  1. We spent a lot of time near the beautiful and peaceful lake. fFshermen and street vendors adorn the landscape. The sunsets on the lake are beautiful and different each time, a treat for photographers. Some hotels and guesthouses are reasonably priced at the edge and near the lake. The restaurants follow each other and the dishes are delicious. It is a very interesting step to go to Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai.We often do this trip on a motorcycle, which makes this stage really enjoyable. In addition there are wonderful temples to visit in the center and around. Little known to tourists, it’s worth seeing.

  2. Lovely to walk first thing in the morning and at Sunset. Watching boats on the lake at sunset is pretty spectacular. Sitting on a park bench or steps to relax and just watch is a great way to relax and immerse yourself with the locals, also chatting with the many fishermen if a must.

  3. This is a large (16,000 Ha) artificial lake, established thanks to King Rama IX’s grandmother who saw the potential of the site in ensuring continuous water for the region’s needs. It has turned out to be an inspired decision and the view of the cloud covered mountains from the town’s well maintained waterfront is wonderful and worth plenty of photos. Sunset (and the dawn from our hotel) are stunning. Get the boat, slowly rowed across the lake with a single oar, to the small temple in the middle. It only costs 30 baht per passenger – or if you rent the whole boat, 150 baht.

  4. Phayao Lake is a large lake at the base of the mountains makes for pretty view! Although it was raining while I was there, I could see enough of the lake and surrounding mountains, that I know I want to return in the summer. Take a trip through the mountains from Chiang Mai and you will be rewarded. I think Phayao City is not a tourist destination for most westerners, but the area has a lot to offer and explore. Phayao Lake is pretty and there are parks and walking paths along the lake in the city.

  5. This long and impressive lake extends from the town on one side to the hills and mountains the other side. Half way across from the town, is an island with a temple, on the site of an earlier far larger temple, which sank into the lake at an earlier age. Slow punt like boats ferry one across to the island, manned by a skilled oarsman!

  6. We heard about lotus flowers being in bloom this time of the year,December to January,so we took a trip up north and stayed in the Gate Way hotel.they offered free bikes so first thing we did was driving to the lake, which was just a 5/10 minute drive. The sun was just setting and the view was amazing! They, the staff showed us on a map how to get to the place where we could rent a boat,so the next day,an easy to find way ,we boarded a kind of local fisherman boat who took us to the flowers for only 50 baht a person, unforgettable .There were also lots of restaurants around the lake,it made me feel I was near the ocean.

  7. There is a lovely promenade to walk along and a fish farm where you can buy food to feed the fish. To can go on a punt boat to the small island that has a temple. There are lots of restaurants and we went to a lovely coffee shop in one of the side roads near the farm. They had a small supermarket/gift shop where I bought some packet mixes to take home to make curries etc. They were wonderful.

  8. Kwan Phayao is a large lake in a beautiful setting in the more Northern region if Thailand. There is a very nice promenade for walking along the lakeshore. The path is right up close to the shore. There are many nice cafes and coffee shops located here as well. Worth a visit and a nice bucolic option.

  9. Originated about 80 years ago due to the construction of a dam across Ing river (which turned the surrounding lowland region into a huge reservoir as we seen today), this is the biggest freshwater lake in northern Thailand. The lovely lake has still water with a beautiful mountainous background view and boasts an abundance of life including fish, birds, and aquatic plants floating on its surface. Although the lake is located at the center of Phayao city, it made me feel at peace. In the morning, we walked leisurely along the lakeshore and released some fish into the lake. Then, we travelled around (and on) the lake and visited many attractions. Finally, we were back again in the night to wander around a walking street (along the lakeshore) consisted of many stalls selling food, coconut ice cream, or souvenirs.

  10. The beach promenade has been successively refreshed, now with planters and more well-kept surfaces.Even the previously almost overgrown shore section of lake vegetation caused by eutrophication has been cleared.Plenty of simple eateries and bars along the promenade.Beautiful decorations with lanterns during the month of February
