The most amazing place I have ever been to. Amazing staff, Amazing environment and amazing elephants! Absolutely a must when you are in chiang mai!!! Strongly recommend!!!
The elephant experience was by far the best thing we had done, since arriving in Thailand. We booked the early morning session with the elephants and were picked up at 7am.The trip to the elephants took around two hours. I long time to be sitting in un-padded, pick-up truck.Once we arrived in the mountains, the road disappeared and turned in to a jungle terrain. The makeshift road was uneven and riddled with potholes. The bumpy journey partnered with the thin mountain air isn’t a nice combination. For anyone who suffers with motion or car sickness, I would strongly advise taking something beforehand, to combat the inevitable. When we arrived, we met our tour guide ‘Oreo’. He instructed us to change in to our ‘dirty clothing’ and come back, once we had done so. He also provided each of us with a green poncho, as part of a group identification. Once we’d changed and applied our ponchos, Oreo provided us with a brief lecture about the facility, the elephants, and their history. He said they had 5 elephants within their care, ranging from a grandmother, to a baby. After the lecture, he led us to the feeding area, where the elephants were waiting for us. Turned out we were the only 3 people on the tour, so we had the elephants all to ourselves! When we turned the corner, there they were. What a spectacle! Once we fed the elephants, we had some observation time. Simply watching them interact with one another and gave us an opportunity to take photos/videos. To stand next to them and be that close to one, you cannot help but be in awe of them.During this observational time, you couldn’t help but notice the elephant’s behaviour, and, their handler’s behaviour. A few times I noticed the handlers would heavily hit or kick the elephants, in order to get them to move.Oreo informed us this was because the elephants had tough skin, therefore the handlers had to be heavy handed, for the elephants to feel their connection. However, I wasn’t overly convinced. I felt the handlers, including Oreo at times, were too physical with the elephants. After observing, we followed a couple of the elephants down to a mud pool, where we would give them a mud bath. Thanks to the help of Oreo, we all got covered from head to toe in mud.All that was left was to wash the elephants (and ourselves) in the waterfall. The scenery was remarkable. Once the elephants had been bathed, we washed ourselves and sat down for a tradition Thai lunch, which was included within the tour.Apart from the handling of the elephants (which in my opinion wasn’t required) and Oreo’s ‘overly friendly’ hands, the experience was incredible. The tour was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Visiting the elephants needs to be on your to-do list!Stay lucky.
my friends and I booked this tour last minute, and we’re glad that we did. we had such a wonderful time. you get to feed the elephants, roam around with them, give them a mud bath, and then swim in the watering hole with them. they’re all treated very well by the mahouts and I would highly recommend this experience to anyonethe best part was our guide, Abby (John Wayne). he was super friendly, knowledgeable, and just downright hilarious. he helped make the trip so worthwhile
I had the best day of my life in this park! hosts were amazing, elephants are so well treated and they are so happy..we had a full day package and everything was perfect. lunch, education, engagement with elephants, everything.I recommend it with all my ❤️hope to be back someday.
Amazing place!! We had such a fabulous time. The elephants are extremely well treated. We had a beautiful lunch, got to swim with the elephants and observe them in their habitat. We had so much fun and loved every moment of the experience
Had a fantastic day at Elephant Jungle Paradise Park. Guides were brilliant. Staff seemed to really care for the animals and feeding and bathing them was such a wonderful experience. The park is literally in the middle of the jungle and only accessible by 4×4 so truly in the elephants own habitat. Our children are 5 and 8 and had the best day ever. The staff made extra effort to ensure they were looked after at all times. The waterfall experience was amazing. All topped off with yummy lunch. Would recommend this trip to anyone!
We didt the full day experience. We really enjoyed our time with the elephants. What we enjoyed must was that everything was local and we would able to be a lot with the animals. It is an amazing place to be!
We were disappointed with our trip to EJPP. But I want to make it clear that our criticism has nothing to do with animal welfare – from what we could see, the animals were happy and well cared for. It was the overall experience that left something to be desired. The 90-minute drive in an open truck was not fun – it was before sunrise in winter, and we were freezing. The last 7 km were particularly awful, along a rutted dirt track, being bounced around like popcorn. Maybe some people enjoy that kind of thing; for me, it ruined the trip. I’d have appreciated a moment to sit quietly and recover when we arrived; some tours offer a welcome drink, but all we had at EJPP were filthy toilets and basic changing rooms (to change into our togs). We were given a short spiel about elephants, then we got to meet them, and feed them some cobs of corn. Later we plastered them with mud, and followed them down to a waterfall where, let’s face it, they washed themselves pretty efficiently without our help, though we were given buckets to throw water at them. During these activities the staff barely spoke to us; I guess they didn’t have much English, but the least they could have done was learn our names for when they needed to get our attention. They addressed our two sons as ‘boy’, which got on my nerves.Elephants are amazing creatures and it’s been a lifelong dream of mine to meet them and interact with them. I am pleased I got to do that, but frankly there are dozens of elephant parks around Chiang Mai, and many of them (though not all) have high ethical standards and do not offer rides. Do yourself a favour and find one where the humans are as friendly and engaging as the elephants.
We had a great half day trip visiting this sanctuary which is up in the hills and is remote… approx 1hr 45 min drive from chiang mai centre. The 5 elephants were amazing, especially the baby elephant who was very playful. We fed the elephants, covered them in mud and then helped to wash it off. Orio was the guide and was lovely and spoke enough English for us to get along. The elephants were walking around free and appeared relaxed amongst everyone, no canes or force used. The lunch/snack was a lovely addition – basic vegetarian stirfry. This is a remote and basic sanctuary, not a large scale operation – however this helped to make it more authentic.
Beautiful experience, two fully grown elephants, grandma and mummy, plus a 27 day old baby. They’re all well looked after with no riding or performances etc. The guide was a very helpful, him being the 5th generation of elephant carers in his family. The sanctuary is set in the verdant hills of Northern Thailand. Highly recommended.
