  1. en 1986, le ministre belge des Travaux publics Louis Olivier, en voyage officiel en Thaïlande, offre à la ville de Bangkok engorgée par les embouteillages ce pont métallique démontable. Le transport et le remontage du viaduc ont coûté 100 millions de francs belges (environ 2,5 millions d’euros) à la Belgique. En 1988, le “Thai-Belgium bridge”, symbole de l’amitié belgo-thaïlandaise, a été installé en 48 heures dans un endroit très fréquenté de la capitale.Des liens particuliers unissent la Belgique et la Thaïlande depuis la fin du XIXe. A l’époque, le roi du Siam, Chulalongkorn (Rama V), séjourne dans la cité balnéaire d’Ostende et visite la Belgique en 1897. A la demande de Rama V, Léopold II envoie plusieurs conseillers royaux au Siam, dont un éminent juriste, ancien ministre de l’Intérieur, le gantois Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns. Ce dernier participe à la modernisation du pays, menacé d’être colonisé, en réécrivant la Constitution thaïlandaise sur le modèle de la Constitution belge. Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns, proche conseiller du roi, séjournera de 1882 à 1901 au Siam. Le Belge reste à ce jour l’étranger qui a reçu la plus haute distinction honorifique de Thaïlande, avec le titre de “Chow Phya Abhai Raja”. Il a également été désigné, en 2011, l’Européen le plus influent des… 500 dernières années en Thaïlande.Les relations commerciales entre la Belgique et la Thaïlande remontent à 150 ans et la signature par les deux royaumes, en 1868, d’un traité d’amitié et de commerce. L’année 2013 marque également le 130e anniversaire des relations diplomatiques entre les deux pays.Au XXe siècle, le futur roi Baudouin fréquentera la même école, en Suisse, que le roi Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).
