. Learn to say no. Good for culture-seekers.

Known as Tlad Ploy, I visited the Chanthaburi gem market as part of my research for writing the Gemstone Detective travel guide. The market comes alive at the weekend, it’s quite a bit quieter during the week. For a gem enthusiast, the gem market is really worth a look, even if looking is all you do. The market is spread over a few streets (so wear comfortable shoes), as well as there is one large building where around 100 gem dealers and traders position themselves – sitting at desks. If you’re intending to buy (take credit card as well as cash), you’ll need to know a little bit about how it works – and that’s the purpose of my book – take it with you, as well as your own tools to look at gems.
This is a place for gemstone business. A gem enthusiastic would definitely enjoy being here on the weekend when the Chanthaburi market is crowded with sellers and buyers from all part of the world.
Many years ago, Chanthaburi may have been the center for gems trading. However as tourists are waning and gems not in the spotlight as in yester-years, this is becoming a bit of a provincial history lesson. There are still some forms of gems trading going on, but really unlike before when it was rampant retail. But do give it a visit if you like gems or if you have an expansive budget to afford such commodities. Otherwise, just give it a miss and look elsewhere for tourist sights and sounds.
Unless you are looking to trade some gems, I really don’t see any point of coming here. Seeing a few lads sitting at tables looking at doing business is about as much fun looking at paint dry
