  1. One of the best experiences of my life.Anyone looking to do a sailing course that will take you from a novice (or someone with limited sailing experience), to a point where you are fully equipped with the confidence and skills you need to head out on the water whilst keeping your crew, your fellow mariners, and your boat safe, would be foolish not to sign up to the 10-day bareboat skipper course with SailQuest Sailing School Thailand.Captain’s Tim, Howard and Joe are so over-qualified with expertise and years of sailing experience, that it’s almost ridiculous. They are all great guys and easy to get on with, and although the course is intensive and there’s a lot of information to absorb in a relatively short space of time, the guys keep reinforcing it in a way that somehow makes it stick in your brain.Sailing the gulf of Thailand is an amazing place to train and learn the skills you need to sail safely, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend SailQuest Sailing School Thailand and the courses they offer to anyone considering learning to sail. You won’t regret it!

  2. Had an awesome time with Sailquest in sunny Thailand last April. The whole course was very well balanced, enjoyable and useful for both newcomers to the sailing world and more trained skippers. Special mention to the dynamic duo of instructors Howard and Joe who were both professional and fun during the whole experience. I would highly recommend the course to anyone who’s interested in chartering his own boat, no matter the level of experience.

  3. I have just returned from my second visit to Sailquest sailing school, Yes twice, As once was not enough. After buying a small boat i had taught myself the fundamentals and sailed a little over the years on the west coast of Canada trying to figure out how to sail and owned a few more boats there, However my residence has changed and i am not able to look after a boat from Edmonton Alberta where i now live.I realized it would be best to just charter a boat on vacations wherever i decided to go. Quickly i found out i would need certification to charter boats! What a concept!I looked at a lot of schools worldwide checked out their reviews and chose Sailquest Asia which had great reviews. I chose Sailquest Asia as i had never been to Thailand and heard great things about it and recognized it as the greatest value. The course is 10 days but i intended to stay for a month and could not find a better place with affordable places to stay and such a variety of things to see and explore within my budget. Asia it is then.I arrived at Sailquest and was quickly introduced to the Sailquest team and my training shipmates who were all great people that i still correspond with sharing stories about sailing and travels etc.I was quickly aware of what i failed or neglected to learn on my own but with my basic understanding of sailing and prior review of the course materials (suggested reading as outlined by captain Tim before arrival) my shipmates and i were able to absorb the material and successfully complete the Bareboat skippers test successfully, Yippee. I was from then on a qualified Bareboat Skipper.Nine months later, last Christmas day i arrived in Ceinfuegos Cuba boarded a chartered 40 foot Catamaran named Kupela and made a sail plan for Cayo Largo and departed with my wife and three friends. We were able to confidently and safely navigate the 81 miles offshore to Cayo Guano then explored the archipelago including the smaller islands and Cayo Largo, Which is the main destination there for 5 days before returning to Ceinfuegos and sadly ending the charter. I honestly would never have been able to enjoy this adventure without the training and confidence i received at Sailquest. When i got home i quickly realized that i wanted to return to Thailand and sail with Captain Tim and his team again so after discussions and some emailing i was headed back to Sailquest and Thailand to participate in something new, The Samui Regatta which is a premier event and the final leg of the years Regattas in Asia. I had never been involved in racing and was excited to get into it.There are some participation options for the Regatta but i chose to participate in the 215 mile delivery to and from Samui departing from the Ocean Marina Yacht Club where Sailquest is located. Well we left OMYC at noon and sailed across the gulf the first day before anchoring up for the night. The next morning after the provided meal on board we were sailing along the west coast southbound in the Gulf of Thailand and after another nights anchorage we headed offshore destined for Samui. We arrived just when Captain Tim said we would arrive and registered the boat,Checked in at the hotels we all chose to stay at for the week and then got dolled up for the opening ceremonies. The next 6 days is burned into memory but in short we raced a different course each day and won first place on the first day of the first Regatta i have ever been in, I was and remain thrilled. We raced hard in light conditions all week and ended with a 3rd overall for the week in the IRC Cruising Class. what a team and what a event.I made great friends with my shipmates, Captain Tim and Captain Howard as well as the other members and owners of the fleet of boats in our class. All of the other teams were approachable and really friendly even willing to help out their competitors which is extraordinary in competitive events. We ended up receiving a trophy each day which Captain Tim quickly gave out to the participants, I keep mine on a shelf in my office where it shall remain as long as i breath.I can barely express how great it was learning to sail effectively with Captain Tim and Sailquest. it is truly a first class operation and Captain Tim and his companies representatives willingly share whatever time is required to ensure the success of each person that arrives at Sailquest. Captain Tim truly exceeded all my expectations Twice…Skipper Lee.

  4. I had a 10 days bareboat skipper course. I really enjoyed my time with the SailQuest.A lot of new information and exciting practice with experienced and highly skilled instructors.

  5. I’m giving this sailing school a five star review. Captain Tim and his two instructors Joe and Howard did a really great and thorough job while I attended the 10 day skipper’s course. There are a couple of reasons that I suspect that this school edges out some other schools in shear educational chops. First, Captain Tim really cares about the Rules of the Road, the safety of his students, and the well being of the sailing community. He has a REALLY deep bag of nautical knowledge. Tim’s boats are good enough to run a sailing school but not so great that everything works with all the bells and whistles (like electric winches). For this reason ( and this is NOT a thinly veiled complaint), you get real life sailing experience, mechanical and electrical maintenance and so forth. Secondly, Pattay is a large and busy port where you actually use the rules of the road. Students learn how sea traffic is supposed to flow, recognition of cardinal markers, and proper and safe passage planning. There are many choices of great accommodations at what I thought were very reasonable prices within walking distance of the school. The overnight sail was a riot…..and that’s all I’m going to say about that. This sailing course was not easy and I found myself studying in my hotel room every night. I would highly suggest this approach. Sailing is serious and you might as well get as much out of this course as you can. If I had one complaint, I would have liked to have seen more of Captain Tim. Having said that, Joe and Howard are so qualified and delightful that you really get your moneys worth from those two. I understand that Tim has to do an enormous amount of admin work to keep the school running properly. We had a wonderful group in our class and the camaraderie was great. I would recommend this school as a great intro to sailing or perhaps a fun way to sharpen the saw if you already have a background in sailing.

