If you plan to have a long stay in Chiang Mai and love to cook, this is definite a nice place for you to visit. There is a lot of nice Thai ingredients and fresh paste to shop. We were looking for the kaiff lime and we just the picture to the owner (we can’t speak Thai) brought us to another shop to show us where to buy. We found this place is a lot better than Warrorot market where it only sold dried fruits souvenir.
Coming from cold northern climate I love seeing all of the local fruits and great variety of vegetables. Plenty of dried and fresh fish, meats and poultry. Fresh made curries and everything you need.Small food counters spread around through the stalls. Covered parking for local deliveries of product. Some housewares etc. Not much for souvenirs if that what you want. This was the most “genuine” local market I visited in the proximity of Chiang Mai.I went early morning – around 7 AM and really enjoyed my walk and breakfast.
Muang Mai Market is a large market in Chiang Mai. It is near the Ping River and American consulate. It is busy most times of the day. The street traffic is often slow and jammed with cars. The market is off the street and has many narrow roads. Farmers will bring truck loads of fresh fruits and vegetables from the country side. There are often motorcycles and some with side cars snaking down the alleys. Motorcyclists will even go into the market buildings. You can find meats of all types- and photograph daily life. Nothing moves fast here.
We come at about 6am. The fruits here are so cheap. You can buy food items also. For example fish curry with rice, steamed sticky rice with bananas, fried sesame balls etc.
Just 10 minutes walk from Warorot Market is Muang Mai Market which house the fruits wholesalers. You may also buy fruits by the weight.Fruits sold here are the same price as those which you get at Warorot Market. Nothing extraordinarily different, special nor cheaper that is worth the walk from Warorot. If you walk from Warorot, you will come across a street full of vendors selling fresh vegetables. It’s an experience walk through these streets as you will see vegetables which you may not have seen back home. The aroma of the spices fills the air, amidst the hustle and bustle of the market crowd and vendors.
If you’re staying in the area for more 3 days or more, the market is a good place to go to grab at the very least some fresh fruit for breakfast. There’s a variety of items available and the prices at great.
Walking around Old town Chiang Mai we noticed this market . Still in a old style building which gives it a relaxing feeling . Great selection of fruit and vegetables. Lots of spices , condiments, sauces, . Also not bad priced clothing to . And being a bigger guy it was a good surprise.
Very interesting and cheap goods, great to get away from the hoards of tourists! I got there using the ‘Grab’ app which I would recommend to anyone travelling to Chiang Mai. Create your own ‘tours’, using this cheap and efficient taxi service.
keeps you on your toes walking through this market with thousands of people and as many motor bikes. If you want authentic wholesale and peoples market this is it. I look for fruit to send back seeds to hawaii so that we can grow the more unusual fruit there. We could find a lot here even in the off season. well worth the experience just keep your eyes opens. Very little english spoken so learn a littlke thai and how to talk with your hands. Have some apps that translate
If you are looking for a very local market that is not touristy visited and enjoy the atmosphere of organised chaos ? Then this is the place to go. Probably one of the nicest markets I have seen. Fresh fruit and fish. A very nice place and a great experience!!
