17 Knots is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking 289/3 Phetkasem Road, Soi 53 Cha-am, Amphoe Hua Hin, Cha-am District Tassanee Beach Resort, 76120, Thailand
This place is very new but definitely shows a lot of potential, a little bit of tropical island paradise in Cha-am. Just don’t expect to get served quickly no one here is in a rush so go with that in mind and chill on the beach with a beer. Good luck 17 knots hope your first season goes well!
Major disappointmentI’ve been wanted to kitesurf for years. You can imagine my excitement when I realized I get to do it for real this time.I chose 17 knot kite surf center over Kitesurfing school Cha-am by KBA (a well-established school with may branches), in part because I wanted to help out a new business. Plus, other reviews mentioned that it has potential. Boy, I was wrong. But let’s start with the pros. The owner was very nice and thorough. He asked about my experience and background with the sport. He was encouraging and promised to get in touch with the instructor of the best time for the lesson because having wind is crucial. As promised, he got back to me soon after and the lesson was scheduled for 10am. The location is good. It’s between Cha-am and Hua Hin about 10 mins from each direction on a quite beach. As a first timer, I don’t feel too nervous that I’ll fly the kite into someone. And it will happen. The wind in Dec feel just right and the wave is a bit high but manageable. First I learnt how to fly a starter kite, which is smaller and respond quicker to your maneuvering. The big one is really powerful. Here come the cons. The instructor was half an hour late and sporadic. It took him an additional 15 min to get started. He was impatient and doesn’t do a good job explaining. He yelled, “no. no. no.” most of the time, and got frustrated more and more each time I made a mistake. When I was suppose to relax the kite, he kept wanting me to extend my arms further when I couldn’t because my arms are shorter than his. He did not listen to me when I said the kite was too powerful for my size. I felt it pulling me up in the air in various directions, which, in turn, caused him further frustration because I didn’t do it right. Sure enough, he had to adjust the kite’s power later on. The big kite is much more powerful than the starter one. The respond time takes much longer and takes some getting used to. He did not allow me to adjust to that pace on land for a fear of me flying the kite into the trees, which was fair. So, we immediately went for the water lesson. He showed me once how to fly the kite while riding the wave on the belly. I was holding on to his harness. Then we switched. I flew the kite into the water a few times. Each time, he got frustrated, scolded at me, and kept yanking on my harness with force. It was borderline abusive and that was when I called in quit. In the end I only got 2 hr. worth of lesson when it should have been 3. I did not like the way he treated me. Somewhere along the way I asked if he needed a break due to the sign of his stress. He refused and said he’s not a morning person. Overall, he is just not a good instructor. If you expect courtesy, respect, any level of professionalism, or just a good learning experience, you can’t get it here.Note: Just for a point for reference, I’m an avid wakeboarder and rock climber. I do yoga regularly and trained for a marathon and triathlon.
I heard of 17 knots from a friend who recommended it and it was the best idea to come here. There is a bar here and I’m loving the food! Also the people here have been incredibly friendly and helpful. The instructor got me on the board in just 3 days and I’m making major progress. It’s just a very relaxed place and it’s gonna be sad to leave. Thank you 17 knots! I will definitely come back next year!
Spent a few days here during a recent visit to Hua Hin.Let me say immediately that we were not here to learn Kite Surfing – far too energetic for us.! What we did do however was to spend long leasurely hours on a truly idyllic beach with a wonderful sea crashing soft waves onto the sand whilst eating authentic Thai food and European snacks.Wesley and his partner Fredrika were perfect hosts and Michel kept us well looked after with his fabulous Gin and Tonics. If you want to relax on a small, private beach with some beautiful music in the background then you won’t do any better. It’s not easy to find but worth searching for. Enjoy!
We went here to just chill and lay in the sun. It was such a beautiful place, it looked like the beaches in the South of Thailand. Next to that, the owner is very kind and explains everything. They had great smoothies and food. When you just want to chill or learn to kite surf, go here!
After few steps on this private beach I was amazed how many benefits one place can offer. Let’s start kitesurf on the private beach ofcourse and includes that You can lay down on the sunbeds and order some food & drinks, also possible that can enjoy live music jam from local people. Best holiday place from november – may for sure. Cheers for Wesley who’s creating such a good energy and vibe at 17knots kitesurf school
The food, the ambiance, the staff and kite surfers.. think of listing to Bob Marley while watching the kite surfers do there thing from an idyllic seat. This exactly what 17knots is!
Spent one day at the beach with our three kids (9 months, 10 yrs and 12 yrs). Didn’t really expect anything and we got totally amazed when we saw the beach! It was like a piece of paradise to us! Sun, beach, sunbeds, great food and service. What else would you need..? 🙂
