Phu Khieo Wildlife Reserve is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Tambon Huai Yang, Thailand
This attraction is in fact a wildlife sanctuary and comprises a vast area of mainly dense forest land. It is situated on the western edge of Issan in the North East of Thailand. To reach it head west from Khon Kaen City on route 12 via Chum Phae to Khon San (just over 100kms) where you turn left at traffic lights onto route 2055 signposted Chulaphon Dam. Drive until you join a short section of dual carriageway where route 2055 bears left and the signposted road to Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary and Chulaphon Dam keeps straight ahead (route 2366). This road goes through very pleasant scenic rural countryside up into the hills. You will eventually see a large sign on your left advertising the Sanctuary. Keep going until you reach its entrance on your left with a scenic viewpoint opposite on the right (also worth a look). There are several buildings including a gatehouse into the forest. I had to pay 200 baht for myself and my car. You get a large pass in exchange for your passport or ID card which is retained until you exit. There is then a 24kms drive along a trail through dense forest crossing rivers and passing two lakes to reach the Sanctuary’s headquarters . It is “hit or miss” whether you spot large animals but for me it was the excitement of possibly seeing some from the trail like several herds of deer I saw in clearings. Signposts warn of elephants but I did not see any however their presence was indicated by piles of dung along the roadside. Plenty of butterflies. Stop for a few minutes at the first major bridge to look down into the river valley and admire the view. Further on you will see a memorial to 3 Park Officers who were killed by Communist terrorists in 1976. By the time I reached the HQ complex torrential rain was falling so I was not able to fully explore the site however there are guest houses you can rent. I then made the 24 km return journey to the entrance. Drivers please note the trail varies in width, age and surface quality with the older sections being rather rough with some serious potholes. Make certain you have plenty of gasoline in your tank especially you motorcyclists. The Sanctuary is open from 06:00 to 16:00 and I suggest a visit starting early in the morning might enable you to see more of the wildlife when they emerge to eat and drink. It is very difficult and time consuming to reach Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary by public transport but is not impossible as the nearby Chulaphon Dam and Hydro-Electricity Power Plant is a destination. I recommend a visit to this Sanctuary especially if you enjoy the sense of being on safari. It could become very busy during Thai public holidays.
