Ao Muong is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Ao Mung is the place to be. I’ve discovered this bay under water, but for sure it is a nice place to stay. Quit with a restaurant and a bar. So you will have a great day.
There are two ways to get to Aow Muang or Ao Muong or Mango Bay. The first is the way sensible people do it and that is to go by boat. The second is for the more adventurous (foolhardy?) who go tandem on their 125cc scooter. It seems like a good idea at the start and if you’ve been in Koh Tao a couple of days you would be used to some steep roads but let me tell you these take it to a new level. Much of the road is gravel and has been quite extensively washed out so requires careful navigation at slow speed. From the top of the hill its only about 2-3kms to the parking spot above the bay but it seems longer – adrenaline does that to you! Surprisingly there are very well made steps down to the Mango Bay Resort – 394 of them in fact! More later. There is a guy at the top of the stairs who relieves you of 200baht for the pleasure of going there. When you get to the bay it is lovely. There’s an easy entry to the water by the resort jetty and the snorkelling is good. Very clear water. Our problems started when we walked back up to the bike. I mentioned the 394 stairs. On a hot humid day they are draining. When we got back to the bike we found it had a flat tyre and there’s no phone service. Back down the 394 stairs to the resort to phone our resort to get them to send a taxi to rescue us which they did. This of course required going back up the 394 stairs plus a walk up the road as the taxi driver didn’t want to go all the way in due the condition of the road – this in a 4*4 Hilux mind you. We have talked to a couple of other people who have riden into Mango Bay and punctures seem to be a regular occurrence. Its interesting to learn that at the top of the hill there is a guy who fixes punctures for 400baht as opposed to the 200baht in town. Sounds like a good business … wait a minute…..? Just saying. If you want to go to Mango Bay go by boat!
ao muong is the most isolated beach on koh tao and only reachable by boat. there exist a trail also, but everyone told us that it is very dangerous to take the trail with the motocicle. so we decided to rent a longtail boat to go there. there is located a resort and a restaurant…the restaurant is closed and no one knew when it will open again. the beach is small, the water crystal clear and the surrounding without question a beautiful place for snorkeling and diving, but ao muong is not the place to spend the whole holiday, because it is very lonely there when all the day visitors are gone. it is better to stay arround the cape near sairee or mae nam beach and take a trip with the boat to this hidden place. we can recomment ao muong only for a short visit…maybe for 2 or 3 hours…after that time everything is explored and it´s getting boring.
found this place by accident and the sea life was just amazing , wasnt too impressed with all the boats and theri fumes etc ut its worth a visit if you like to snorkle
Certainly recommend visiting this area.Short boat trip from Sairee beach or you will stop on the way if you do a snorkelling trip.The sand / Beach itself is strewn with dead pieces of Coral so barefoot approach to the water is very uncomfortable to say the least. The bonus is that there are lots and lots of fishes to see and the snorkelling is great. Just DONT put your feet down on the bottom – It will hurt.There is a café / snack bar and WC ( But very expensive by Koh Tao standards ( bring your own snacks and drinks)
I think Mango bay has great snorkeling. I wish trip advisor would merge the two attractions. Ao means “Bay” in Thai. Muong means “Mango” in Thai.
I am staying at the Au Muong Resort and just wanted to warn tourists about the jellyfish here. My husband and I went out snorkelling on the 27/7/18 and unfortunately there are far too many little, stingy jellyfish in the water to enjoy the experience. They are everywhere, the tourist boats are still visiting, full of people wanting to snorkel, but they soon retreat from the water and leave.I was led to believe that Thai beaches where supposed to have a sting / vinegar station, with vinegar available to dilute stings and emergency numbers and a purple flag visible, if there are potential dangers in the water. Au Muong does not have either.The beach isn’t that picturesque at the moment, the resort appears to be extending and they don’t seem to be able to tidy up sufficiently or efficiently.The jellyfish are not deadly, but they do sting and can cause a skin reaction and potentially a more serious adverse reaction (anaphylaxis) if you were very unlucky. The tour operators should be checking the bays and informing people before they book their trips, and especially before going in the water!I have not been to any other bays yet, but I will post a review if I see any hazards.My husband informs me that you would be safe from stings if you wear Lycra, so all you need is a Lycra suit, socks and balaclava ?Happy snorkelling ?
This is a small beach at the end of Mango Bay. We went in by taxi boat.We saw a few small fish while snorkeling.
I visited this bay during an around the island boat trip. The water was very clear, much clearer than Koh Yao, and the fish life was exciting!