  6. Just completed 10 days with the SailQuest Sailing School, Thailand and I can thoroughly recommend them to anyone who wants to get a comprehensive, professional and thoroughly enjoyable sailing experience. For anyone who is nervous about their prior knowledge or maybe just not sure whether they can do 10 days sailing this is the course for you. Captain Tim and his fellow instructors (Joe and Howard) are not only experienced and knowledgeable but genuinely caring on your circumstances and will patiently walk you through any areas you may need help in. The curriculum is detailed but also there are enough gaps to take in the fun of sailing and simply chat about different areas that you are interested in. There is also detailed course notes and other information you can take away and study. Practical safety was always at the forefront and we practiced issues such as man overboard and collision avoidance rather than just looked at them in a book. Don’t worry about the lower rating I gave the condition of vessel as it is not an issue. The main boat we used is older but is easy to learn on and it is beneficial to not have all the bells and whistles of modern plastic boats. I found I was not constantly looking for easy guidance from electronics or other aids but genuinely acquiring a “feel” for what was happening around me. That is the best way to learn. I am looking at buying a boat and the SailQuest Team were always supportive with practical, helpful suggestions and encouragement and at no time were condescending or negative. All in all I thoroughly recommend the course Captain Tim and his team at SailQuest conduct. DO yourself a favor.

  7. I didn’t want this course to end. That is how fun it was. Sailing every day on one of three really cool boats. Playing with charts and tide tables and compasses. Eating great food and joking with my classmates and teachers. Learning about diesel engines and pumping systems and anchoring techniques and going on boat tours with brokers and learning to park a boat in a marina full of superyachts…my inner 12-year-old was in HEAVEN. If you are a sailor, or even if you aren’t, this course is a BLAST. The teachers are hilarious. The atmosphere is chill. The information is interesting and everything is taught hands-on. Plus it is an incredible value. If you look at comparable programs elsewhere you will see: this is VERY affordable. In a word: Excellent.

  8. My partner and I just completed the 10 day course and had a great time! We were super happy to find an affordable sailing course to begin our adventures on the sea.The instructors (Joe & Howard) are fantastic and really know their stuff. They’re very good teachers and went through the theory material as many times as needed for us to understand. The course is hands on from the beginning which was a great way to learn. We spent most of our time on the Jeanneau 43 (Paprika), but we did get an afternoon on the smaller racer X-99 (Hi Jinks). As expected the training boats are not brand new but learning on an older boat gave us valuable experience and we always felt safe with Howard and Joe. Unfortunately the Catamaran was out of the water for repairs but we were told about this before the course started and it didn’t matter for us.We feel prepared to charter a boat for ourselves and we can’t wait to get back in the water 🙂

  9. Given this review is being written some time since the last flood, do note there have been some changes to the course (change in instructors, boat situation). However the boat situation is temporary and we believe the course is still an excellent option for aspiring sailors. Also note that for our round of classes, Tim led the class alone which turns out to be a blessing as he is a great instructor with tons of experience to share! Glad to be taught directly by Captain Tim. This course is designed to teach you what you need to know to skipper a boat (with a focus on liveaboard cruising), so besides the rules of the road which are heavily emphasised and should be, there is a good level of detail into the realistic experience and mechanics of the boat, such as what could go wrong and how to fix things when they go wrong. Lesson materials, manuals, and tests/exams are well and extensively written and provided in hard copy to students. Though not everything in the notes is covered verbally in class, reading these should supplement your learning well. In terms of hands-on experience, we did have ample opportunities to perform different roles on the boat when setting off, returning, docking, trimming, steering, etc. There wasn’t an emphasis on racing and going for maximum speed, if that was what you’re looking for, but I’m sure if you ask you’ll be able to learn something. Tim is also a great storyteller and I found his stories and anecdotes fun to listen to. Chilled water was provided which was a nice touch.Nonetheless, there were definitely some areas for improvement with regards to punctuality and sometimes the lack of training yachts which is a temporary situation as explained by Tim, hence the missing “star”. Still, the design of the lesson materials and the class, together with Tim’s experience and sharing of information, makes this an excellent choice. Glad to have done the course with SailQuest under Tim!

  10. The standing 5 stars is enabling Tim to continue scamming people. The School is no longer able to certify anyone. Captain Tim is a fraud and a junkie. 2 hours late every single day clearly strung out off yaba. We covered maybe 50% of the website listed course itinerary. On day 9/10 the worst educational experiences I’ve ever had in my life, November 2023: I found out the hard way that his credentials were pulled and no longer valid via the CEO of IYT. The guy doesn’t even have a sailboat, we operated on a borrowed sub par vessel.I got lucky. I learned more about sailing theory from the commercial airline pilot who unfortunately found himself in my same situation. Miss you Jason. As of this post: Do not. DO NOT pay a deposit. The Ocean Marina school is now abandoned but the website is up and running, continuing to accept payments. People continue to travel across the world to come to learn how to sail and waste their time. I’m still in Thailand, checking up every now and then. If you have been bamboozled the same way I was and have found your self empty handed in ocean marina: “Simpson, Sampson sailing academy” 5-6 units to the east. They’re not IYT certified yet BUT they will be soon.Make an official complaint to the marina, Email IYT. Raise hell.
