I travelled with 2 others from Koh Samui to Phuket last month as it was the cheaper option to flying (less than $30aud ea for ferry & bus, over $200 ea flight one way). All up the journey from Samui would take around 7 hours to get to Phuket. The hotel staff arranged everything the day before, a van picked us up at 6am from our hotel near Fisherman’s Village took us to Nathon Pier we boarded the ferry 8am sharp, it wasnt too crowded and the seats were comfortable enough, then went to Donsak pier where there were several coach buses waiting we jumped on the one with a man holding a Phuket sign. Our luggage was all taken packed on the bus, the seats were alot more comfortable ans spacious and 2 of us sat together while the 3rd person had seats to herself. The trip was fine except for no aircon… it was very humid and sticky but we tolerated it. We had 1 pit stop where there was fresh food available, toilets and the driver gave us the option to wait for another bus with a/c or continue on journey with hot sauna on wheels bus…. we voted to wait for next bus… half an hour went by other tour buses came and left we were all still waiting for the new bus, we finally asked how much longer will it be? driver responded another hour so we all piled back on bus and decided lets just keep going. Hours later we were told to get off the bus and wait on side of road someone else will take us in smaller groups to airport or Lomprayah depot to go Phuket. We waited 20 minutes for our van to go depot. Boarded another van for 150THB to take us to Phuket from there, around 1.5 hours later we got to our hotel. By this point it was around 6pm. We left Samui at 8am! While it did take a longer time than expected it was a nice way to see the mainland. We got to where we needed to go, kept an open mind and our luggage was all in tact…
I retired in Thailand 4 years ago, and frequently travel. I would just like to remind people in writing reviews that you should not expect the same level of efficiency that you have in the West. Just doesn’t work that way. Lomprayah does it better than most, which is why I gave them 5 stars. It’s relative. Specific to my review…a very popular Lomprayah route is the one that leaves Samui at 0800 each day bound for Surat Thani, and then distant points, one being the Surat Thani airport. On that route, Lomprayah online schedule says you will arrive at the airport at 1030, but in some places on the island – like in hotels – the schedule will say 1000. At the pier, they will tell you it will be anywhere between 1030 and 1100 to the airport. Today, we arrived at 1105 at the airport. So just plan accordingly. Also, you don’t have to build too much of a time buffer – the airport is small, and you get through security extremely quickly. Air Asia is also typically 15 or so minutes late (I fly them a couple of times per month).
Travelled with this company many times around Thailand. Our route one day was from Phi Phi to Koh Tao via Krabi and Surat Thani. When we reached Surat Thani we thought we only had a 1/2hr boat journey left, what we werent told was that we had to travel to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and then to Koh Tao which took an additional 4 hours. The majority of the trip was fine, however after hearing other horror stories about boats, we were anxious as it was. From Koh Samui to Koh Tao, we had the most horrific experience on the boat ever, it was rocking so much that everyone was getting sick, the workers on board had little english and thought it was funny that everyone was so upset. I asked one worker was it normal to be so rocky and she said it was first day of monsoon weather, what I cannot understand is how these boats are allowed travel in such horrific conditions. It would never happen in the western world, all these boat operators see is money and therefore we are threw around like a sack of potatoes on a boat causing awful distress to all. Worst experience of all our lives.Lomprayah may be the quickest ferry but they are definitely the rockiest. We travelled from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui in a different day and whilst this boat was quick, we were left on the boat longer than the boat took to get to the island as they were unloading suitcases along the pier. Very unsafe which led to one mans bag falling into the sea. We were told to disembark the boat and out rucksacks would be outside, we were ushered out of the boat with a hand gesture and grunt. When we got outside we waited a long time and no sign of the boat. As we waited we asked the man taking off the bags what about the rucksacks, he said down there down there and pointed down the pier, bags weren’t there. Therefore we decided to take matters into our own hands and go back onto the boat and retrieve the bag ourselves.Shocking service and a serious lack of communication.Avoid ‘rocky’ lomprayah!.
