  1. If you are most elevated places in Mukdahan and look around, you will see the big white Buddha on the mountaintop just outside the city proper.to the south.Firstly, the views over the Mekong River and the twin cities are worth the free admission price alone.Secondly, the Big White Buddha and the super long dragon are rather fascinating. The tail on the dragon is a work of constructive creativity. Photo opportunities abound. The downsides are that the place is on the hit list for school buses so expect 100’s of pretty well-behaved kids mingling around. They all want to tie red ribbons on anything they can reach in dragon territory. Also being out of the city a little you will need a car or tuk-tuk to get there. We made arrangements with the tuk-tuk driver to call him when we were ready to leave.Besides the genuine Buddhist pieces, there are kitschy sculptures like wooden logs made from concrete. It seems a cross between a theme park and a genuine Buddhist site. Apparently, there is a 3D photo centre that kids would love.

  2. You are now made to park at the base of the mountain and take a songtaow (truck with sitting benches) to the top, whereas in the past one could drive all the way up. Finding a place to park can be challenging on weekends/holidays. The food stalls at the now unused parking lot on top are gone, or were gone when I was there, at least. The mountain top, particularly the giant Buddha, offers good views of Mukdahan Town, the Mekong and Laos, and surrounding areas of Mukdahan Province. This is a nice place for a family to chill for an afternoon, nothing special, just pleasant and relaxing, and good for a few photos. If there were an entrance fee, I’d probably skip it. I don’t mind going there, but if I never go there again, I wouldn’t mind that either.

  3. Last time we were here (~2 years ago) we were able to drive all the way up to the outlook level. That is now no longer the case. You have to park your car now and get hauled up there on the back of a small pickup truck. Uncomfortable and inconvenient! Also, there are now busloads of tourists. It’s just no longer an enjoyable place to visit, and that is very disappointing.

  4. Impressive sights and views. I did not see another falang among the holiday crowds which says a lot for the popularity of the place to locals. Being a Buddha holy place entry is free but you can leave donations if you wish.

  5. I’ve been here several times in the last 5 years. The grounds have been improved since last visit. The new naga is impressive, but the footing to get to it is a bit tricky. The buddha is still under construction. The park is well worth a stop for the views, and picture taking. We arrived early, and expected to park and take the songthaw to the top, but we’re told to drive our car up, and park.

  6. Lovely temple complex on the mountain close to town. It has amazing views of the surrounding towns and countryside. We loved the Naga’s area! The big Buddha was nice on the outside but as it’s still under construction, there really isn’t anything inside. The Buddha does however have an observation deck four flights up. There is an elevator or plenty of stairs to choose from. You park at the base of the mountain and take a donation based baht bus to the top. There are food vendors and small shops at the parking lot

  7. I am not a Buddhist so found people making a pilgrimage to a new religious site that almost looks like Disneyland strange. But the distant view from the huge Buddha on the mountain is spectacular and observing the faithful make “good merit” to the colorful naga was interesting. There are a couple decent outdoor restaurants next to the parking area selling grilled chicken, fish and noodle dishes.,

  8. Very nice temple this with a lovely care coffee shop. Well worth a visit. We tied our red ribbon on the trees for luck etc.

  9. I was flying into Savannaketh, Laos, when I saw the Buddha on a hilltop, this intrigued me that a visit is a must !It is located in Mukdahan, Thailand, so we have to cross over to visit it.It is a beautiful Royal Temple as seen by the Seal on the base of the Buddha, there is also an interesting Naga shrine by the hill.Wear a hat and sunscreen, it get very hot there !

  10. The temple is on the hill. We were here in the morning, so we were able to drive our car uphill to the temple (No cars allowed after 08:30 due to the narrow and steep road. Visitors have to park their car at the foot of the hill and take local truck taxi to the temple). Highlights of the temple included1. Replica of the Buddha’s footprint.2. An outstanding 122 metres long and 20 metres high greenish-blue Naga statue. We also walked through the 7 loops formed by twisted body of the Naga and wrote our names on a piece of red cloth for auspiciousness, according to local belief.3. A remarkable 40 metres wide and 60 metres high white Buddha statue on the top of the hill. Here, visitor can also see a panoramic view of Mukdahan city, Mekong river, and Laos country. After visited all attractions, we took a rest and enjoyed good beverages at “Porjai cafe”, a lovely cafe in a Japanese style garden. Recommend!
