This festival is worth seeing but it falls a bit short of expectations. The outfits and masks are wonderful and we really enjoyed seeing the parade around the Wat, quite lovely. However, be warned, there lots and lots of drunk people around and as the day progressed the feeling got more and more intimidating and this feeling got even worse when the police started confiscating glasses and bottles because a huge drunken brawl the night before. Definitely worth seeing but get there early and leave mid afternoon.
Phi Ta Khon Festival is 2 days of dance, music and colourful parades. The first day had a colourful parade in the morning and in the afternoon we watched dance troupes from other Asean countries. In the evening there was live music (primarily for young people) on the main stage and more traditional entertainment (dance and song) on the food court stage. The second day we watched the main parade with literally thousands of people taking part. The costumes and masks were amazing! So colourful and lively! Well worth a visit. A unique experience.
This festival is so much fun and the costumes unique to this festival in Loei Province. Dan Sai is growing fast with lots of new businesses. The festival parade is an experience you won’t forget from huge phallic symbols, to the fantastic intricate masks. The forest people, the kids dancing groups, etc. all make a wonderful exciting experience. The only downside, is it can be excruciatingly hot, and of course very crowded. A great event for the whole family.

We spent 2 days experiencing all of the amazing festivities of the Phi Ta Khon. Lots of incredible Phi costumes and wild dancers! High energy Thai music but extremely LOUD!!! I am glad that I had ear plugs in my bag to protect myself from the extreme decibel levels! The parade was very long too, lasting several hours with hundreds of dancers and Thai performers.