We went with Lompraya from Surat thani Airport to Koh Tao. The guy at the airport counter was not friendly at all. We felt like one of thousand customers and he was not interested at all. He didn’t explain we had to change the ticket from 12goasia at the peer for boattickets, so when we wanted to board we had to go back in a hurry to the office to change it. Also the bus was chaotic. He told us we had to go outside at 14.20 but at 13.40 someone said we had to go on the bus. No chances to go to the toilet anymore. At the peer no one told us what to do. They dropped us leaving everyone with questions. At the ferry it was total chaos with the luggage. The staff was friendly but didn’t explain that the they would take care of the luggage by arriving at the next peer so everyone was grabbing their backpacks. We were afraid that someone else would have ours on the wrong island. Unfortunately we also had bad weather at the end of the trip and everone got seesick, but that’s not their fault. For us it was the first time but also the last time with Lompraya. They should instruct their staff to be more friendly en to give more information to customers.
Lady is friendly enough however got talked into a bus and boat ride to Auyathaya, was so looking forward to the experience as it sounded fantastic, however the guide did not shut up, she must have talked in monotone thai/english for the first 2hrs then rambled on and on periodically, we then arrived at the temples and only had about 20 to 30 minutes looking around each of them which was so not enough time. The first stop 46acres and no time to enjoy. The next journey we had already booked unfortunately was from Bangkok to Koh Tao with Lomprayah. We were going to fly again but the lady advised was better on boat. She said just transfer to bus and then go on ferry which we thought was a short bus trip then a boat down the coast. Not as explained the nightmare continues and becomes one of the worst bus rides that lasted 6hrs from Bangkok to Chumphon with no stops on uncomfortable seats, stuck down the bottom with no head room near one of the most unsanitary toilets plus rude arrogant backpackers. The journey was not as explained properly and the flight we had done many times before is a much better option. Quite annoyed and would not use this service again!
The air condition‘s water dropped to us all time the journey. Look at the pictures. The departure delayed. Price value in proportion is not good.
I will simply never use this company again. On the minivan journey from Tapee Pier in Surat to Donsak, the driver kept sleeping and had to be awoken and asked to stop the van for a while so that he could hopefully wake up a bit more before continuing. Incredibly dangerous and irresponsible. The boat ride itself was the absolute worst ride I have ever taken. My girlfriend, her sister and half the boat threw up multiple times. Such a bumpy ride, swaying wildly all over the place. All in all, we paid more money than the other ferries to almost get killed and arrive in Samui 3 hours late. Unbelievable. Lesson learned!
good Catamaran and good service and good staff . We traveled from Bangkok to Koh Tao with my friends. We were convinienced with VIP bus from Khao san road bangkok and connect Catamaran at Thungmakham noi pier chumporn by Big Catamaran. We were happy and feel safty with their services. We will use again in the next time.
If I couldn’t give a star, I would! When we wanted to take the ferry at 11 o’clock from Koh Phangan to Surat Thani was told that the boat is broken and we were referred to another company. However, the lady at the Lomprayah counter said we should get to Domsak on time at 11am with this ferry and from there take the shuttle bus to Surat Thani Airport so we could catch our flight at 4:15pm. When we then left much too late and arrived much too late in Domsak, we wanted to take the shuttle as quickly as possible to the airport – but nothing there – the bus driver put after 20 minutes a break with 15 minutes at a gas station, which lasted 40 minutes, however. After that, he drove through the entire city center in a traffic jam to unload passengers in the city and at the train station, although it was said that he was going directly to the airport. Instead of as planned at 15.00 clock at the airport, we were at 17.00 clock at the airport – we missed our flight and for the newly booked flight it was already stressful. Refund there is of course none… Flies from Koh Phangan rather via Koh Samui to Bangkok – it is a bit more expensive but needs much less nerves!!!!
I don’t believe lomprayah time tables represent accurate description of arrivals. I would add anothwr hour. Our trip from koh phangan should start at 11 am and end at 14.00 pm. The weather was excellent, traffic hardly any, it was sunday. We arrived 50 minutes late. The travel time between the islands is not 30 minutes. It is at least 50 minutes. Unloadingband loading times are long. Boat is full and very slow. Almost as slow as seatran. This is not lomprayah i used to know. There is almostbno diffwrence in time between raja ferry and lomprayah. There is according to timetable, but timetables are fake. Has anybody arrived on time to surat thani lately? I think they are saving fuel, overloading boats… thisi os no speed boat anymore. Time tables look more attracite, but i think they are fake.
