A magnificent Wat which nobody would fail to miss whenever driving on Route 35 which serves between BKK and Cha Am/Hua Hin (and further down to the southern Thailand/Malaysia to eventually reach S’pore). Today I visited the Wat again to pray for one of my 2nd cousins who had passed away recently. I just wanted to pray silently in front of the Buddha, but was pestered by one of white-clad nuns who wanted me to make a donation, saying ” Setakit mai dee…tham bun ko .. sabai jai etc., = the economy in Thailand is not good (implying that business for the Wat has been deteriorating too, due to less donation made by the merit-making visitors and “You would feel more ‘comfortable’ if you’d make one”. I know this kind of degradation or sudden turn of event is common here mostly due to change of the premise’s ownership, but today’s experience was disappointing anyway. The serene moment I had during the dusk hours of the Wat some years ago remains memorable. Back then, the overwhelming sunset to the horizon of Route 35, along w/the lively evening market being held in front of the Wat were also part of something that let you feel the vibe of Thailand.
