Good golf course, mountain type, drive from city about 30-40 minutes. Good staff, good club house. Not expensive cost.
We thought we’d try a stay and play as we live in nearby Chiang Rai and wanted to try this course out during the off peak season. We arrived and booked 18 holes for after we checked our bags in to our room. The lodge suite given to us was poorly decorated and hadn’t been refurbished since it was built in what seems like the 70’s/80’s (looking at the decor). Having said that, it had a fridge, tv and good views over the pool and mountains.Talking of the pool… I know it’s off peak but it was green with algae. I mean, bright green!Anyway… we teed off and enjoyed our round. The caddies were pleasant, conversational and knew the course but spoke little English as is the norm up here. The course however needs a lot of TLC. The fairways are a mix of grass and weeds. Most of the greens were under repair around the fringe and the caddies allow you to play of them… we were actually very disappointed with the condition overall. Having said it is a good layout. The following day we woke to our breakfast in the club house and proceeded to the front desk to book our final round. The girl behind the counter handed over the coupons and clearly stated we had 2 buggies… so we teed off.On the 3rd, we were met by the caddie manager who was trying to tell us we were only allowed 1 buggy. My wife explained what had been told to us at the front desk (in Thai) and she let us continue, explaining we’d have to discuss it further at the end of the front 9.Once we concluded the front 9 and went to the front desk the girls manager was stubbornly demanding we paid another 500B for the additional buggy. Again my wife explained what had happened but she wouldn’t take no for an answer. It had to be the most disrespectful customer service I’ve ever had at a golf course. Why on earth should we have to pay for someone else’s mistake…?Needless to say, the woman was so rude and stubborn that it wound both myself and my wife up and we agreed to leave as the current vibe created by the front desk staff would have ruined or back 9 anyway.I thoroughly recommend everyone to avoid Waterford Valley until the condition of the course, accommodation and most importantly the staff attitudes are amended.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Waterford Valley Golf Course posted a notice saying only Thai’s can play. No foreigners, even though they have worked and lived here for many years. I spoke with the owner who said that Farang (the Thai word for White westerners) spread the disease and aren’t welcome at his club. Despite the fact the only disease is from returning Thai’s as foreigners were not allowed to enter the country.Have some self respect and vote with your feet!
18-holes golf course with a beautiful scenery of surrounding mountains. The 9th hole was fun and made a challenging game. Comparing to other courses in Chiangrai, waterford is value for money. Inexpensive course fee. I came in Dec and the weather is very nice
