I did the four hour intro to sailing course with Alf, and it was a ton of fun. Alf was super patient throughout, and was a pleasure to learn from. Highly recommend taking a lesson if you’re looking for something fun to do on the water.
Our family spent four days on the Freedom Fargo as a “live-aboard” in Feb 2017, hosted by skipper Alf, and his partner, Joy. Those four days were some of the best of our lives and one of the most indelible memories we’ll ever have as a family. We’re a family of five – including kids ages 12, 10, and 6 – and this was the perfect experience for us. We sailed from island to island, seeking out deserted beaches where we and our kids would play for hours. The kids built sandcastles, snorkeled, and played soccer on the beach. Our time on the boat was filled with peace, solitude, and utter beauty, not to mention gourmet meals prepared by the amazing Joy. (In the words of our six-year old daughter, “there’s a reason why they call her Joy!”) Our three very picky eaters all raved about Joy’s meals, and my husband and I enjoyed every one. We also spent a good amount of our time on the boat playing card games, reading, relaxing, and taking in the gorgeous scenery.Alf took thoughtful care to plan out each day and ensure our best experience, including deliberately timing all of our excursions to avoid tourists, and thus enabling us to feel as if we had the islands all to ourselves. He led us through a beautiful cave hike on one of the islands, as well as took us to snorkel through caves.Although the boat itself was older, it was well cared for, and the whole experience felt luxurious – we would have changed nothing. If we could, we’d return in a heartbeat. Huge thanks to Alf and Joy for the trip of a lifetime.
My partner and I did a 5 day live aboard competent crew course with Alf on Freedom Fargo. It was brilliant! Alf is an uber experienced and very knowledgeable skipper. He taught us so much over the 5 days, with a huge emphasis on practical experience. That means getting stuck in and learning as you go rather than sitting around and getting overwhelmed with theory. That’s not to say that the theory wasn’t covered, but having the practical experience meant when you did talk about it, you had some experience to relate it to. He was also very good at setting you little problems to solve that really made you think about what you were learning, rather than passively going through the motions. Overall this meant I feel I walked away with some tacit understanding of what sailing is about and the confidence to get stuck in (under the guidance of a knowledgeable skipper of course!)We covered all the aspects you’d want to cover on the course at an appropriate level. That included everything from hoisting the sails, terminology, right through to learning about navigation, navigation lighting for the vessel, and lots more. As it was a live aboard it also meant we got to learn other really important parts of the reality of living on a boat for a period of time, like cooking in the galley and managing things like water consumption. Outside of all the amazing learning we had. The actual sailing part was incredible too! Alf knows the area so well we saw some breathtaking scenery. So, I really recommend Alf and Island Cruises Sailing. If you’re after a sailing cruise, Alf knows exactly where to take you. But if you want to learn from him, he’s got so much to teach! Thanks Alf – awesome time 🙂
I sailed with Alf in March 2017 on the competent crew course. Alf’s style is relaxed and rather than make it a class room type experience the tuition was made on a rolling basis as we went through the cruise and the situations and subjects arose. That suited me just fine. Alf tailored the trip to the wants and desires of the course participants onboard. We preferred to buy food supplies before setting sail and cook onboard for the real cruise experience. The boat has seen some nautical miles but is “ship shape” and comfortable enough. I would be happy to sail with Alf again (just don’t let him put on tracks from the band he played in 25 years ago! Rock music from the country that made the Hofman a national hero is not good (sorry Alf had to put that in).
I had an amazing experience with afternoon cruise, the service was great. We went cliff jumping and visited a secluded beach. It was totally worth t!
Alf is a great teacher and my daughter is much more knowledgeable now than I was after an RYA course. He brings a wealth of experience to his teaching and this makes a huge difference. My daughter (age 11) had lots of fun and loved her time on the water and spends her evening doing knots while reading now! I would recommend this for adults too. Beautiful place to learn to sail, and Alf is really easy to learn from. (German – speaks absolutely fluent English).
We rented the boat for the whole day with 11 of us, including two 11-year olds and a 6 year old. Fantastic day out that was kept flexible. Alf was a great host and took us to 3 great dive sites. Lunch and food was excellent and we finished the day seeing the sun go down. Highly recommended if you want a day doing your own thing without being committed to a fixed itinerary.
What a fantastic day!Alf’s boats are really conveniently located in the centre of Sairee Beach. I went out with him in the Lazer from 9-3, with a lunch break. I sailed when I was younger, but a long gap since then, so I wasn’t sure how much I’d remember. We had a relaxed start. My six year old learned some knots and I got to quietly revise at the same time. We covered rigging the boat, and then headed out for two great sails. The wind was relatively light, but no bother as the Lazer is great in a light breeze, and my poor jibing technique didn’t cause us any problems. Lots learned and Alf is a great instructor, and good company. If we’d discovered this earlier in the week, we’d have gone back for another session in the Hobie Cat.
Brilliant day of sailing with Alf on the Hobie Cat. Alf’s tuition was super, and I really appreciated the time he took to find out what my level of sailing was, which meant the tuition was pitched on the areas that I wanted to improve.
My friend and I took the 5 day sailing course on the Laser boat with Alf. Alf is a very friendly guy with lots of interesting stories to tell and lots of experience. We learned to rig the boat ourselves, sail, capsizing and putting the boat back up ourselves in the water. It was great that after 2 days we could go sailing on our own, with Alf just watching from the beach! Highly recommended!!
