Probably my tenth visit to Hau Hin in the last 20 years. Each time I’ve played at least 3 times, so I have played Springfield before. The last time was January 2020. Yes, it’s still a quality layout but the course is in the worst condition I’ve seen it, A lot of the greens look terrible. However, they putt ok. They really shouldn’t be charging for range balls when you don’t get to play from a flat grass area. And the putting / chipping area, near the practice range, is now closed, as it’s in such bad condition. So a pre play warm up does not give you a good start to your round. There are a number of waste areas beside the fairways – effectively huge bunkers that don’t get raked (which is the norm – thus ok). But in many the sand has gone and all your left with is stoney ground. And some waste ares are now full of weeds where you have little chance of finding your ball. Tees and fairway grass are now at best average. Yes, they’ve been through a tough time with Covid but the owners really need to wake up and spend some money to get the course back to where it was.
Springfield is a great golf course. Great variation in the outlay and very Challenging. The greens are great but difficult. The last two rounds we had great caddies (304 & 314) they know the greens and if only I had bigger ears I would have scored better. The course ranks in my opinion just below Banyan and Black Mountain.
Have played Springfield for over a decade and right now it’s in the poorest condition I’ve ever seen it. The fairways are looking shabby, the bunkers have no sand in most of them so you’re coming out of compacted sand most of the time, and the greens are in a really poor condition from which, you will frequently be putting amongst small tufts of grass in bald areas, on the green! So you can’t really be sure in which direction your ball is going to move in once it sets off. Of course the 18th green is ok as you can see that from the clubhouse! So if they can take care of that one, why are the other 17 so poor? They tell us they are ripping up the A course (due to it’s poor condition I guess) and diverting golfers onto the more difficult C course but the greens there are already showing signs of the same problems on A and of course you’ll still have poor greens on B course to navigate. Springfield appear to believe the answer to poor greens is throw another ton of sand on top of the previous tons of sand, presumably to hide the bald patches, which does nothing to treat the problem they have. In short Springfield which has always enjoyed a good reputation in an area of many good golf courses until recently, needs to employ a decent greenskeeper as right now it’s very clear whoever has the job is well out of their depth and members are being taken for a ride. Bizarrely there are no real marshals at Springfield GC, so if you are stuck behind a slow 5 ball (which they allow if they each have a buggy), no-one is going to help you out. Especially if the slow group is Thai. I have seen one guy permenently sat in a buggy charging around the course but his soul function appears to be trying to catch out caddies very minor indiscretions and giving them unpaid ‘holidays’ from work. A little ironic when he’s clearly being paid to do not a lot. Oh and the caddies have been instructed if they provide negative feedback from players they could lose their jobs! The facilities are just about ok but the showers are grubby with numerous shower heads not working properly. Few golfers stay for a beer after it seems, possibly due to high prices or lack of options which is a lost opportunity. The staff in just about all areas are nice, from reception, through the restaurant and onto the course, but they are being completely undermined by whoever is managing this course. This course not only needs a ton of money thrown at it to get it back to past glories, but is in desperate need of professional, qualified golf course personnel starting with a greenskeeper as a matter of urgency, that can halt the reputational slide of this golf club into oblivion.Until that happens there are far better golf courses within a short distance of this one.
Probably an easier deck compared to Black Mountain and Banyan, this Nicklaus-designed layout is a touch dated but still maintains an old school charm. Condition of the course is good but not brilliant, but the greens are very nice and wickedly fast. A good course to play last before returning to Bangkok because it’s further north than the others in Hua Hin
Very disappointed with the overall layout of this Jack Nicklaus designed course. The condition of the course very poor and needs serious improvement. Some of the bunkers were like playing out of bog .Pro shop very poorly stocked. If considering playing here have a look at some of the alternatives in the area.
You can imagine from the layout that this Nicklaus designed course was well worth playing when it was in its prime. But having played this course recently it is sad to see such a good design in such bad condition. The bunkers are not bunkers in the real sense. Little or no fresh sand in them. Fairways are just about ok, but greens are really poor. I can’t decide whether the greens have been cut bare, but there is a covering of fine sand which makes putting difficult. The place looks tired and in need of complete overhaul.
Back again playing Springfield in November 2023. I was here at the same time of year in 2022, and posted a reasonably critical review about the condition of the course – see https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g297919-d1965743-r869427229-Springfield_Royal_Country_Club-Cha_am_Phetchaburi_Province.htmlIn 2023, the A nine was taken out of play and the greens have been redone. Thus, throughout the year most players have been playing the B and C nines, to get 18 holes. I’ve not played the C nine, for a number of years, but it was not designed by Jack Nicklaus and thus isn’t a great layout. This year I’ve played a couple of rounds on A and B. The reworked A greens aren’t great. Last year they looked awful, but actually putted ok. This year they are slow and there are signs of the same disease (?) on some of the reworked greens. Springfields management might say it’s too early to judge the rework on A – and this could be true. I understand that B greens might be reworked in 2024, but the management are looking at the success from A in 2023’s rework before shutting B for many months. I was critical about the waste areas on A and B last year. They are better now but not as good as they were say 5 years ago. There are signs that some money has been spent. New bridges and some fairway areas reworked. However, the fairways still need a lot of work. They are at best mediocre. A mix of grasses and some weeds. Bunkers are not great. Some have little sand. Thus, inconsistent. So, overall better than it was 2022, but a long way to go. [ and I’d avoid playing a full fee if your 18 holes includes the C nine]
On a group golfing trip to Hua Hin in October 2024, we played several courses, and enjoyed them all except this one. Springfield appeared dated and poorly maintained, and was not good value for money. All the staff tried hard, but the condition of the course let them down. Recommend playing elsewhere until the standard improves.
I posted reviews re Springfield on Trip Advisor in November 2022 and 2023. In 2022, I was critical of the condition of the course and in 2023, I commented on the rework of the A nine greens. My 2023 review raised concerns that the reworked greens were again showing signs of disease. It’s now November 2024 and I’ve returned again and I’ve been appalled by the condition of the A and B nines – particularly the greens. The greens have to be the worst I’ve ever played at comparable green fee prices.‘A’ nine greens, which were reworked in 2023, are far worse than I’ve seen them in the last 20 years. Large patches of disease. And they don’t putt well.On 10th November 2024, green staff were adding in new turfs into the fourth green. But they were only adding new turf to severely affected areas, ignoring the mildly disease affected grass adjoining the new turf. I am no grass expert but assume that this is pointless, as the disease from mildly affected areas will very soon transfer to the new turf. The B nine’s greens didn’t get reworked in mid 2024, as I thought was reported as planned in 2023, however some rework has been done of B’s fairways. B’s greens remain as bad, diseased and not putting well. But arguably better than A’s greens. B’s fairway work is ongoing and they might quickly improve, but they are far from a pleasure to play on now. There are great bits of fairway. In front of B’s second and 5th greens. Why can’t all fairways be like these?Overall, it seems that Springfield need to bring in a proven and qualified grass / greens expert in, for direction and then spend what ever is needed to get this fantastic layout back to the condition it was 10 years ago.
i play many couses from J-Nicklaus. but no course was in so bad conditions, really not good from tee to green. i think the country club sell not so much villas how necessary and now they have not enough money for greenkeeping.
