i went to white orchid a few years back and really had a memorable dinner by the beach..the food was delicious and so when we decide to go to phuket again, we made it a point to drop by here for a meal. But what an awful decision it turned out, the experience left a bad taste to our otherwise nice holiday. when we came, we were greeted by this obnoxious lady with a yong boy. we ordered drinks a fish meal, a papaya salad and another side dish. when the drinks came, we found ants on one of the glasses. and next came the papaya salad and omelette. the omelette was bland and the papaya salad was disappointing to say the least. no prawns and peanuts and the presentation was really bad..then came the last straw …that obnoxious lady , who we think was more focus on her child than the customers simply served us a purple coloured rice when we wanted white rice. when i requested to change it, she simply said they dnt have any white rice & the rice she served is organic & healthier for us..( so she’s turning out to be our nutritionist???? so i decide to cancel everything and quickly got out of this horrid place…but i think the other lady was nicer and wasn’t speaking in a rude tone…but overall, i think the place has lost its charm ..not like it was a few years ago…much better places to eat and definitely much better service.
Spent a lovely evening and then a long lazy lunch overlooking the sea. This is my kind of place. The food was amazing. I had prawn curry for my evening meal which was delicious. For lunch we had fish cakes and spring rolls washed down with several chilled bottles of Chang. Heaven.
Loved the food, had their lobsters which were priced really great, and delicious, green curry was great, but not enough sauce, pad thai and papaya salad was also yum… great service they let us drink our own wine and gave us dessertsSo good, we went twice!!
I was looking for something fun to do that was close to Hyatt Regency while my husband was busy with his business meetings. It was just what I was looking for!
Aunty Angela and her daughter were so sweet and loving. They run a simple restaurant because they are trying to recover still from the misfortune of the tsunami in 2004… but she really takes her time explaining every recipe, fresh ingredients, and super tasty food! Definitely a great experience that couldn’t have been any more authentic and tasty. Auntie even offered to gives us a ride back to our hotel since it started raining. Her daughter cleaned up their car for us and she took us! Lovely people. Can’t wait to go home and cook Auntie’s delicious and easy recipes for friends and family.
10 out of 10! The White Orchard was the highlight of our trip. The restaurant is right on the beach in a quiet bay near Kamala. The atmosphere is very relaxed and homely. We visited three times during our stay in Phuket. Once for dinner, where we were so impressed by the food (the best Thai food we’ve ever tasted) we booked into Aunty Angela’s cooking class. The class was fantastic, teaching us how to make classic red and green curries, pad Thai , Tom Yum and mango sticky rice. Aunty Angela and her family were so warm and welcoming – we had so much fun! On our final day we returned for a special Thai BBQ buffet, complete with fireworks! You have to visit the White Orchid when in Phuket. A hidden gem that cannot be missed! Thank you Angela!
This is a gem. I have always loved Thai food. However, I now have a totally greater appreciation for the effort and love that goes into their cooking. My wife and I had some time to kill as it was raining. We found this school on Trip Advisor and are very happy we did. Angela and her daughter are wonderful teachers. It is not just the recipes but the way they teach you to prepare the foods that struck me. Fortunately, we videoed the last item so we will not forget some of their methods. The class includes two beers or soft drinks per person which they offer right away. We cooked a wonderful Chicken with Red Curry. Everything was from scratch. We made the Red Curry first and it was fascinating to learn how it is made. Then we cooked the vegetables and chicken and the dish came together beautifully. The taste and presentation were fantastic.Next we made Pad Thai with Squid and Shrimp. You could choose to do it with chicken or just vegetables. Again, it was such a cool experience to see how this dish I had had so many times was made. By the way, the recipes she shares were passed from her grandmother. Finally, we ended with Tom Yom Soup also with Squid & Shrimp although we could have opted for chicken or vegetables only. So much of modern food is so processed. It was wonderful to taste how much flavor comes from all natural, fresh ingredients. Angela has a very sweet and funny personality and she is a joy to be around. We ended up hanging out for an hour after class. The location is humble, it was completely wiped out in the tsunami. Angela was there and lost everything. She has been building her business back ever since. Ask her about it to learn first-hand from someone who was in the middle of it. The location has an incredible view as it is across the street from the ocean. You are cooking while looking out at an amazing view. It is covered but open in the front so it has a very tropical feel. The location is right next to the Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort. We are extremely happy we found this class and highly recommend it.
Very fun and enjoyable experience!! The instructor was very friendly and helpful. This is a must do in Kamala with your significant other
So we were really looking forward to our pre booked cookery class. We did something similar in Vietnam and it was an amazing experience and a fantastic platform for cooking new and exciting food. Anyway, long story short we turned up with our booking confirmation and the woman who ran the show was asleep behind the counter! She would not get up to speak with us but made a young girl try to give us flyer with timings on. I had already received a message stating a 2-4pm time slot. She obviously didn’t fancy taking the class and we left with 2 very disappointed kids. Wasted a 600bt taxi fare! If I was to give advice on this cookery school it would be go elsewhere. Complete waste of an afternoon and we are all very disappointed as we don’t really have time to book another class before we go home tomorrow.
We picked this place going off reviews and although there where other more up market options I argued that I wanted something more authentic. I wish I hadn’t. From memory this cost 3400 Baht for the 2 of us so 1700 Baht each. The lady taking the class was very friendly and spoke good English but unfortunately she did most of the cooking while we watched. We cooked 3 dishes but each separately, then sat down to eat after cooking each meal. The food was good but we didn’t realize we where cooking more meals so we where full after the first course and hardly touched the remaining food.
