  1. Well worth the visit to see how they look after the old elephants now their use as beasts of burden has dropped off.I only had a short visit, but there are day and stay options available which include washing, feeding and more.

  2. We chose to go here, among many elephant sanctuaries, based on the recommendations of friends who had been there and were glad we did. Seeing the retired elephants in a place where they are cared for as they live out the remainder of their years was exceptional. (One elephant was 94 years old!). Our guide was very good and explained how the elephants were cared for as well as seeing that we had the opportunity to interact with them by feeding them as well as bathing one. We don’t know about the other sanctuaries but highly recommend visiting the Elephant Care Center.

  3. We had a fabulous morning here – preparing feed for the aged elephants, feeding them, learning about them and taking them to the river and scrubbing them down! Thankfully, we were loaned clothes and clogs for the experience so didn’t get our own clothes wet. The elephants are so well looked after. It was a great experience.

  4. The staff are professional and kind to the elephants. There are no baby elephants here and you cannot ride them, which they tell you upfront, in case you are interested in that, in which case, you can go elsewhere. The package we paid for included all day with the elephants, and a tasty lunch of our choice (try the spring rolls – delicious!). Our tour guide answered our questions about whichever elephant we were looking at, which was educational. We saw an elephant having a bath, we prepared one of four salads for our particular elephant that day (Mae Bwon Com is her name), medicine, and tasty but healthy snacks for all the elephants. We also gave Mae a bath and we scrubbed her clean (until her next dirt bath). It was amazing to be so close to elephants – a first for me! Their trunks breathe deeply – one can hear it – and are so dexterous to pick up leaves off the ground or pick up a baby banana with the end of their trunk. Turns out, elephants love baby bananas. I am glad my friends and I went to this place and supported it, since too many places do not put such care into their animals as Thai Elephant Care Center does. Many places abuse their animals for the sake of tourists’ enjoyment and pictures. Bring water to stay hydrated, though the place offers complimentary, filtered water. They also let you change into the same outfit as the mahmouts, or elephant caretakers, so you can leave your clothes / valuables in a locker. Don’t pack heavy for this trip. I wore sneakers, however, it was better to change into crocs to not worry about getting wet.

  5. Our half day in Elephant Care Center is the highlight of our trip to Chiang Mai. The old elephants are so cute that we really wanted to say longer with them. Mr. The, our guide from the center, is very knowledgeable and humerous. He made our trip both educational and memorable. The center just receives small groups and provides no riding. If you want private and unique experience, this ethical camp is surely one of the best choices.

  6. This is a really lovely Care Centre to visit, as it helps older retired elephants to live out their later years in an atmosphere of loving care and treatment if ill.I found the elephant graveyard quite moving as the headstones show how well loved they were.I think of the place as a nursing home for older elephants.

  7. We read a lot about exploiting elefants and we were not sure where to experience some time with those beautiful creatures. After some research we landed on this facility that is run by the government and is no-profit. They have a full set-up hospital for elephants. It’s a hour drive south of Chiang Mai but the effort is well repaid. You get the chance to interat with elephants and even bath with them (if you feel like doing it). Kids enjoyed it very much.

  8. We signed up for the half day visit. It is not easy to connect with these folks but absolutely worth it! Best to have your hotel or a Thai friend call and make the reservation. They pick you up and bring you back. Elderly elephants live here and the youngest is 50+ years old! Bond is the guide and a wonderful young man. You can participate as much or little as you like. Feeding, food prep, bathing. It is obvious the people there love these elephants and dedicate themselves to their well being. 6 of us went and each of us loved it!Remember: Bon Bon!Have fun!

  9. This is a wonderful place where elephants are cared for in later life. They are all domesticated elephants who used to work before so do not know how to survive in the wild. Each elephants has their own Mahout to look after them and the interaction between man and elephant is wonderful. We were given mahout clothes to change into with hats and shoes and we learnt about elephants (particularly the elderly ones), their care programme and their food.We fed them bananas and then made the herbal balls as well as grinding up the grass to feed them. We then walked with the elephants to the stream and bathed and cleaned them. An incredible experience with these wonderful animals that I would recommend to anyone.

  10. What a great day ! Fed the elephants, washed them, bathed them, had a water fight with them and others, Twas a great day. !!
