Hippo’s Gym is perched on a picturesque hilltop overlooking Thailand
Came to Samui for 3 weeks. The gym was close to our base. Great way to start your day. Outdoors which is lovely. There is various equipment not high tech but all ok for an all round workout. There is a boxing ring and you can get lessons. Staff are great. They ended up training with us. Once you have finished training you can shower off and change there. It is a short walk to Shangrilah a bar on the beach, perfect for lunch and a well earned beer.
Old and unbelievable dirty!!but, thank god, there is a brand new gym now at bang por. Better you go there!
Great gym. It has free weights (dumbells, barbells) that allow you to lift heavy. It has a range of weight machines which are very good. It has punchbags and a boxing ring also. Good variety of Punchbags, i used these on my own a few times Also had a muay thai private in the ring which was very good! Price of the gym is also very good. Me and my Gf stayed for 5 days and was able to get a good deal.
Place: drive through Mae Nam, which mainly smells like warm sewerage from the on the street drainage system, topped with hot petrol exhaust fumes from motorbikes and depending on where you are, warm raw meat and spicy smelling BBQs. I felt like I needed a shower before I even started. Luckily I brought DEET, mosquitos love me and there were no shortage of them in this outdoor poorly air-conditioned gym. Equipment: well worn towels and even though cleaned, smell like somebody else’s old sweat or clothes that have been left in the washing machine a few days. The hand straps and boxing gloves were the same, smelly and had seen better days. Water is cheap though.Muay Thai lesson: 2 people 800 baht total for 1 hour. Skipped 5 mins, jumped on a small tractor tyre for 5 mins, got strapped/ gloved up 5 mins, 3/4 x 3 mins sparring sessions: jab, uppercut, knee, elbow, foot, kick, poom. I had asked to be worked really hard as I am out of shape but I felt that 1/4 of the sessions were good and the personal trainer didn’t impact me with the focus mits correctly, often she held them slighty out of range so the impact was superficial and I may as well have been punching the air. Going in there I was sure I would have aches and pains the next day from a good workout, but nothing , I felt I burnt more calories and did more strengthening activity with a walk on the beach. I did enjoy learning the new techniques and trying to get them right. The trainer spent 5 mins during our session telling us about the matches she has fought….we didn’t really pay to hear stories though. The worse thing was when the gym manager or older lady came and began taking photos of us in action, without our permission… and then later posted them online, without our permission. Recommendation:We had been prepared to do a week intensive 2 hour daily with them but changed our minds. We will look elsewhere. I wouldn’t recommend it as a way to burn a lot of calories, for the trainer attention, customer experience or facilities but I would recommend it for just one expensive half hearted taster class in Muay Thai – just bring own towel, mosquito spray and expect a very basic everything. Oh and ask them not to take photos if you appreciate your privacy.
great gym for only 700thb for 1 week. Other offers are available. The gym has dumbells, benches, cable flyes and other machines. The gym is very clean and well kept. The machines are very well maintained and oiled. I go to use the weights and the dumbells are not new but in good condition with thick grips which is great for the heavier weights. Overall thoroughly recommended at a great price.
This gym has a lot of equipment but they are all ancient, when you start working out the equipment practically falls apart in your hands, I picked up a weight and my hand was black afterwards don’t know when the last time the equipment was cleaned and as faa as value for money goes it’s abit of a rip considering the quality of the equipment, has potential but needs a fix up and a good clean before someone gets injured.
Hippo’s Gym is something of an institution in Mae Nam. Located in a little cul de sac, five minute walk from the beach, it is a nice friendly place where you feel like you are at home away from home. It is a no nonsense kind of place where anybody can go to train at their own pace or sign up for classes with a trainer who is a local Thai boxing legend. The staff are friendly and approachable and due to the open air nature of the place with a good breeze passing through, one feels like they are working out in some jungle clearing. It is really a nice experience, much different from the cloistered corporate gyms back home. I highly recommend the place and the low prices charged by the owners should entice everyone to join for the entire duration of their stay on Samui. Come in the morning (or at any time, really), have a coffee and chat with the regulars, lift some weights, hit the bags, make some friends. A home away from home without a doubt.
Hippo’s Gym has a refreshing open air atmosphere.Established location with well maintained equipment for a wide variety of workout choices.Friendly staff.Helpful trainers.Check it out.
A great place for training. I love the two walls only concept. they had cheap rooms for long term training in the back, too . the mauy thai coach ran a good workout. While i was there Mr. Germany was training…i guess the pro go there.
Nice open big gym and quiet in Meanam area not far from main road and also have good muay thai training
