Peranakan Phuket Museum is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 124/1 Moo 1, Thepkasattri Road Sri Sunthorn, 83110, Thailand
I visited this place with friends. It was an amazing experience because this museum is not a typical one. You can learn many thing about Phuketian and its cultures. I especially like the local costume. One other good point is a restaurant which is located in the same building. The food is excellent. I would definitely return to this place.
It must be said that this museum has been very well thought-out. You get a very clear picture of what the Peranakan culture (Hokkien-Malay) in Phuket is all about. But even if you’re not interested in history, there’s more than one reason to visit this plaza – the restaurant is excellent and the modern-designed café offers one of the best treats and ice-cream in town. The museum section provides an insight into the Peranakan culture, whose people have inhabited Phuket since hundreds of years ago. There are interactive displays, personal artifacts handed down from older generations, building models demonstrating the Chino-Portuguese architectural style, family life, garments, accessories, ceremonial items, kitchen, and just other everyday items showing their way of life. Without the museum, much of this would have been lost. The shops:- a garment and costume shop, for purchase or rental, – a large jewelry shop that also features 17k gold and Peranakan pieces (e.g. Pintung, or star, necklace), – a hotel-quality restaurant offering Thai, Phuket, Peranakan, fusion dishes,- a modern café, possibly best in town for ambience and shakes/dessert quality (try the butterfly pea coconut ice-cream and the signature brownie-cream ice-cream).Overall I’m glad to have visited and will give a high recommendation to anyone visiting Phuket.
really small museum located in the old town. record the straits chinese history in phuket. formerly is a chinese school.
We stopped by for a walk-thru and realised we could have bought a musuem pass and visited many museums as more cost effective.Ha a smallish collection of interesting exhibits. Worth visting as part of the museum pass, not as a standalone viist.
Interesting to learn about the culture and heritage of Thai Peranakan culture, there is indeed similarity in the way of life of the Thai peranakans and other Peranakan cultures in Penang, Malacca and even Singapore. The musuem has done well to incorporate the use of technology to showcase in their exhibits: there was a virtual pond which encourage users to interact by jumping in, and even a virtual bicycle tour! Exhibits were also interest, especially the gold jewellery on display, which showcased much of the intricate craftmanship of the Peranakans. There was also a photo opportunity which enabled visitors to get dressed in the traditional Peranakan wear. This came with a a free photo developed into a nice batik frame as well as the chance to visit the museum while dressed in the outfit. Certainly interesting experience!Special mention to their staff, Jackie, who was my guide for the day. He took special care in explaining to me about the various displays and exhibits in the museum.
The museum provide the knowledge of the culture, tradition and living of the Phuket people. There is English speaking guide lead you through the museum with a brilliant explanation. You can try traditional dress and taking picture at the studio with cost. There is restaurant inside the museum with a great taste of Southern food menu. It is worth to visit. If you are foreigner, I recommend you to buy Muse Pass which cost Baht299.-(as of July 2018). You can use the pass to visit 63 museums and learning center all over Thailand. The Pass is valid for one year from the issue date and can use only once for each museum and learning center. It will help you save cost a lot.
It is a very small museum. Nothing interesting Inside there is a mini cafe have delicious green tea.
